Always wash a watermelon on the outside before eating.

I didn't and now I have, ahem, the runs to put it lightly. This is the mostly likely culprit.

Public service announcement over.

…I wash it as I buy segments cut from huge watermelons from the local Turkish supermarket. They’re wrapped in cling film so the skin gets all juicy and sticky.

That what I buy from the shop over the road, then cut it into big chunks and store it in the fridge. Amazing stuff in a heatwave. So if it’s been contaminated when cutting then I can’t do anything about it. I’m afraid this thread won’t stop me buying it though! Hope you feel better soon OP.

fertilizers used and laying about in the fields contaminate the hard outer skin of melons (watermelon cantaloup etc.) when you cut through them with a knife the knife spreads a thin layer of bacteria onto the surface of the inner melon where is happily grows. the more you cut the more it spreads.

Ah that's interesting, twas a particularly seedy one so I did get fancy with the knife inside as well.

Thanks, that’s useful information. And thanks to you too @WatermelonForBreakfast.

DP has bought a watermelon at my suggestion but I’m immunocompromised, so washing it is a very good idea 👍

I'm not immune compromised exactly but I do take a very low dose of an immune suppressant. Its never been an issue before but I'm knocking a few years older now.

It was from Waitrose BTW. Wonder if I should tell them.

What about other types of melon? As I dont really like watermelon but have to say, generally speaking, I have never washed any melon. The reasons make sense - just wondered if it is was a particular peculiarity of watermelons, compared to say honeydew.

Ooh just learned Waitrose grapes were affected too. I ate a lot of them the day before too. Well this has been a fun thread!

Surely everyone knows that? After the whole hepatitis thing decades ago. The people who are paid peanuts to pick melons just pee where they are standing. You need to give them a jolly good scrub...
