Why don’t we just all get ac?

Honestly, it’s what the rest of the world does…

I have in 2 rooms. Doubles up as a heater in winter. Not everyone can afford it maybe?

likimagee · Yesterday 23:10

Well it cost £1300 for just my bedroom, I’m not swimming in cash to do my whole house and I’m sure a lot of people would struggle to do even just the one room.

I do think governments are going to have to start funding AC for schools though, our school is having to shut partially this week which isn’t good enough really, it’s not going to get any cooler.

youalright · Yesterday 23:11

Ive been looking but its so expensive but I think im going to start saving and hopefully by the next year or the year after we will at least be able to get it in the bedrooms

Dreamerinme · Yesterday 23:12

Cost.

However, like pp said, schools need government funding for AC to be installed. These intense heatwaves are only going to get more frequent and intense.

BreakingBroken · Yesterday 23:14

It also pulls more power from the grid. I’m not sure the UK is set up for everyone to double power usage.

Jellycatspyjamas · Yesterday 23:16

Because we don’t all need it.

Natsku · Yesterday 23:16

We have it in lounge (air pump), it is lovely. Don't have it upstairs though, window stays open all summer which helps somewhat but when its proper hot it doesn't cool down at night.
Our basement is naturally cool though, down in the rock layer of the ground, so always good to go cool down in there.

Currently in my parents house though, which has no cooling. I don't expect I'll sleep much tonight. Might take a sleeping pill in the hope it helps.

TheGriffle · Yesterday 23:20

Because I can’t afford the minimum of £1200 to fit it in one room let alone each room it would actually be needed in (we’d need it in 5 rooms). Is that hard to understand?

In other places, again it’s the money. Schools do not have a budget for it, nor do care homes, hospitals, the places that really need it and the government aren’t going to fork out the millions it would need.

BabblingBiddy · Yesterday 23:20

I can't afford it. And I couldn't afford to run it if I had it.

If you're offering to buy it and pay for my electricity then I won't say no.

ToKittyornottoKitty · Yesterday 23:25

Because I can’t afford it, pretty simple really. I imagine over the next 5-10 years it will become cheaper and il save up and have it eventually

CraftyNavySeal · Yesterday 23:25

Because we don’t all need it.

Given that we are a wet country and we have massive damp issues AC should really be used for heating and cooling everywhere because it also dehumidifies.

Since AC uses electricity it can be powered by renewables so better for the environment. The in-laws live in Portugal and their solar panels power their AC.

The real issue is that through daft government policy we have among the most expensive electricity in the world so we’re all stuck with polluting gas boilers and no AC instead.

OutOfApricots · Yesterday 23:31

Air conditioning units run on large quantities of electricity, and the increased usage will contribute to climate change and make things worse.

MrsDoylesLastTeabag · Yesterday 23:38

My house has AC throughout because it’s a modernist, Grand Designs-type property with whole walls that are made of glass. It would have been impossible for me to live in it without aircon throughout. It cost almost £10,000 to install, but it was the best £10,000 I’ve ever spent. It’s surprisingly inexpensive to run it as a cooling system in the summer and for heating in the winter. But I can’t see how it would work to retrofit it in, say, a Victorian terrace. You need the space outside to fit a large condensing unit.

HelenaWilson · Yesterday 23:41

For a couple of weeks in the year? And not everywhere in the country is even having a heatwave this week.

raisinglittlepeople12 · Yesterday 23:44

I think we don’t need it often enough for most people to be able to afford the investment.

Negroany · Yesterday 23:45

Unlike others, I could afford it, and would consider solar panels to run it. But I had a survey last year and it's not possible on my house. Not enough external wall space.

Not sure it's worth the cost of moving house either.

XenoBitch · Yesterday 23:46

Why don't they eat cake.

100% this.

GardenCovent · Yesterday 23:48

Because I live in a 130 year old stone house in Scotland with no insulation.

MeetMeOnTheCorner · Yesterday 23:52

We have solar panels, air source heat pump and batteries but - you need internal and an external unit. It’s not just a case of plugging it in and off you go. British gas has a good description of how it works. The only form of “heating” that produces cold air is “warm air” central heating via ducts - therefore no radiators. The source of the energy is besides the point. We do have high energy costs and governments have failed to invest. Electric cars will also drain the national grid.

APurpleSquirrel · Yesterday 23:53

We had solar panels fitted last year, so we’d definitely consider it having ac as the electricity generated by the solar could power it but it’s the cost that’s the biggest issue. We’re still paying off the solar atm.

Anyahyacinth · Yesterday 23:57

Because it will accelerate climate change ..acid seas etc etc.. we have to begin to manage the harms down not up

soddingspiderseason · Today 00:00

Because this is Britain. It will be pouring with rain, 15 degrees and howling winds next week.

Bourneyesterday · Today 00:04

Because it is very bad for the environment

NoCommentingFromNowOn · Today 00:05

Only a few days ago most people were loving the hot weather. The amount of days that it tips from lovely to not lovely is really minimal. Simply not worth it.
