Honestly, it’s what the rest of the world does…

Ive been told off so many times on other threads because I said I have AC.

I have NO regrets getting it.
There some good fans out their aswell and portable AC units.

I got my AC in winter when know one was really interested in buying one.

I made a plan that I was not going to suffer like I did in the last heat wave, saved got one put in, saved again had another.

Its down to people choice.
We go on holiday and have AC so whats the difference having it at home.

Yes I should probably look at ceiling fans but the issue we have being in a new build is that as many people know our ceilings aren’t very high so I worry how practical they are in terms of safety!

The building regs have been updated in recent years to include the new part O to prevent overheating. House builders have to evidence that new buildings can pass a calculation to prevent overheating with openable windows alone or they have to provide additional ventilation. The house’s orientation and size of bedrooms is taken into account. There’s a night time and a daytime calc. The legislation isn’t perfect but it’s a start and the new builds going up now will have more openable windows than a few years ago.

Simple answer? Costs

cost of installation

cost of running it

cost of servicing it.

Maybe it was the kind you had or it’s a bit dated now and not very efficient. I’ve been pleasantly surprised how cheap it is to both cool and heat. Even with the portable units on full blast it’s not doing much to our bills. I have switched off the heating to our room now (it’s on a separate system to the rest of house) so in winter we use the heater element. It’s partially why VAT isn’t charged on it as it’s considered ‘eco’ because it’s more efficient than other methods of heating.

It was brand new when fitted and had a good energy rating, well, as good as central aircon can have.

Those £200 units don’t work very well, do they?

Mine works fine actually! Living room is lovely and cool.

It’s not £2.50 a day when it’s over £1,000 to install. Where I live I’d have to get permission for the external unit, that’s another £500 gone.

If we ever do an extension I’d probably have it in there for hearing and cooling. But I’d have to pay for new heating in there anyway.

The thing that would really help is more affordable solar programs. A/C with solar panels would be really beneficial.

That’s true but it’s a different point from the climate one.

Hardly. Most of the world doesn't actually have A/C.

That’s good, our house has been brilliantly designed for the winter, but it frankly isn’t habitable in weather like this. Well not the upstairs, the downstairs isn’t too bad actually, the bedrooms get hotter than the sun.

Tigerbalmshark · Today 09:56

The north is definitely hot. I’m in the northwest and it was 33 degrees today.

Also, the South wasn’t this hot 10 years ago! So the likelihood is that the bits of the north which are currently not hot will be affected soon enough. Might as well have something in place already, so those guys can avoid what we are currently suffering under.

HumberSquid · Today 09:57

Because there are cheaper ways to cool my house so I use those instead. AC is expensive to install and expensive to run.

Yes ok. Please let me know what time the installation will be and thank you very much for paying in full for it.
mad statement altogether.

catslovehairties · Today 10:46

Because it’s expensive and not worth the expenditure when it’s only needed for maybe one or two days out of the year where I live.

You offering to pay OP? For something that will probably never get a month's use out of every 12?

I'll think I'll just sweat.

omghereistrouble · Today 11:40

nice idea but we certainly could not afford it nor the Housin Association. maybe it will be in new builds but probably more upmarket more expensive abodes

furimosa · Today 11:47

it’s sold out

There’s such thing as portable ac units. No ones saying you need it installed
