Will benefit claimants get reduced price tickets to see the Bayeux Tapestry ?

If you like embroidery and WW2 history, there’s an amazing and enormously long embroidered account of the DD landings that was undertaken by the Royal College of Needlework some years ago that’s currently on display in Portsmouth at the DDay Landings Museum.

I thought it was fantastic!

Not expensive and no queuing.

Octavia64 · 02/07/2026 19:20

My mum was desperate to see it.

she has a city and guilds in embroidery and has taught sewing/patchwork and quilting for going on thirty years.

She loves going to anywhere there are old embroideries.

we’re going with her because she’s 80.

That's also well worth visiting.

Many museums/galleries with paid entry offer discounts to those on benefits- it's usually very easy to find out on the relevant website.

SwedishEdith · 02/07/2026 19:37

I saw it in France as well as an ungrateful teen. Colin Welland was there dragging his ungrateful children around at the same time. I think I've seen it again as an adult 🤔. It is impressive though. It dawned on me the other day how unlikely I am to see the 1,000 year anniversary so would have been good to see it here in the UK.

ShanghaiDiva · 02/07/2026 20:23

I saw it last year in Bayeux, shortly before it was being prepared for transfer to the UK. Absolutely amazing!

BeardySchnauzer · 02/07/2026 20:36

We used to visit family in Normandy when I was a kid so I have seen it many times and will be going with my parents to see it in London!

I used to love finding little things I hadn’t noticed before

the DDAY one on Portsmouth is really interesting

Cornelia Parker’s embroidered Wikipedia page on Magna Carts was not interesting

I was in the queue for hours without ever getting to be able to book, and now that tranche of tickets is sold out. Frustrating.

bestbefore · 02/07/2026 20:43

Wow I feel v lucky to have gotten ours yesterday. Kept a page open pretty much of the day and when I got in there seemed to be loads left! I had a choice of days. Looking forward to it

Yeah, I was at work all day, couldn't log on until the evening.

For what it’s worth membership of the British museum is only a bit more than the entrance fees and gets you booking two weeks before it opens for the public.

THanks for the tip. Hadn't occurred to me, as much as I love the BM, I currently live up north, so difficult to pop by.

ExpatForLife · 02/07/2026 22:13

I got tickets yesterday after waiting in queue for 2.5 hours. Taylor Swift tickets were easier!

summerebels · 02/07/2026 22:16

In the 90’s we were on holiday nearby in France with toddlers, just want to add that it was the quickest visit ever!🥴

LilyLemonade · 02/07/2026 22:29

I saw it not long ago in Bayeux (nice and quiet, queue of about 10-20 people, no need to advance book) and I found it incredibly (and surprisingly) fascinating. It's really quite an amazing piece of textile art and history. Definitely worth going to see.

Nofeckingway · 02/07/2026 22:37

I decided to try and see if any tickets available for further in the year but they are not released yet . But if I wanted to , I could have waited in the queue where there were 52000+ people ahead . Sounds bad but if 1000 at least per day visit that could be just over a month's worth .
I wonder how many tickets have to be sold to recover costs ..

Doubt it. Discounts are reserved for those with war service if any.

They'd have to be bloody old to have served in that one.

KimonoQueen · 02/07/2026 22:48

I had planned to see it earlier this year on a trip to France - but then found out it was over here lol.

Joined the q at 10:05 with 40000 ahead of me...finally got my tix for the day I wanted at 15:45.

Thanks @KrazyKatty

That sounds really interesting too.

I saw the Bayeux Tapestry in Bayeux about 20 years ago.

I was very impressed. To the poster who asked I think it IS a joint cultural reference point, yes. Because we all heard of it in school, if you get the chance to then see it in real life, you feel you should. As others have said it is of cultural and historic significance so is understandable why people want to see it.

Interestingly, I remember thinking how much small it was than I expected it to be, when we saw it.

There are so many historic tapestries that are so much larger, although more decorative than telling a whole story.

Ticket scrum was very civilized , they email you when it's your turn in the queue. I logged on at exactly 10 and there were 5 thousand people in front of me, managed to get tickets at 2pm.

Bizarre. I logged in at exactly 10am, there were 12,000 people in front of me and I managed to get tickets at about 12pm.

GustyGertie · 02/07/2026 23:33

The British Museum are also doing Bayeux Around Britain - for those who can’t get to London to see it https://www.britishmuseum.org/about-us/press/press-releases/museum-launches-bayeux-around-britain-programme-activity

blizymitzy · 02/07/2026 23:40

I joined the queue at just before 10am and had 16800 people in front of me and got out tickets at 12.58 so I was pleased with that !

SurleyTurnip · 02/07/2026 23:49

I’ve seen it, I thought it looked like a manky tea towel. I was only 12 though so maybe too young to appreciate it.

blackheartsgirl · 03/07/2026 00:04

I’m so glad I’ve seen it, in its previous home, about 35 years ago. Still got the metal key ring I bought in the gift shop.

i remember my mum being seriously underwhelmed and saying is that it? She expected this massive great bloody wall hanging instead of this glass covered long thing 😂.

I was only about 13 at the time, I think I’d probably appreciate it a bit more now but I’m highly unlikely to see it again

This made me laugh, 13 year old me couldn’t understand what the fuss was about when I saw it, my mum agreed 😂
