Why do so many Labour MPs want Kier out?

Im not a fan of Labour/ Starmer as such, but I don’t think he’s a bad politician. Why do so many Labour MPs want him out?

Because they want to hold on to their constituencies, and they know KS is very unlikely to win another general elections.

They think they have a better chance with AB

But why are they all jumping behind burnham? Genuine question. He makes out he’s a northern normal type of guy (ie not Westminster elite) but he’s Cambridge then Special advisor then MP route. Not like some labour MPs who have really worked their way up - like Angela Raynor for example.

what are his policies? Or is it just he’s not Starmer.?

i assume there will have to be some sort of leadership contest though. In a way it’s strange- labour has a massive majority and surely many long standing MPs who could be PM but Burnham gets the job even though he wasn’t an MP at the time of the general election.
loads of people complained about how Liz Truss and then Sunak got the PM jobs saying there was no mandate.

I'll note this.

Back just after the 2024 election a jubilant Nigel Farage was predicting there would be an election in 2027, not 2029 as is the usual expected date.

The assumption is that Labour MPs and trade union backers have done the maths and know Starmer won't be able to win on that. But here's the catch. Replacing him with someone who's literally been express fast tracked in just leaves people feeling they haven't formally backed Burnham either. I don't think Burnham could govern now all the way I til 2029. Hell have to call an election within months of his coronation.

Oh FFs, the last thing we need is more uncertainty!

Correction the earliest ref I found for Farage predicting a 2027 election is last year

https://www.bbc.co.uk/news/articles/c4g75we8jk9o#comments

Leader of the labour socialist campaign group John McDonnell is urging a straight fast track for Burnham rather than any sort of competition. He said there's not enough members in parliament to get the 80 nominations needed for their candidate, nor Wes Streeting who is now seen as a hated Tory so they are pressing for this

If Burnham really does run on centrist policies..
I can almost hear the cries of betrayal that will come within months weeks from one or other of:
Clive Lewis
Nadia Whittome
Rachael Maskell

Nigel Farage

We must be ready for early election, Nigel Farage tells Reform UK

NIgel Farage announces he is setting up a department to prepare for government at the Reform conference.

I don't want Andy Burnham and his leftie policies. This will ensure Labour is out in the next general election. It will be the Corbyn years all over again. Except at least Jeremy Corbyn didnt get the chance to bankrupt the country. Looks like Andy Burnham will.

From Another Talkboard:

"People who used to say the next Labour leader should be female: where are they now?"

What specific policies are people relating to here?

The big issue at the next election will be immigration, which Labour under Kier have greatly reduced?

People only care about unauthorised immigration which has not come down at all it has increased.

Starmer does have integrity. Look up all of the pro-bono work he did for Helen Steel on the McLibel case.

A human rights lawyer so does naff all about genocide in Gaza and cosies up to Trump and Netanyahu…. Where’s the integrity?

I'm not a Labour supporter by any stretch, but how did he cosied up to Trump and Netanyahu? He judged Iran and Trump really well. As to Gaza - we have different views on this.

Indeed.
Do you think Angela Rayner will repeat this tweet, slightly adjusted? Or will she instead, throw her hat in the ring?

There's also this from Burnham in 2022 asking for a general election in response to the Truss Sunak leadership hustings

https://nitter.net/pic/orig/media%2FHLWavVfWUAAyQt9.jpg

This is from a thread started by a former Labour leader at Haringey. It looks like a fair chunk of UK Labour squarely blame Burnham for starting the manoeuvres and won't forgive him.

https://nitter.net/perayahmet/status/2068787319935569969#m

It's utterly on Burnham. Every MP could have stood firm and tackled the disinformation and shown the evidence of this government working hard for us. But they didn't. They split and ran and cried. Starting with that idiot @CatherineWest1

MeetMeOnTheCorner · 22/06/2026 09:48

@nearlylovemyusername We aren’t trusted in the Middle East and we established boundaries there back in the day. We ought to keep fairly quiet now. Plus Labour has issues with anti semitism, and of course Starmer’s previous career has no standing on this. He was the pm and had to consider everything . I agree, a personal crusade isn’t possible.

Lalgarh · 22/06/2026 10:02

He's resigned.

He will stay on whilst nominations are received. Nominations open 9 July

SpottyAlpaca · 22/06/2026 10:07

I sympathise with Keir. I voted for this government & wanted it to succeed. He did his best in what has become an impossible job.

Yes, he should have been much bolder in using his massive majority to force through change. Yes, he has made mistakes, but many of them have been blown completely out of proportion by a hysterical media which is addicted to constant chaos. He deserves better than being kicked out by panicking MPs who owe their jobs to him. I wish him well.
