Always wash a watermelon on the outside before eating.

I didn't and now I have, ahem, the runs to put it lightly. This is the mostly likely culprit.

Public service announcement over.

I always do anyway, but could your, let’s say, digestive issues, be down to the amount of watermelon you’ve eaten?

Namechange9871 · 24/06/2026 16:51

I don't understand... You don't eat the outside?

Yeah, this makes as much sense as washing a banana or orange before eating.

I'm assuming she's referring to soil contamination when cutting it up, such as e.coli although I highly suspect OP got a little carried away with her consumption of delicious watermelon.

Ah... Yes, I think she'd likely know about if if she had e-coli!

…I wash it as I buy segments cut from huge watermelons from the local Turkish supermarket. They’re wrapped in cling film so the skin gets all juicy and sticky.

True. I thought if you had e-coli you’re struggling to know which end to put over the toilet.

WatermelonForBreakfast · 24/06/2026 17:05

I'm sorry I'm deluded from the mayhem. I meant I didn't wash it haha.

Watermelon is a known vector for e.coli infection. I’d never eat commercially produced watermelon.

WatermelonForBreakfast · 24/06/2026 17:06

Oh sorry I thought I wrote I didn't cut it. Was correcting an error I didn't make.

The knife on the outer hard shell can push bacteria inside - its a thing according to Google. Can be quite dangerous.

A friend of mine always gave her kids watermelon if they got constipated. Always did the trick apparently
maybe you had too much ?

WatermelonForBreakfast · 24/06/2026 17:09

Only less than a quarter! It was a mini one.

Hope you’re feeling ok!

This is the kind of thing I should do, but I know I won’t and could only be bothered with when pregnant due to the risk of listeria.

godmum56 · 24/06/2026 17:22

I remember years ago visiting New Orleans (early 70's well before the floods) and seeing slices of watermelon being sold as "belly wash"

lovecheesymash · 24/06/2026 18:03

I remember seeing an article saying that water melons should always be washed before cutting, as apparently the outside skin is a common source of nasty bacteria that gets transferred to the inside from the knife when cutting into the melon.

TheIdlerReturns · 24/06/2026 18:06

Have never done that ... on the grounds that you don't eat the skin?

XenoBitch · 24/06/2026 18:06

I am really fancying watermelon now.

BreakingBroken · 24/06/2026 18:08

fertilizers used and laying about in the fields contaminate the hard outer skin of melons (watermelon cantaloup etc.) when you cut through them with a knife the knife spreads a thin layer of bacteria onto the surface of the inner melon where is happily grows. the more you cut the more it spreads.

BurnoutBee · 24/06/2026 18:10

Well I never knew that. But I do now. Thanks for the info and hope you feel better soon.

Ive seen some packaged fruit from three supermarkets have been recalled for salmonella. So could be the same factory etc.

Thanks, that’s useful information. And thanks to you too @WatermelonForBreakfast.

DP has bought a watermelon at my suggestion but I’m immunocompromised, so washing it is a very good idea 👍

ThreeStripeQueen · 24/06/2026 18:19

How do you know it’s the watermelon?
I always wash ours anyway because DS2 eats the skin.
