Am I being unreasonable to be annoyed that DS is wearing trainers with NO SOCKS in this heat?

Hi everyone,

With this crazy heatwave, DS’s school has actually been really sensible and announced that the kids can wear their PE kits and trainers instead of their usual strict uniform and school shoes. Honestly, I was relieved at first!

However, DS has decided that because he's wearing trainers, he is absolutely refusing to wear socks. He's insisting it's "too hot" for them and has gone off to school completely sockless.

Am I being unreasonable to be annoyed/angry about this? I get that it’s boiling, but, the smell?! The blisters? The absolute state of his trainers by the end of the week? I feel like the school threw us a bone by letting them wear comfortable gear, and he’s just taken it a step too far.

Would you be annoyed, or should I just pick my battles and let it go given the temperature?

How old is he? I’d pick your battles and leave him be.

ACatNamedRobin · 24/06/2026 12:38

If he stinks when he's back I'd tell him that.
And ask him to wash ASAP.

FionnulaTheCooler · 24/06/2026 12:39

He'll get horrendous blisters and won't do it again. I did similar as a teenager, went out all day riding my bike in trainers with no socks and the backs of my heels were red raw and agony by the time I got home.

The heat is clearly getting to you in a very very very bad way

catslovehairties · 24/06/2026 12:41

I can't imagine giving a single shit about this.

Aninkling · 24/06/2026 12:41

Pick your battles. Obviously

maybe pick him up some trainer socks if you have time, which don’t show at all

This isn't something I could get worked up about.

scalt · 24/06/2026 12:48

I was the teenager who did exactly this: at the first hint of warm weather, lots of us wore our Reebok Classics sockless in the 90s, including for PE, before invisible socks became a thing. And yes, the adults warned us about blisters and smells and so on, but we did it anyway. Some of them were sockless, too!

If he insists, he'll find out the hard way. Personally, I think the popular alternative of socks and sliders looks absolutely awful, and that probably has unintended consequences of its own.

Are you suspecting a foot fetishist?

Aninkling · 24/06/2026 12:48

This op is OBSESSED about socks

Who cares? Honestly.

Sally2791 · 24/06/2026 12:49

His feet his choice. I probably wouldn’t notice!

FloodlightsOnTheSquare · 24/06/2026 13:53

Can’t imagine even noticing if my son was wearing socks or not 🤷‍♀️

I never wear socks with trainers and have survived this far with no blisters.
