I just wanted to hear your favourite things about your home for an uplifting thread.

For me it’s the little things like how the bathroom window opens onto the back so I can look at the trees and sky from the bath!

My Japanese toilet, I absolutely love it.

TheyGrewUp · 18/06/2026 20:23

Its character. Inglenook, panelling, stained glass, the old bell pull and the tinkly bells.

housepeace · 18/06/2026 20:23

My garden, my kitchen, the view at the back over fields and the view over the front of old ancient oak trees and a pond. And although it is a new housing estate it is quiet!

Thaimoon · 18/06/2026 20:23

@MegMortimer always wanted one of those since we visited Japan years ago!

My kitchen, it’s not the fanciest but I just really love it.

The hallway and staircase - so light and airy.

Plenty of storage - after years and years of a tiny house with next to none!

1weekinjuy · 18/06/2026 20:24

So much. I love love love it.

The location (central but quiet) . I can walk everywhere.
The garden…. Perfect size, perfect shape and south facing.
The layout…. Couldn’t ask for better
and the entire interior…. As all my own and everything I have carefully thought about .
I love it.

and icing on the cake….i overhead My teen DD’s friend say to her “your house always smells really nice”

The ceiling window in the bathroom. It has a remote control and a censor so it closes when it rains. Also the garden which we had designed about 6 years ago; it’s brought us a lot of joy (and a few headaches) and the birds and bees have found a home.

Thaimoon · 18/06/2026 20:27

@1weekinjuy how lovely! Do you have a special scent?!! Bake cakes a lot?! I’m intrigued!

Windows open every day without fail come rain or sun
clean interior
and neom candles

and absolutely none of those god forsaken plug in room thingies

Storage, so underrated! I definitely need more

I could have written your post OP! I downsized last year and it was a massive emotional gamble as I was happy where I was, but I couldn’t live it any more-and my bath also looks out over the countryside, coastline and best of all over several horses fields. I adore all the dog walks from my front door. I’m still only 10 minutes from family and friends but it feels like another universe going from a town to semi rural.

It's a very small 1960s council flat but I love-

The light in the kitchen in the summer evenings
The view of the huge park from the kitchen
It's warm, cosy, and full of all my favourite things
It's safe and happy and just lovely to come back to.

Lovely to hear the rain on the roof/window too I bet.

Wow is the bell pull original?

The location - we moved so the teens would have better transport links, and it has really paid off in terms of opportunities for them.

Having two reception rooms so there is nearly always a quiet room when needed, and being able to sit in the sofa and admire the garden from one of them.

No buts needed, size definitely doesn’t always matter 😉

The location, the couch, my little office. It’s my sanctuary.

Ticktockwatchclock · 18/06/2026 20:35

It’s all mine, mortgage paid off and no one else has any say over what I do in it, how I decorate it or who I invite into it.
Also love my bedroom I have just decorated, not to everyone’s taste but I don’t care.

JoyousWriter · 18/06/2026 20:36

The SSSI beyond my garden.

The garden - probably the wildflower lawn.

Supersleepysheepy · 18/06/2026 20:36

I love our large and very wild garden, I love the log burner, the old stone walls, the quirky features, most things really. Our current home is the one where I feel I really belong.

Sounds so lovely and great for wildlife. I bet there are not many ponds around anymore

How great, I have a bit of a wild garden, though not as wild as I would have it if it was just me living here!

The massive garden and the fact the bath looks out over it with no frosted glass, the period features - inglenooks, low ceilings, general wonkiness.

mondaytosunday · 18/06/2026 20:39

My house is a standard box bay Victorian three bed terrace in SW London, extended across the back. Three things I love: the wall of crittal style glass with double doors in the middle overlooking the garden, the extension which I put brick slips on so looks like exposed brick, and my coal effect gas fire.
