Has anyone ever been rescued?

I know this is super weird and probably, one of those things that is not at all nice IRL.

But. I have never been in a position where I have had to be rescued. Partially because I am boring, sensible, and generally the one in charge - but also, sheer dumb luck.

I am really curious to know what it feels like though. Emergency services, mountain rescue, random man in the street....

Have you ever been rescued and what was it like?

Yes as a child in the sea with my younger sister and two friends. We were suddenly swept out of our depth and couldn’t get back. I was trying to instruct my sister on floating and trying not to panic her when a man doing a long, proper sea swim grabbed me in a lifeguard hold and swam me back to shore. I was FURIOUS! Screaming and fighting at him the whole way that he’d left my small sister and I was taller and to drop me and get her. I bit him on the forearm and everything. So ungrateful and embarrassing! He just ignored me, dumped me very unceremoniously on the sand, didn’t even look at me and went straight back in for her. Luckily by then our parents and friends had got the other three so he just went back to his swim. I cringe when I think about it. I wish he knew I was actually grateful. Just not doing a good job of not panicking 😬

I took part in a military training exercise as a civilian role player and was quite literally rescued from a hostage situation by the SAS. I was bruised all over having been thrown in a human chain to get me clear of the terrorists . Quite an experience!

As a 13 year old walking through a market in Turkey with a friend we were rescued by a stall holder from a predatory man who wouldn't leave us alone. The stall holder told him where to go in no uncertain terms although we couldn't understand exactly what he said then he got his older teenage daughter and son to walk us back to our hotel.

Rescued by a lovely lifeguard at a inflatable water park after falling off and then being landed on by a very large man who then panicked and was basically kicking me in the face as he tried to save himself.

Couldn't get up a icy hill in winter one year, kind man with a land rover had to give me a gentle push

I haven’t had to be rescued (yet) but I did once have to organise the evacuation of someone taken ill on top of a very tall tower accessed only by a narrow circular staircase.

Fortunately the fire service has specialist teams trained in rescues in unusual situations, so I was immensely relieved when they turned up and got the casualty down to the ambulance.

They were quite excited about the whole thing, and I ended up giving them a guided tour of the place before they went home.

When my friend was an au pair in Paris she was in the lift of the family’s apartment building with the little girl she was caring for when it broke down. She said the firemen who came to help were the handsomest men she had ever encountered and she was hoping and praying it would happen again.

IdentifyingAsAWoollyMammoth · 02/07/2026 20:14

If being cut out of a car after a lorry crashed into it counts, then yes.

I had this experience just yesterday. One of the firefighter's was drop dead gorgeous 😍

I once passed out as a student nurse in an operating theatre. I woke up in the staff room so someone clearly rescued me!

A couple of times but there was one standout. I was in my early twenties, working in hospitality and there was a fire at my place of work, in the middle of the night, during a really busy period. I managed the evacuation just fine, all guests and staff were safe but I had a major wobble when the fire brigade arrived. I fell apart when it finally didn’t feel like only my responsibility. The fire was under control very quickly, no one was hurt and no major damage. The trouble was that the guests were still approaching me with all their questions, completely understandable. My prince fireman intervened, told the guests I needed oxygen, helped me up to the seat in the fire engine and handed me a an oxygen mask, all with a smile and trying to comfort me. I can’t even remember what he really looked like, everything is a blur but he basically kept me there until the general manager arrived and I felt so rescued and looked after.

That is a lovely one!

I've been rescued twice. The first time was a few years ago. I was kicked by a horse (broken ribs and shattered arm). I ended up in a ditch and was found unconscious by a local farmer. I was air lifted to hospital.

The second time was yesterday. Got stuck in my lift with my dog (who kept farting). Had to ring the fire brigade to rescue me. On the plus side, one of the fire fighters was absolutely drop dead gorgeous 😍

🤣🤣 i bet the gorgeous fireman thought the smell was from you farting 🤣🤣

Capsized raft whilst white water rafting. Got into difficulty and we were all thrown out of it. I hit my head on a rock and was knocked out briefly. Was pulled out of the river further downstream when somebody spotted me. Saved my life I think.

Me too. Pulled out by a kayaker.

Thanks mate!

I wasn’t in any danger, but a lovely policeman helped change my tyre once. I say helped, what I mean is he did the whole thing while letting my DD sit in the front of his police car.

I got rescued by the lifeboat in around 1987 when I told my non swimming grandad I knew how to ride a canoe and knew what I was doing (I was 7). I pointed myself straight out to sea despite all the other kids staying in the confines of a safety rope. My grandad grew smaller and smaller as I canoed off further and further out. Obvs there was no mobile phones in the day and the next thing I knew as the waves got a tad chopier and I could no longer see land the lifeboat arrived I was taken back and given the biggest telling off of my life.

Gosh that was on your grandad not you!!!!

That's exciting! How did you get recruited for that? And what do you mean by thrown in a human chain?

Two, but one of them twice!

You may laugh, but it's a bloody tiny lift...and it was a bloody big dog 🐕. Very lucky the whole building didn't blow up 🤣

From the sea. By the lifeguard. Super grateful. But mortified

MaggieBsBoat · 02/07/2026 20:27

I’ve been saved a few times. But this one stands out. I was being choked by my ex DH and luck had it that the phone was near my hand on the floor by the bed he had me on. I dialled 999. I don’t know why, they must’ve heard something - my ex saying he was going to kill me etc etc but quickly after (I heard later that because we lived in a problem area of town the police sit in a lay-by near my then flat) they forced the door open and two officers came in.
It all feels unreal now. But one officer who was a probationer stayed with me for a couple of hours. He had to smoke, he said he wasn’t allowed but please could I not tell anyone. He told me he’d seen this happen to his own mum. It was why he became a PC as he was shaking he looked me in the eye, held my gaze and said that I would die if I stayed that I had to go. Please please choose life. He was nearly crying. My ex was bound over until the Monday -as he was arrested late Friday night. This gave me the weekend to pack and get out of there. Anywhere.

That young PC saved my life. Thank you wherever you are now.
