To think it a shame and a bad example that rugby team set to children regarding excessive drinking

Localish team did a victory parade yesterday on an open top bus
yes that’s good

but they seem to use alcohol and such a crutch and can’t help think all the kids there seeing that thinking it’s normal and what you do
it’s just a bit disappointing that culture is still like that in this day and age

Come across to me that they lack confidence without it, which is a shame

Turntheswitch · 22/06/2026 08:28

How do you know they were drinking on the parade? All holding beers cans etc?

motorlady · 22/06/2026 08:35

If they were drinking, it could have been worse. They could have been singing typical rugby songs at the top of their voices!

Yeah drinking on the bus
even to the point of having wear googles
throwing alcohol around
floor covered in beer

You appear to be over analysing why a team of rugby players had a drink during their celebrations. It’s probably fair to say they were simply celebrating rather than needing a ‘crutch’ and ‘lacking confidence’

Are you close to someone who has alcohol issues, or are you struggling yourself?

Drinking to the pint of having to wear goggles? WTF does this mean? What kind of goggles? What for?

SpottyPyjama · 22/06/2026 08:39

They were celebrating a special occasion. It does children no harm to see that adults drink on special occasions.

Would you also complain about wine and champagne being served at a wedding?

TheBloomingDahlia · 22/06/2026 08:49

If they were throwing around enough beer that they’d brought goggles with them then I’m surprised there was any left to drink 🤔

MickyMoonshine · 22/06/2026 08:54

You seem to be overthinking this. They were celebrating!
I went to Man City victory parade last month and both the women and men’s team were drinking on the buses. The women were drinking bottles of champagne - it looked great fun!

HotBothered · 22/06/2026 09:05

ski goggles to protect from the amount of booze thrown

no I don’t have a problem with alcohol myself but it’s the excess fair enough a good few drinks but it’s all over the floor like a giant puddle
messy
in a gross excessive way

No because they are not chucking it everywhere and it’s not really excessive and kids don’t lookup to it the same

Yes there was drinking then
football has cleaned up its act from the Gazza days
rugby is still far behind

also I feel bad for the younger rugby lads that actually don’t wanna get sucked into that
but it is part of the culture

OP posts:
Branleuse · 22/06/2026 09:09

I thought that sort of thing was as much part of rugby culture as the game itself

Wowisthisit · 22/06/2026 09:14

So, in short, winning team drank champagne?
This is not unusual in anything. Have you ever watched F1 where they soak each other and the crowd when they win? I could go on but it happens in sport everywhere. Clearly the sportsmen don't drink like that all the time or they wouldn't be winning.
I'm guessing you are talking about the Northampton Saints.
If you are that bothered don't go to any sporting events finals as you will see it everywhere and if you think football has cleaned up its act I think you're incorrect.

The event I’m talking about was last month… not during the ‘Gazza’ days.

Yes that’s what I’m saying I’m agreeing with you!!

its not excessive !

football has cleaned up its act since gazza days

I completely with you @HotBothered
One of my brothers has been very involved with rugby for years - he has always had an issue with the drinking culture.

SamAylward · 22/06/2026 11:45

I see the Blue Meanies are out in force today.

Turntheswitch · 22/06/2026 13:43

Were you watching the parade with your children @HotBothered ?

Decacaffeinatednow · 22/06/2026 13:44

This was posted a few weeks ago. A number of posters seem to think there is no issue.
