Why does unusual weather prompt such dramatic headlines in the UK?

Why do we always have to make such a drama out of the weather in this country? The headlines are screaming doom and gloom with red and amber 'warnings' everywhere because it is hot (and yes, it is hot!). It's the same when we have a tiny dusting of snow in the winter - schools close, transport problems abound, stupid dramatic headlines! I've just taken a look at some of the foreign press - Le Figaro, El Pais, Bildzeitung (all published in countries experiencing the same sort of weather) and only the French actually mention it on their front page! How did we allow ourselves to be frightened and manipulated when we have a period of unusual weather?

I saw that. So sad. 😞

Who the fuck leaves kids in the car at that age for any length of time no matter what the temperature is

SequoiaTree · 23/06/2026 23:41

All the whinging about "heatwave drama" is far more annoying than the heatwave drama itself

Nonsense.

There’s normal seasonal weather and there’s extreme weather and you are conflating the two.

Weather warnings are real. Smart people heed them.

Fact resistant people talk shite about it
on the internet.🙄 Endangering themselves, their parents, their children, pets and others.

Is it any wonder the UK is going to shit!🤦‍♀️😒

Warrensofthem · 23/06/2026 23:59

But we’re not set up for heat compared to mainland Europe are we? so it feels more dangerous. I lived in European countries during two major heatwaves, (one whilst heavily pregnant) and it was so easy to navigate that it didn’t really register beyond thinking how brilliant it was to be in the pool everyday or feel like being on holiday.
For one there are more outdoor swimming options like municipal pools. Then things are open later at night, people aren’t rushing to get everything done in the peak heat hours. More places have air con, homes are designed with the possibility of extreme heat in mind.
Because high temperatures are still relatively unusual in the Uk, people behave in extreme ways when a heatwave comes. Excessive drinking, inexperienced people open water swimming in dangerous places and so on.

They need to cater for the people who won’t put suncream regularly on their kids or keep them hydrated, will go out with elderly parents in the sun, will go drinking and get dehydrated and end up in a and e, will bring their dogs out and get them burnt etc etc etc

TooBigForMyBoots · 24/06/2026 01:51

Just watched Paul Cox on GB News saying children are being told to stay indoors or they will literally die.🤯🤯🤯

Lying, ignorant cunt!

It's not even going to be that hot now. Met office is predicting 37c for Wednesday, not the 40c being predicted yesterday. As they say in Aus, Slip, Slop Slap.

😫

Anarchy99 · 24/06/2026 03:15

Tbf it’s as tedious as the millions of threads moaning about people having an issue with the weather 🤷‍♀️

Sinkysocks · 24/06/2026 10:50

40 people have drown in France since the start of this heatwave. What exactly is dramatic about talking about that?

Nonnim · 24/06/2026 10:57

i think you will find that for e.g. media in France is also headlining this weather, because it is unprecedented and extremely dangerous. And set to get worse.

BBC loves to catastrophise and terrify old people who are their remaining viewers.
Really annoys me that my mother who believes all their claptrap thinks people will be dropping like flies in the streets and supermarkets will be empty with panic burning /just like they over-egged covid.
Really irresponsible.

Araminta1003 · 24/06/2026 11:05

Because people do actually die if they are very young or very old or just young and reckless. And trains aren’t air conditioned and people can get stuck on them with no water etc and lots of middle aged people in this country are really unhealthy - imagine being trapped on a train if you were diabetic, or had high cholesterol etc - so they warn people. And some idiots still go out drinking in the sun and end up in A&E .
And also a lot of kids have finished A levels and GCSEs and likely to do stupid things anyway.

1500 people died in last year’s heatwave. it isn’t just old people - plenty of young people die as a result of swimming in dangerous areas.

We have a body of water in our area which has had to be fenced off with warnings about the danger but every year some teens think they know better and break in and drown.

There was someone on one of the many millions of ‘people overreact about the heat’ threads who said she had epilepsy and that she was more prone to fits in the heat.

I am curious to know why so many people get so wound up and dismissive about the fact some people struggle with the heat for whatever reason. Why does it matter to you if you don’t?

SuitcaseAndSecrets · 24/06/2026 13:58

Britons have a long cultural habit of talking about the weather. It's a shared experience that everyone can relate to, regardless of politics, class, or region.
A dramatic weather story is therefore a relatively safe and reliable way for media outlets to capture public attention. While headlines can be exaggerated, some weather events that once would have been exceptional are becoming more important. The UK's record-breaking temperatures, severe floods, and prolonged heatwaves are receiving greater attention because they have real implications for public safety and infrastructure.

KittyCorncrake · 24/06/2026 14:01

It matters because it gives people an incentive and excuse to skive so services go to pot and kids are unschooled.

So how is moaning about people struggling going to help? Does it make you feel better? Lucky you if you don’t struggle in it.

Yes, I do agree with that, but how is it other countries' press aren't obsessed with the weather??

They are at the moment!

KaleidoscopeSmile · 24/06/2026 15:05

I wish there was a Weather Bores" board for all of this tedious shit so that I could hide the whole board.

SereneFinch · 24/06/2026 15:06

It’s been overestimated anyway - 34 in London now and forecast 32 tomorrow. Hot for sure but not red alert crisis level

In a previous life (20 years ago) had a team of employees in China, all top notch graduates.

In 'English School' they were taught that, in conversation, people from the UK obsess about two things. First the weather. Second politics. 'Never discuss the latter' but the former is always good if conversation is a struggle.

As an aside, in English School they used to watch EastEnders to aid the education. Being from up North (and being particularly broad accented) they struggled to understand me initially.
