I haven’t but I hear it’s worth a visit- June is the best month to see the puffins!

Absolutely love Tenby, favourite place to holiday as a child, also loved Mumbles, especially the ice cream!

Love visiting Aviemore, Dunkeld and Pitlochry in Scotland!

SinuousTendrils · 21/06/2026 17:02

If you're into ornithology, OP, visit Fair Isle in Scotland! It can be a bit of a pain to get to, depending on the weather, and you might get stuck there, but it is BEAUTIFUL! A lot of the tourists tend to go for the bird-watching, walking and knitwear tradition. I'd recommend all three! I'd have liked to go to Foula, too, but unfortunately didn't have the time.

For Wales, I'd say Ynys Llanddwyn, Ynys Enlli (Bardsey), Eyri National Park, and I've heard that Skomer and Skokholm are nice (I got chatting to some ornithologists...).

Thank you for those recommendations. I have actually always wanted to go to Fair Isle.
Also thanks for the Welsh suggestions, because I'm less familiar with Wales.

devildeepbluesea · 21/06/2026 17:21

I do like St Davids and go there lots for work, which is nice.
South Hams area of Devon
Symonds Yat
Spent most of my childhood summers on Gower, so that holds a special place in my heart.

I've never heard of that - need to look it up.

Before you go, read His Bloody Project by Graeme McRae Burnett.

I’ve not been to the sanctuary as we’ve always been in October but I absolutely adore Rathlin and the whole of the Antrim Coast.

We stay in Ballycastle but the whole of the coastal
area is stunning.

Wales 🏴󠁧󠁢󠁷󠁬󠁳󠁿

Snowdonia - but around Dolgellau and Cadr Idris. The view from above Llwyngwril and Barmouth is just jaw dropping. Dyfi is a lovely coastal town in the same area.

The Pembrokeshire beaches are also amazing. We loved Bosherston and Stackpole.

Wales has so much to offer. Bala has a big natural lake and is in the Eryri National Park. Coastal areas vary but there's plenty of it. Llandudno is pretty but touristy compared to other resorts, some of which have a castle nearby.
Ynys Môn (Anglesey) has beautiful beaches.
Pembrokeshire and Gower have beautiful beaches. Most of the countryside is green and pleasant.
The cities are small apart from Cardiff.

I'd do something like pick somewhere within a short drive from other places and visit several places in one holiday.

Where you go depends on what you like doing. You could also combine a visit to Wales with a visit to an English city or town that is close to the Welsh border.

scienceteachersarefun · 21/06/2026 17:31

Would you recommend that I stay at Ballycastle, @EssexCat?

The beaches of Aberdeenshire. Just gorgeous.

We’re going to Rosehearty in October - is that the same sort of area? I know it’s reasonably near Aberdeen.

Would you recommend that I stay at Ballycastle, @EssexCat?

I would - it’s a lovely coastal town right on the beach. Great ice cream and fish and chips. But not tacky seaside town at all.

JulietteHasAGun · 21/06/2026 17:34

the forests around Aberfoyle

I used to live just outside Tenby. Barafundle Bay is a beautiful beach, loads of the coast is gorgeous.
