I've just seen a lovely thing that is not as common anymore

We have been on holiday to Tenerife. At the airport coming home there was a British family.
Mum, Dad and 3 children who looked between 10 and 14 and each one was reading a proper book.
No phones or tablets in sight.

Nor me. Plus what if you start a book and it’s crap? With the kindle you can move on!

Very true.

My husband is 80and his eyesight isn't great. He tends to have audio books now. I can only imagine the judgement.

measuretwicecutonce · 21/06/2026 14:56

Yea currently in Spain. Children at breakfast drawing and reading comics, only phones and iPads were adults

That's a nice rare sight.

The poster probably reads more on holiday, I know I do. Multiplying what I read on a week's holiday by 52 would not give you the correct figure for what I read in a year.

Yes, that's why I said pro-rata!

If most people-almost everyone-were to be on holiday or in solitary confinement- for 365 days of the year then they still wouldn't be able to read 1000 books a year.

I raise an eyebrow because to leave it unchallenged could very easily make many posters feel inadequate.

Still, the poster says that is her pro-rata rate and, although I find it incredible, I accept it.

It may be that she is reading short Mills and Boons, Mr Men or-slightly less likely-Persephone books or Victorian Literature.

Doesn’t need to be challenged - reading speeds just differ.

I’m also a very fast reader and have got to 1,000 books in a year (mainly to see if I could). It took a lot of the joy out of reading and not necessarily something I’d try again. But I can easily read 3 books a day around work - one on the commute there, one at lunchtime and one on the way back. Standard size books, not Mr Men!

It’s just one of those things. Doesn’t make faster readers better than slower readers and if anyone feels inadequate that’s their problem.

They probably couldn't afford a tablet or phone after paying the fine to take their kids out of school in term time.

...or left their chargers still plugged in at their hotel room. 🤣

I can't read books on screens. They don't feel real. I know they are, but I can't get on with it.

I can fuck about on MN and look stuff up but I love my paper books.

I'm dyslexic and my Kindle has made it so much easier for me to read because I can change the font.

I'm sorry you don't get on with them, they really are good.

Children do, what children see.

Are you in the Guinness book of world records?

Your claim seems very unlikely.

Don’t believe me then 🤷‍♀️

Although why the fuck I’d bother lying about that I don’t know.

The amount of books someone reads is hardly a value judgement.

MacDot · 23/06/2026 06:53

@AlcoholicAntibiotic I’m not as fast a reader as you but pre children I could easily read 3 books a day on holiday so I don’t know why people are so incredulous. It takes me about 2.5-3 hours to read an average sized novel. I’ve quite often read one before the rest of my family gets up for breakfast 😆.

On the rare occasions that I see a family with children reading books eg on the tube, I always comment on it and praise the parents.

Really? I take at least two - lightweight paperbacks that cost £1 at the charity shop.

Two lightweight paperbacks for a week! My dh reads two books a day every day, we know this because once a year Amazon send him an email with the number of books he’s downloaded on to his kindle. I downloaded seven for out last beach holiday and I had to cram myself in the corner of a restaurant to download more. I had taken some actual books as well.

How patronising.

Hallywally · 23/06/2026 12:33

I read books voraciously on the kindle app on my phone- k have kindle unlimited with Prime. I don’t think there’s anything morally better about reading physical books as opposed to on a device
