To think it a shame and a bad example that rugby team set to children regarding excessive drinking

Localish team did a victory parade yesterday on an open top bus
yes that’s good

but they seem to use alcohol and such a crutch and can’t help think all the kids there seeing that thinking it’s normal and what you do
it’s just a bit disappointing that culture is still like that in this day and age

Yeah drinking on the bus
even to the point of having wear googles
throwing alcohol around
floor covered in beer

I agree with you, they should respect their role model status.

You could complain to the club.

Yes, of course, it’s a horrible example. That’s why I wouldn’t take my kids to that sort of thing. That said, I suspect a lot of the parents who do are already setting a bad example for their children around alcohol.

This smacks of someone who in the past had a problem with alcohol

that they would jump to this

It’s rugby culture, you won’t change it. Presumably they don’t drink like that all the time though and take their athleticism seriously for the most part. I watched an international game over the autumn and was struck by how fit some of the players looked as opposed to when I was a youngster and the majority of rugby players looked like someone’s overweight, hairy dad. Grin

They won obviously a pretty big league. So these guys are generally going to be very very fit and athletic.

You appear to be over analysing why a team of rugby players had a drink during their celebrations. It’s probably fair to say they were simply celebrating rather than needing a ‘crutch’ and ‘lacking confidence’

Are you close to someone who has alcohol issues, or are you struggling yourself?

This.

They sign up to play rugby, not bring up your kids.

I think you need to separate out the two things.

One - a victory parade, celebrating a real achievement with an open top bus tour. I don't actually see why the players need alcohol on the bus but I don't have a problem with it either. I think it goes with the territory of celebrating things in the UK.

However I do think there is an issue in most (all?) rugby clubs with the drinking culture and 'ceremonies' such as players having to down a pint faster than the opposition player, when they've been chosen as back / forward / player of the match, or for other "fines" at socials and so forth. That, I do see as a problem, yes.

Plantchoc · 23/06/2026 06:20

The op has avoided confirming whether she’s involved with this rugby team. Clearly - yes she is. How so I wonder

either way…. There are clearly successful athletes in a hardcore sport requiring very very good fitness levels. I think that is a rather inspiring example for children
