Anyone else finding Netflix full of grim, repetitive programmes?

Virtually everything on Netflix is about crime, death, fighting, kidnap, torture, drugs, rape, war and weird shit about aliens 🙄

Boring......

Yes, I've watched Downton Abbey and something about Marie Antoinette.

I've even watched a German series about a house robot that kidnaps a family and tries to kill them.

I don't like comedy. I don't like romance. I don't like fluffy wildlife documentaries that start off nicely then end with little fluffy animal being ripped apart by a predator or choking to death on a plastic bag or being squashed by a JCB.

Netflix n shite.

I enjoyed Anne with an e.

We have different tastes but I agree with you. Most streamers are full of things I don't enjoy or have interest in. I pick up subscriptions for a month here and there when there's something (or things) in particular I want to watch.

But you know, it was like this with sky etc before streamers came along. The big difference now is that they churn out rubbish with shitloads of exposition so that people don't have to put down their phones.

The good stuff makes you want to put down your phone.

I've been watching Victoria, but she's getting on my nerves along with Albert's whispering.

Some of the documentaries are odd as well. They start off with absolutely no background given and clips of interviews and people speaking with no context or anything. This goes on seemingly forever then it continues, assuming the viewer knows the subject, the background, what happens, who's involved and how it ends. It's all very mysterious and 'if you know, you know' kind of vibe. Very dramatic, but with little actual content.

What's it about?

It's based on Anne of Green Gables.

Boreded · 26/06/2026 22:01

Alice in Borderland

FruityFrog · 26/06/2026 22:26

I came here to say I've restarted Anne with an E. It's brilliant.

smallglassbottle · 26/06/2026 22:27

I shall try Anne with an e, thanks for recommending 😀

I love all the scammer shows. Sweet Bobby was peak but they’re all good.

EmeraldRoulette · 26/06/2026 22:46

Netflix is absolutely terrible at showing you things you might be interested in

on my list at the moment, I've got House of Guiness, Cable Girls - I like period drama - they have loads if you like that they just don't like to advertise it! The version of Upstairs Downstairs with Keeley Hawes, Cranford, Foyle's War. Enola Holmes 3 is coming. I really enjoyed The Diplomat.

TimeDoesntStandStill · 26/06/2026 22:52

Yanbu and im thinking of cancelling ours as there hasnt been any good shows for a while now it seems like. Plenty of new grim atuff as you say.

Things weve liked that mayxfit your criteria...

Lincoln lawyer
The gentlemen
At home with the furys
The queens gambit

Ive mostly kept it on for the kids profile but even that there hanst been any new and decent shows, they seem to have a lot of youtubers having their own shows now which I think is a lot of rubbish. They used to be good doing book adaptions for both adults and kids but ive not seen any decemt ones for a while.

When im on my own i like romance but even that has been few and far between this past 6 months to a year. There are a few good comedies but nothing in comparison to the amount of grim crime/murder shows.

Tutorpuzzle · 27/06/2026 06:51

Agree that ‘The Diplomat’ is very good escapism. Also ‘America’s Sweethearts’ is bizarrely addictive. I can’t work out if they’re strong, independent women, blah, blah, blah, or have simply been indoctrinated into a cult!

But yes, it’s really hard to find something that isn’t death, destruction, or misery.

Wishesandhorses · 27/06/2026 07:02

Yes really! It's the same on iPlayer and ITVX though. It's as if there's nothing to write dramas about except torture and murder.

I do enjoy that at this point there are more tv detectives than there probably are real ones, we're knee deep in them. Almost all said detectives are chronically depressed/in awful situations personally, and the same actors keep popping up as the background team members, so the impression is that there's a ton of lead detectives in the UK but the actual leg work is done by a small group they have to share.

Thank goodness for Bridgerton.

TheThirteenthFairy · 27/06/2026 08:23

And the totally unnecessary sex. 'Gratuitous' is far too tiny a word for some of it. I settled down to watch a programme about Alexander the Great. 'They had no word for homosexuality' - so let's have two blokes snogging in a river. Alexander forged a treaty with some bint - yes! There they are having a knee trembler. I stopped watching.

ZenNudist · 27/06/2026 08:33

I think you need to try the 80s and 90s for completely gratuitous sex in film and drama. It's much less ubiquitous now.

Ive noticed an explosion of crime documentaries. Must be cheap to make. I watched one and now I can't get away from them. They are utter crap though I have been aghast at that one with the girl who drove her boyfriend into a wall.

HonestLilacWriter · 27/06/2026 08:37

There are tonnes of other genres on there. Search by them.

MajorSamanthaCarter · 27/06/2026 08:46

Watch some Korean romance, generally very sweet and innocent with ludicrously beautiful people. I highly recommend Lovely Runner, Queen of Tears or Twenty Five, Twenty One to start you off.

Just clocked that you don't like romance so ignore me 😂

crowstreet · 27/06/2026 09:12

‘When life gives you tangerines’ is a very good Korean series about generations of women living on Jeju.

alice in borderland, mentioned above, is basically about people trying not to get killed, and being killed in gruesome ways. Not so great if someone tries to avoid grim content.

cheezncrackers · 27/06/2026 09:19

I find Netflix really frustrating because it only shows you things that are exactly like stuff you've watched and liked before. So if you watch one true crime show, for example, your whole home page (or whatever it's called) is FULL of true crime and nothing else.

I like to watch a variety of things - I don't want to watch exactly the same thing all the time - but I never get to see the full range of what they have and I CBA to trawl the internet for ages finding recommendations for other kinds of shows. The best thing I've seen on Netflix recently was Legends, which was BRILLIANT, but I know brilliant stuff is hard to find.

LittleBearPad · 27/06/2026 09:21

What do you like?

Sherararara · 27/06/2026 09:23

So as all the pp have listed, there is in fact a huge wide range of other genres on Netflix and OP is talking tripe. Learn to search better OP.

Do you work for Netflix or something? What a weird and aggressive response.

Cuppachuchu · 27/06/2026 09:26

About the only thing I'm currently watching on Netflix is Everwood. A sort of US family soap, drama and some humour. Not everyone's cup of tea. It's "comfort tv" for me.
I stopped watching the crime docs a while ago. Giving me nightmares. 🙀

suburberphobe · 27/06/2026 09:27

I really enjoyed The Diplomat.

I'm enjoying it too but it just seems to go on for ever....

Also trying to find out which stately home it features. No luck on Wikipedia....

It was hardly aggressive. Your response, however...
