Why does unusual weather prompt such dramatic headlines in the UK?

Why do we always have to make such a drama out of the weather in this country? The headlines are screaming doom and gloom with red and amber 'warnings' everywhere because it is hot (and yes, it is hot!). It's the same when we have a tiny dusting of snow in the winter - schools close, transport problems abound, stupid dramatic headlines! I've just taken a look at some of the foreign press - Le Figaro, El Pais, Bildzeitung (all published in countries experiencing the same sort of weather) and only the French actually mention it on their front page! How did we allow ourselves to be frightened and manipulated when we have a period of unusual weather?

The truth is we love a bit of drama.

Lomonald · Yesterday 09:17

Because if the weather didn't report then the public and social media would blame weather forecasters for not reporting, also the new forecasting and reporting on extreme weather is a government initiative inform.

The only thing that irks me, is im not in a heatwave area and it can be a bit over kill, as if all of the uk is in a heatwave.

endash · Yesterday 09:20

Because drama drives clicks. Editors know what readers react to, and in the UK most people are still mildly weather obsessed.

plus, right now, climate Armageddon is a bit of light relief from Trump, government in-fighting, Putin, the rise of extreme politics, and the World Cup.

toffeeappleturnip · Yesterday 09:21

Because we are fascinated by our own unusual, extreme, unpredictable, wonderful weather.

The Brits love talking about the weather - we are famous for it.

I have 3 different weather pages on the go - blitzortung, met weather map, met local forecast. I am good at getting prepared for weather.

Love it.

You don't have to be a climate change denier to find the media dramatic.

You're right op. Every bit of sun is a heatwave, dusting of snow is a blizzard, someone being slightly miffed is furious, etc.

The media switched some time ago from reporting facts to selling feelings. Reading the news should leave you more informed, not angry, scared, depressed or frustrated.

Sinkysocks · Yesterday 09:23

20 people have died in Europe so far in this heatwave. It’s a bit ignorant to call it ‘some weather’.

RudolphTheReindeer · Yesterday 09:24

Because it's dangerous

GreatOffWhiteFalcon · Yesterday 09:26

Because people can die of hypothermia and heatstroke? Because our infrastructure can't cope with it?

CollieH9g · Yesterday 09:29

A load of drama so train companies can justify cancelling services, schools can close early, crap services can be blamed on 'extreme heat'. We have a heat wave/storm/ snow most years, getting in a car on an average day probably carries more risk...

PistachioTiramisu · Yesterday 09:30

Yes, I do agree with that, but how is it other countries' press aren't obsessed with the weather??

OP posts:
Visiblyabove25 · Yesterday 09:32

British people are literally famous for being obsessed with the weather, so it’s natural for headlines about extreme weather to get more engagement here than elsewhere.

I think our infrastructure is less equipped to deal with it too, so the dangers of extreme heat are genuinely higher here.

Lomonald · Yesterday 09:33

You say obsessed others say cautious and informative
, although i was in spain last year and there was floods in Valencia and surrounding and phones were going off with local alert,. So other countries are "obsessed "

SuperbOwls · Yesterday 09:34

Because in the heatwave of 2022, around 3000 people in the UK died as a direct result of "a bit of weather". Vastly more across Europe.

If a few dramatic headlines make people be sensible in the heat, drink more water, check on elderly neighbours etc then please dramatize away.

But in your examples - 2/3 are facts, not feelings. It is a heatwave, it is a blizzard. Yes, a lot of the media dramatise it but I think it does need to be reported on.

We have to recognise that it’s unusual circumstances for much of our country to be in near 40deg heat, to the extent that it’s affecting schools, transport - that’s newsworthy.

The (maybe naive) hope is that the news prompts discussion and action over how we adapt the infrastructure of our country to cope with the extremes… like air con in schools and public buildings.

AbsoluteHoot · Yesterday 09:36

So much drama! Mostly on here tbh.

Apart from the odd ‘isn’t it hot?’ comment, in my real life, it’s barely mentioned.

yonem · Yesterday 09:36

It is on the front page of El País website. It’s also on the front page of Le Monde, Corriere della Sera and la Repubblica. The heat in France is on the front page of Süddeutsche Zeitung.

Why does unusual weather prompt such dramatic headlines in the UK?
PrettyLittleRose · Yesterday 09:37

Because it's unprecedented. Very unusual weather, especially for JUNE - in the UK. It's reaching dangerous levels.

Makes a change from all the news about war in the Middle East. That news has ZERO to do with the UK, yet it's on our news channels every single day.

This is a discussion forum. Confused

Backedoffhackedoff · Yesterday 09:42

I think we are addicted to drama. There always has to be something to hold the headlines and we need to have something to look at/ discuss

i don’t think it’s related to climate change- in fact I don’t think it helps long term focus and policy change/ legislation to have this short term hysteria forgotten tomorrow.

fact is despite the increasing climate we are very lucky in this county that we have a moderate climate and are without regular weather emergencies. Can’t imagine how we’d cope with tornados, earthquakes, serious flooding when we have this reaction to a few days of temperature that countries within our continent experience all summer. It’s horrible, it’s unfamiliar, but it doesn’t really justify the drama let’s be honest

I am their perfect target audience 😄

(love the world cup too though)

Because we are lazy, bored and want an excuse not to go to work! and the kids don't want to go to school.

In other countries, people worry about survival. Coming back here after a few years away, I noticed a stark contrast in what people complain about because it's comparatively so safe. I'm so grateful to be in the UK! Let us moan about the weather to our hearts content loooool!

PS: it's not even that hot XD

Every bit of sun is not a heatwave.🙄 A heatwave is a specific thing.
