Has anyone ever been rescued?

I know this is super weird and probably, one of those things that is not at all nice IRL.

But. I have never been in a position where I have had to be rescued. Partially because I am boring, sensible, and generally the one in charge - but also, sheer dumb luck.

I am really curious to know what it feels like though. Emergency services, mountain rescue, random man in the street....

Have you ever been rescued and what was it like?

Sort of. Ambulance boat had to get me from a remote island - which didn’t have a hospital - about 20 hours flight from the UK. But only because I am the unluckiest person ever and my appendix decided to burst just after I got there 😂 As you can see I lived to tell the tale.

I also worked in a ski resort and SO MANY idiots had to get ski patrol to get them off the mountain. Usually due to overestimating their skill, underestimating the weather or over partaking in alcohol.

I've not really been rescued but I was a fire marshal and we did a fake fire. There were makeup artists who produced some really realistic injuries.

The fir brigade got a 5 min warning, just in case there was a real fire and we had to try to do things to stop them rescuing us, like going back in to a room and leaving doors open.

We were supposed to use a particular exit route but the fire fighters just brought a platform raised to a second floor window and took us out that way.

My aunt, as a nursing student, went to Blackpool with other student nurses and I don't know exactly what happened but she was rescued by a life guard, Shirley Crabtree who became better known as 'Big Daddy'.

My car was hit by a HGV lorry at 60 mph on a dual carriageway and I had to be cut out of my car afterwards by fireman.
I had my eyes closed the entire time as I was In too much pain to open them from the airbag breaking my nose.
Everybody was amazing to me that night, other drivers who held my hand and called the ambulance and Police, somebody got my phone from my bag and rang my partner. The paramedics, Police and doctors all said it was a miracle I was alive.

There is part of me that does wish I’d opened my eyes long enough to see fireman with their equipment cutting my car to pieces to save me 😉

TheNinkyNonkyIsATardis · 03/07/2026 09:07

I can't say the exact circumstances because they're outing - really, the place I was rescued from was bloody weird!

But I was a few miles from home, out on a hike in the freezing cold. Luckily some hikers were passing and were able to stay with me whilst my parents went back to the house for hot water bottles, drinks etc.

They built a windbreak around me and chatted and let me eat all their chocolate. I was stuck there for three hours in minus 6 temps. The fire brigade got stuck trying to get to me, and I was rescued by our neighbour on a quad bike.

BagaChips · 03/07/2026 09:49

Yes, only once but I will never forget it. I was in a car crash a few years ago, my car landed on its side in a water filled ditch and I ended up being stuck in it hanging from my seatbelt. Took the fire service about 3 hours to cut the entire top and side of my car off to be able to get me out. The paramedics were amazing too, one of them crawled through the boot to the front to treat me

I will forever be grateful to them, what they do is amazing.

Pokingbroccoli · 02/07/2026 21:00

What happened?

At that time thy said that 10% of people don't make it. The service is made up of volunteers

Poonu · 03/07/2026 09:51

Mountain rescue. We were number 96 and number 97 that year. Amazing service.

When I was a child. I was trapped in the rear seat of a car with a tree branch through the side window (the car had come off the road due to, what my parents were later told, a faulty steering wheel). The fire brigade had to cut the branch away before I could be rescued from the car. I'm lucky to be alive but every time I look in the mirror I'm reminded of that day.

TirednessOnToast · 03/07/2026 11:07

@JohnnyMcGrathSaysFuckOff I was able to open an old fashioned sash and case window & climb out onto the ledge (slim / flexible age 21) I can't remember if the receiving 'cage' on the cherry picker had a door in it or if the firefighter hoicked me into it? I do remember being both very grateful & rather delighted to swoon into his arms though (& may have thought about it since!) 😂

Not a proper rescue but when I was a child we were walking up a fell in Lapland and me and my brother wandered off ahead out of sight about half way up but our family must have thought we were somewhere behind them because they turned around and went back down and looked for us while we happily went to the top and waited, and waited and started to wonder why no one else had got to the top yet. Someone else was walking that day with a dog and the lovely lovely dog found us. But really we could have just walked back down by ourselves but we were expecting everyone else to meet us at the top.

Had a fake rescue once. Was doing a lifesaving training day (no idea why just saw it advertised and decided to sign up) and we did various training then at the end had a lifesaving rehearsal. I was chosen to be one of the victims, dressed in a floatation suit and floated in the lake for ages waiting to be rescued, which I was and it was very fun but the water was really cold and I was the last to be rescued and was frozen. Had to wrapped in blankets and sat next to a fire to warm up!

Kind of but not really. My dad took us on a “nice after dinner stroll” through the woods when we were on a camping holiday at 6pm. It was me and my five siblings and the goal was to give my mum some peace. We were walking for a while… I was 6 and I was really tired, getting scared because my brother told me there was wild dogs in the woods and that their favourite food was “specky little girls”. Apparently all they find is pairs of glasses covered in blood and little hair bows. At 1AM we were found by some ranger type blokes from the camp site who my mum had sent after us. She was beside herself by 7:30pm. It was genuinely the most scared I’ve ever been. She was fuming at my dad when we got back, like screaming and going for him, my oldest brother had to hold her back and tell her it was alright. She made dad sleep outside and wouldn’t let him in the caravan.

Next day he cooked us a massive breakfast and had driven over an hour to find a florist and a jewellers. He got my mum the biggest bunch of flowers I’ve ever seen and some beautiful earrings. We all got to go out everyday for the rest of the holiday and it was genuinely amazing. We never normally got to do things like aquariums or theme parks because we had no money but my dad definitely had deep pockets for the rest of the week. At the campsite you had to pay for the indoor pool but outdoor was free, I got to go in the indoor one TWO times in 4 days! They’re divorced now and on good terms, but my mum periodically brings up the time my dad “almost killed all her children”.

I don’t understand what happened between 6 pm and 1 am, though — did you all get lost? How? How big was this wood?

It was in France, we were literally walking around (probably in circles??) for fucking hours on end. We got back at 1am so we were probably walking for a solid 5-6 hours, there was a somewhat long drive back I think.

This was also when my dad used to drink, I don’t remember him being drunk but he definitely could have been. I’m guessing he was a bit because of how angry my mum was and I don’t think he drank for the rest of the holiday which suggests he was.

I did a walk solo in Lapland, and the only other walkers out biked up ahead of me, and passed me on the way back too.

There were some very big "dog" prints around, and it was getting dark as I went back down (2pm), and I kept falling over.

The third time I fell I thought, "Oh, so this is how I die. Eaten by wolves in a frozen forest." 😂

Hah what a way to go! Not great phone signal in Lapland either to call for help (we got lost once driving home and got a bit panicky as wouldn't be able to call for help and GPS obviously didn't work but luckily saw someone drive past and asked for directions)
I've had relatives berry picking in Lapland where there's been signs of bears and the dog acting up - that would worry me a lot!

Mountain rescue in Snowdonia. We’d been following a route and to this day don’t understand how we lost the path and got stuck, as we weren’t inexperienced. They had to find us in the dark. Amazing team.

Megsdaughter · 03/07/2026 13:45

On a stoney beach in Spain. Went into the sea tgere was a sudden drop iff only about 6 feet from the shore, swam out ( i was quite a strong swimmer) suddenly there were big waves turned round to go back just touched the drop off when the waves knocked me back under. I couldnt get back to the beach although I could touch the floor. The waves just kept knocking me under thought I was going to drown. My 10 year old DGD realised as she was stood on the shore and grabbed me by the arm and dragged me up. How she did it I dont know as I was a hefty 13 stone and she was no more than 6 stone.

DH was lying sunbathing not two feet away the whole time.

SabrinaThwaite · 03/07/2026 15:18

My DH rescued a surfer on our wedding day. The surfer had been dumped by a big wave and then clattered on the head with his board and was concussed. DH had just done a lifesaving courses and was keen to leap into action, and dragged the guy (and his board) out. Surfer refused any medical treatment and we later saw him wobbling off on his bike with his board.

Blackcatahotcat · 03/07/2026 15:21

Yes. Had to ask a bloke to reverse my car out of a space as I’d parked at an awkward angle and couldn’t see a way to get out without taking the paint off the car next to me.

Keepingittogetherstepbystep · 03/07/2026 16:31

No as I'm incredibly boring.

I did however on miss the last stop on a tube train in European capital city. People i the platform weee trying to tell me but I didnt undertsand. It was a bit scary when the train stopped in a tunnel and a guy started walking past the train. There were some very bemused looks when the train pulled back into the station.

2catsandhappy · 03/07/2026 17:15

I lived in a downstairs flat. Communal hall with one house entrance and two flat doors at the end of the hall.
I reached from my flat door to get some post, overstretched and my flat door shut with a deadly clunk.
I was wearing a robe and slippers. Nothing else.
Hours later, the kind upstairs neighbour tried ringing the flat agency who refused to assist. He then climbed in my downstairs, outside window and opened up from inside. I could have kissed him!
Taught me a valuable lesson to this day.

@MaggieBsBoat so sorry this happened to you. There are no words. What an amazingly strong woman you are, that you made it through this. And what a wonderful man this young PC was. Sometimes the universe puts just the right people in front of us at the shittiest of times. 💐for you.

Made me proper tear up, that one. 🥲

What did they do? Guide you back down? You must have been frozen!

I am so pleased I started this thread and THANK YOU to everyone for your stories! It has it all, drama, action, swooning into the arms of firefighters 😍

I am now sorry I am so resolutely sensible and in charge.
