Leaving laundry out overnight

WeeAgnes · 18/06/2026 21:42

I've made the decision to leave the laundry out on the whirly thing overnight, as it's still damp.
I've checked the forecast and there's not a drop of rain on the radar for my locality, yet... it feels a bit... reckless.

What would you do?

Pray tell me, what does “darked on” even mean? (I was able to find something relating to coal fumes in the olden days).

blythet · 18/06/2026 22:18

What does ‘being darked on’ mean?

Isitevensummer · 18/06/2026 22:19

I had to get a new washing machine recently and have failed to press the right icon a few times. By the time I have noticed and the wash is done it’s afternoon so I have left them overnight. I expect judgement from the neighbours but I really dint care

murasaki · 18/06/2026 22:19

Another one who left it out tonight.

LesSanglotsLonguesDesViolonsDAutomne · 18/06/2026 22:20

If the forecast for the following day is good and I have more than one load to dry, I always load up the rotary with the first load the night before to get it started overnight. It’s usually dry by the time I’ve got the first load washed the following morning, or very nearly so. Then I can get the second load up mid-morning and dried by bedtime.

vodkaredbullgirl · 18/06/2026 22:20

Ooh thanks for reminding me, lots of spiders about.

It is from a previous thread about leaving washing out. It just feels wrong to a lot of people but it is difficult to articulate why. The consensus seemed to be that (1) it would be darker on and (2) spiders would come and rub their willies all over it. And that is why washing should be brought in.

I thought that spiders rubbing their willies does not fall under the unbrella of being darked on, I thought it was a separate consequence 😃

I put washing out at 9pm yesterday and it was dry when I checked it at 9am. It's so warm overnight at the moment.

ChittyChittyBoomBoom · 18/06/2026 22:28

Just hung mine out!

I've left.mine out for 5 days before, what does that make me 😳

A gambler. There’s rarely 5 straight days in the UK when it doesn’t rain!

Undertheeaves · 18/06/2026 22:32

Where are all these people based with constant dry weather for drying clothes? It's been warm but relentless fucking rain for weeks here (Eastern Scotland).

I never, ever dry my clothes outside either. I hate it. Appreciate that makes me a moral vacuum and social pariah.

Not Scotland 😆 I'm way down south.

They’re in places other than Eastern Scotland.

I’m in a west of England county and it’s been a bit wet on and off the past week, but we’ve had plenty of consistently dry weather over the past couple of months, when it’s been perfectly possible to look at the forecast and take the opportunity to leave laundry out overnight.

Someone who doesn’t care if her colours fade or her whites go yellow!

VimesandhisCardboardBoots · 18/06/2026 22:37

I leave mine to get darked on all the time, I feel that people can tell when I then wear it, gives me a bit of a rebellious edge.

"Yeah, I'm wearing a T-shirt that many spiders have dragged their willys on, what's it to you?"

Ye can all laugh. I once left a very heavy bedspread out one night the next day when it was dry I picked it up from the decking rail, suddenly gazillions of baby spiders started running over the bedspread towards me. They heard my screaming at the other end of the lane. I was totally freaked out.

The problem was the decking rail, not leaving it out overnight! Washing lines are where washing goes. 😁 I bet decking is full of spiders!

Treetreetreetree · 18/06/2026 22:48

You’re living life on the edge you rebel. I may consider this in the future…..

Copperoliverbear · 18/06/2026 22:49

I always do.

Pistacheeo · 18/06/2026 22:50

Always leave mine out.

Nofeckingway · 18/06/2026 22:56

Pop it in tumble dryer low heat for 6 minutes . Fluffs it up and frys any spiders off .

putitonthewrongway · 18/06/2026 22:56

Often the best time for me to put the washing out is at night, as I don’t have time in the mornings. But it does feel all wrong for some reason.
