Colleagues ignored WFH advice now stranded in heatwave - karma.

I work in a big office in central London. Everyone lives in lots of different places obviously, but almost everyone is a significant train/ tube ride away.

Due to the heatwave our work told us to WFH where possible. But my most senior manager loves a bit of presenteeism. Hence a number of people (ie all the suck arses) came in. And, then proceeded to post/ message incessantly on internal comms demonstrating that they were in the office. Highly tiresome presenteeism considering ALL our calls were moved to Teams on our clients’ insistence.

Fast forward a few hours and ALL the tubes are fucked. As are almost all the trains. No-one can get home and they’re panicking at facing down 2-3hr bus journeys in 39 degree heat.

Serves them right for travelling against the advice of the health agency, government, TFL and the company. There was a do not travel unless essential instruction.

Of course, senior boss is alright. He got a company cab home…

the tubes are absolutely fucked two people ended up having to lime into the office. And. That’s because they HAD to be in.

onetrickrockingpony · 24/06/2026 20:33

This is a really horrible post. I went into office for the air con. I had an absolutely fine journey home on the jubilee line and a train from London Bridge. Seat both times, and the train had air con.

You’re being spiteful. People come into the office for all sorts of reasons, you don’t really know what home life is like for them.

I’m a manager and encouraged my team to wfh but would help them out should they become stuck. I wouldn’t be feeling gleeful

Yep! My manager would be concerned about me and my colleagues being stuck and seeing if there was anything he could do to help.

There’s no way he would be laughing at this situation and he definitely wouldn’t be calling it karma or starting a bitchy thread about it.

I’m so glad I have a decent manager.

Yes, I don't know any 'Senior Director' (as the OP claims she is) who would be doing this either.

I think you've touched a nerve with all the people who circumstantially wanted to come into the office (which has nothing to do with sucking up), along with annoying all the actual suck ups. 😄

Are you that narrow minded or narcissistic that you think people only choose to go into the office to be a suck up or to make OP look bad?

Vodka1 · 24/06/2026 20:36

Ew, nasty people are so gross.

I feel you've put alot of effort into enjoying their suffering, and that is so weird to me.

Hope the delays don't bother them too much in this heat. It's pretty brutal out there. And I'm sure they had a good day regardless if they felt the need to post pictures it'll be a novelty and a good chance to get to know each other a bit better in a smaller environment.

Did you get a bit of FOMO on the ice pops, perhaps?

MissAmbrosia · 24/06/2026 20:42

I had to travel today (for different reasons) and was well stressed about all the do not travel warnings and constant mails that my trip might be disrupted. In the end it went fine, I think I was luckily early. It's just mean to mock people who made a decision that you know nothing about.

Holdonforsummer · 24/06/2026 20:43

You sound like the kind of person who enjoys watching other people muck up. Not cool.

PrincessofWills · 24/06/2026 20:45

I travelled today because I had a medical appointment that couldn't be delayed. It's only 35 miles by train as my car is not available, but it has honestly been horrendous and the nastiness on here is really horrible and unnecessary.

Laughing at other peoples misfortune really isnt a good look. I'm still not home and I'm not the only one.

I don't know how people without cars manage day to day.

igelkott2026 · 24/06/2026 18:02

I think the OP's point was that her employer advised to WFH but some people went in to be performative and have now come unstuck.

I'd like the aircon too but I'd have a lot of walking in the heat and the risk of cancelled train so haven't gone in.

It's a terrible point though.

ALovelyPinkUnicorn · 24/06/2026 20:47

chocoluv · 24/06/2026 20:04

It’s not about inventing things, it’s about suggesting that there are potentially other reasons her colleagues chose to go into the office and none of them revolve around her.

I know imagine people not having @Loveaghost at the centre of all they do!
imagine those of us in Frontline roles that can’t work from home..
my bil who can’t as has a noisy 10 month old
my neice in a house share….
lots of issues why people would prefer to work from work!

VividPinkTraybake · 24/06/2026 20:48

roses2 · 24/06/2026 18:09

Some people on here don't know how to have a laugh clearly!

Karma got your colleagues good!

Why would we have a laugh at people we don't know being stuck? Also where is the karma. Why is them going in a moral failing that needs punished?

WhatHappenedToYourFurnitureCuz · 24/06/2026 20:49

Loveaghost · 24/06/2026 19:43

I think perhaps a lot of people on here don’t work in big companies and don’t understand the structure. Being a senior director does not make me these people’s line manager nor does it make me a member of the SLT.

I only said it as pp said I was probably on performance management which is far from the truth. I probably shouldn’t have bitten - and now I’m paying for it!

No, the problem you've had is that we do know how companies work and caught you out in your silly lie.

BlakeCarrington · 24/06/2026 20:50

I went to the office in central London today and it was fine. Train in from the burbs was fine. Tube was fine. Aircon was lovely. I think it’s too much panic about a bit of weather. And you sound like a rotten colleague OP laughing at their misfortune.

VividPinkTraybake · 24/06/2026 20:51

SevenYellowHammers · 24/06/2026 18:42

Really? I’m gleeful reading about it! I love to see arse lickers get their just desserts. No body likes a creep.

Well the consensus seems to be that people like them more than people who laugh at fellow human beings and talk about karma

VividPinkTraybake · 24/06/2026 20:53

ChillingWithMySnowmies · 24/06/2026 18:44

i think the people being vile to the OP for being a bit gloaty that people that have gone into work against advice, spent the day being smug about it, and have now come undone and are suffering the consequences, maybe ought to consider that they aren't being ANY better than the OP.

Edited

Well tbf we only know for sure one person is being smug and that's the o.p, so fair play really.

There is a hundred better ways for the o.p to say this and it didnt involve laughing or karma

Your glee at someone else’s discomfort is such a big ick!

Littlecrake · 24/06/2026 20:54

I’ve had a lovely day at work today in the aircon. I’ve got a good job and a 5 bed house but wfh still means sitting at the kitchen table all day with noise and people and dogs mithering around me. I absolutely hate working from home and would only do it as a last resort. A weirdo “senior director” making spiteful jabs about being a suck-up wouldn’t factor into my decision.

VividPinkTraybake · 24/06/2026 20:55

catslovehairties · 24/06/2026 18:45

No, po-faced as in completely unable to lighten up and have a laugh - everything has to be so serious and formal and nobody can be giggled at because they did something stupid and are now suffering the cosequences.

Why would we "giggle" at people we don't know being inconveniences? Why would that be a sign of humour?

MaryBeardsShoes · 24/06/2026 20:56

God I’m glad I don’t work with you.

Not in my case, I was blissfully cool at home. I just know from managing a team that people can have all sorts of reasons to wish to /or need to work from an office that have nothing to do with being a suck up

Well yes, I know that and that there are plenty of people who came in for other reasons. I acknowledged this in my post!!!

Another person who totally missed the point of my post. Maybe I should have but the word 'circumstantially' in bold. The weather is affecting reading ability I see.

handsdownthebest · 24/06/2026 20:57

Plenty of people went into their London offices because they are air conditioned.
And some of the tube lines are also air conditioned and have not had any issues.
You sound like a knob

and sadly a teacher too

No, you have misunderstood my post. Perhaps the heat is getting to you too?
