Today’s exciting thread - vacuum cleaners

FlightwasfromNewark · 22/06/2026 09:16

Need to replace our vacuum cleaner, currently have a lightweight plugged in Dyson which is slowly dying. Could I have your opinions, pros and cons, on a replacement please, for carpets and hard floors, needs to be lightweight and able to cope with a stair and my ever shedding hair. Did buy a cordless vax a few years back, it’s ok for a quick whizz around, but useless for a proper clean. Thanks

My MIL had a GTech which seemed to be OK.

Following! My Charles vacuum (Henry’s big brother) is on his last wheels .. we have 3 cars and a snow dog so plenty of hair to hoover uP! I was looking at the Miele pet hair hoover so hopefully some recommendations!
we had a Shark mini hoover thing before this Charles and it was amazing to start with, get too close to a sock and it’s gone! But alas it didn’t last long

Belladog1 · 22/06/2026 09:21

I used to swear by Dyson, but IMO they went downhill. I now buy Shark and have two. They suck like buggery.

id never buy another Dyson cordless again. Lasted barely 18 months and much like Triggers broom every part was pretty much replaced.
I have a shark corded one which seems to be doing ok.
honestly my next one will probably be going back to a Henry or trying one of the Henry corded uprights

Tonissister · 22/06/2026 09:24

I have Henry. Most cleaning companies, film sets etc use Henry so I assumed it would be the best.

Very good at sucking. Very easy to empty and keep clean. Good attachments.

But very annoying. Falls over all the time. Lying on his side gurning in an infuriating way. And tricky for stairs as the cylinder is way too wide to sit on a step.

Edited to add: and they last forever. I think I have had two in thirty years.

Sadcafe · 22/06/2026 09:24

Shark corded as well, but they are fairly heavy

CeliaCanth · 22/06/2026 09:25

Miele. Had a shark which was good, until it suddenly wasn’t, and started to smell of burning.

That made me laugh, thanks. Off to investigate the upright Henry’s (that doesn’t sound right 😂)

miele cat and dog (even with no pets)

bought one in 2011 and still going, also 2000w which is now banned apparently

CeliaCanth · 22/06/2026 09:36

@FlightwasfromNewark not particularly. In fact i think the Miele is lighter than the Shark.

Fiddlesticks1 · 22/06/2026 14:57

Loving my shark cordless. It moves effortlessly from hard floor to carpet. Only downside is it highlights the dog hairs on the hard flooring. 😂I also have a Shark handheld which I use to hoover the stairs- an absolute game changer from using a corded Dyson.

I love my shark but when it breaks I want a robot vacuum

MamaBobo · 22/06/2026 15:23

We have a Sebo (the 2005 version of the current Automatic X7) and it’s fantastic. 21 this year and still going strong, living in the country with kids and dogs. Nothing in our house has lasted as long as it! It’s quite heavy though. Sebo do cylinder cleaners as well as lighter uprights. Can’t recommend them highly enough.

SmotherhoodandApplePie · 22/06/2026 15:28

I have a Miele and it's great.

Crwysmam · 22/06/2026 16:04

Meile. I have two, one small cylinder that is perfect for hard floors and stairs, and a big brute of an upright that I use upstairs which is mostly carpeted. The small cylinder one is probably 25yrs old but was originally in our second home and wasn’t used regularly. The other one is over 15yrs old. It is heavy but very easy to move around. Having two means I don’t have to lug them up and down stairs.

I gave up on Dysons, they were so flimsy and easily broken. The only thing I’ve had to replace on my cylinder Meile was the metal hose tube when the latch keeping it extended broke.

I’ve just de-dog haired the house today. Our lab is better than the met office at predicting a heat wave. She has dropped her coat over the last week in readiness. Both hoovers performed perfectly.

We also have a little Shark cordless for picking up stuff between hoovering. It’s great on hard floors but not as thorough on carpets. Having a black labrador means you need a powerful hoover.

anniegun · 22/06/2026 16:06

Meile corded , miles better than the 4 rechargable stick ones I have used

Morepositivemum · 22/06/2026 16:08

Henry/ Hettie is amazing but soooo heavy to lug around. I actually started a similar thread months ago but Hettie has decided to continue to work hard so not replacing yet but I’d love something cordless!!

HighlandCauliflower · 22/06/2026 16:12

I love the shark lift away duo clean, its not the lightest vacuum but as its a lift away you can reducecthe weight for some tasks.
Shark have excellent customer service after purchase for any issues.

Miele Guard L1 good and lightweight

GasPanic · 22/06/2026 16:24

Shark handheld and Henry wet and dry for the big jobs.

Shark handheld is ok just for doing small stuff and not needing to lug the big one around. Big one does the job its supposed to.

tothesea · 22/06/2026 18:52

Agree with Sebo..18 years and counting here. It’s been quite a workhorse, reliable, effective and purchased after reading a thread just like this one!

Hope pup is coping in this heat. Will investigate Miele and Sebo.
