I just wanted to hear your favourite things about your home for an uplifting thread.

For me it’s the little things like how the bathroom window opens onto the back so I can look at the trees and sky from the bath!

The view over the town, and the countryside beyond from my landing window and my bedroom at the back of the house. I live on a hill and quite high up. I can see for miles.

Outing AF but this fire place. It’s a ground floor apartment in a converted farm house and this is the lounge. We only moved in this year and I can’t WAIT to dress it for Christmas. I also love the quirkiness of the layout, we access the back yard garden through a door in the bathroom. It’s at the end of a private lane and we have so many birds around, the sound first thing and in the evening is gorgeous. I love parking right outside the front door, after years in a 3rd floor apartment (latterly with a baby and all his paraphernalia to heft up and down).

We’re in the process of decorating and adding colour to every room. This weekend is our bedroom’s turn.

Anyone got a little (or large!) balcony? I’ve always thought that would be nice. Especially for a morning coffee

There isn't an angry man in it.

We moved to a new city a couple of years ago after many happy years living in tiny London flats.

I love loads of things about our new house (the space, the lovely original 1930s panelled doors, the light that fills the rooms, the oak bannister, the massive shower).

But what I really cannot get over is the garden. I love it so much. I will take any excuse to go out there. I had underestimated how lovely for the soul it would be to have my own little patch of nature.

Oh WOW that fireplace is incredible! Is there a working chimney?!

Lying in bed listening to the sea (20m away). Sitting on the gin bench having a large one and looking at the Torridon mountains.

Bryonyberries · 18/06/2026 20:46

My garden and the view from my bedroom window of the gorgeous sunsets in the summer.

Sadly not, there are 2 apartments above us so it’s blocked off, otherwise a stove would have been our first purchase! We do have a fake (electric) one s someone had thoughtfully already installed a socket in the middle, it’s much noisier than we thought when it’s heating, but lovely just to have the flame effect light on.

The location - we moved so the teens would have better transport links, and it has really paid off in terms of opportunities for them.

Having two reception rooms so there is nearly always a quiet room when needed, and being able to sit in the sofa and admire the garden from one of them.

Location is so important. I’ve always wanted to live in the countryside but I know I would hate having to drive to places I can currently walk to. I prefer convenience even with the drawbacks of being central

I could have written your post OP! I downsized last year and it was a massive emotional gamble as I was happy where I was, but I couldn’t live it any more-and my bath also looks out over the countryside, coastline and best of all over several horses fields. I adore all the dog walks from my front door. I’m still only 10 minutes from family and friends but it feels like another universe going from a town to semi rural.

Ditto. I no longer have to drive anywhere to walk the dogs, just leave the house. I'm sitting in my living room next to french windows with a view of the garden. I never thought I would be happy to leave the home I thought was forever - but downsizing has been a fabulous move.

The thing I love most is probably the view to the garden from the main rooms I use daily.

No buts needed, size definitely doesn’t always matter 😉

But 60s flats are normally a good size!

MerelyPlaying · 18/06/2026 20:53

The location (lovely market town and only10 minutes walk away
The light - I’m on a hill, south facing, big windows on stairs, it always seems light.
My kitchen, nothing fancy but works for me.

Mainly the fact that I’ve got all my lovely things around me - second-hand furniture, eBay bargain rug but it’s exactly how I want it and I love it.

Funnily enough since we moved to the countryside we have a good shop and a decent-ish pub restaurant in easy walking distance, neither of which we had when we lived on the outskirts of town! (At least not without trudging back up a massive hill on the way home).

ilovestayingin · 18/06/2026 21:13

My lounge backs on to my garden, I love that I can sit on my sofa and see out to my pride and joy, if I'm watching tv I'm often distracted and end up looking outside instead.
More houses should be designed this way, most lounges seem to face on to a street, much nicer this way around.

Beachdrift · 18/06/2026 21:15

Honestly, as someone who grew up in a tiny, overcrowded house with no privacy, sharing with extended family, and where people no one wanted to see were always just walking in, I love that there is space for us all comfortably, and a gate no one can get past unless I say so. It’s also got a lot of trees around for a suburb close to the city centre, and I’m gradually making a garden out of the side of the hill. Like you, OP, I have a lovely view of trees from my bath, and because we’re high up, I can see right across the city to the countryside on the opposite side. We’re also next door to a derelict wooded site which will almost certainly be developed at some point, but for now it’s a riot of wildlife — foxes, rabbits, squirrels, buzzards.

I know people need houses but it’s always so nice to have spaces where wildlife can live nearby

The planning permission isn’t for housing, which I’d be all in favour of, but student apartments which will be far too expensive for most students, and let to tourists in the vac. The site is also a sensitive one for historical reasons, so I’d like to see at least some of it stay a park…

Cheersmedears123 · 18/06/2026 21:46

The view from every aspect. We have chairs and stools at a few windows simply to sit and look outside.

Our wood burner is our only source of heating (it can get rather chilly in here) but it gives me so much joy in the colder months.

Then there are the things we’ve bought - our superking bed and coffee machine make me very happy!

DustyMaiden · 18/06/2026 21:46

My freestanding bath . My summer house where I spend my afternoons painting. I’ve sold my house moving soon.

Saz12 · 18/06/2026 21:54

In a very unmumsnet comment - I absolutely love my (north-facing) conservatory! We use it like its the best patio ever, rather than suffer it as the worst living room ever.
