I've just seen a lovely thing that is not as common anymore

We have been on holiday to Tenerife. At the airport coming home there was a British family.
Mum, Dad and 3 children who looked between 10 and 14 and each one was reading a proper book.
No phones or tablets in sight.

Well, reading on an e-ink reader is proper reading too, although not as likely to delight passers-by.

Edited

Yeah, I read on my kindle because it means I have 500 (actually pretty unlimited so long as i can get internet) books at my fingertips

Bjorkdidit · 17/06/2026 11:33

Most 'readers' would get through more than 2 books in a week and trawling round charity shops/trying to get to the library during limited opening times isn't achievable for a lot of people.

Yeah, 2 books a week, while on holiday.... lol

Monty36 · 17/06/2026 13:10

Never could and still find it hard to read from a screen. Tried a kindle and not for me. A book is better. With pages you can turn. And go back to re read a paragraph easily if you need to. Love a book.

They probably couldn't afford a tablet or phone after paying the fine to take their kids out of school in term time.

Do you know the family?Do you know that they definitely go to school? This would be my family/ Grandkids ..all home educated...

Well that depends on the person. It’s enough for me because I actually read less on holiday as I’m generally busier every day. For someone lying on a sun lounger all week it wouldn’t be enough. Some prefer books and some prefer kindles 🤷🏻‍♀️

I've never done a sunlounger holiday in my life. Even on a busy sightseeing or a walking holiday, I will still read far more than two paper backs in a week, even if I'm only reading in cafes between things or in our accommodation first thing and last thing at night.

People really love to shit all over everything these days. I think it sounds nice OP!

DogMumToADogGirl · 17/06/2026 13:21

I can spend hours reading on my phone. I read the newspapers and articles of interest.
i also read my magazines and my books. Is the method by which I’m reading, the issue here?

Mustreadabook · 17/06/2026 13:25

Thebinisrightthere · 17/06/2026 11:29

None of these. 2 paperbacks don't weigh much ot take up much room, and can cost hardly anything if like me you get them from the charity shop or library

You only read 2 books on holiday? Its carrying 5 or 6 that means it takes up room

FrenchandSaunders · 17/06/2026 13:27

Very different from my airport experience in Tenerife ... a woman screaming at her DH "would you let your effing face know that you're on your holidays"😁

Livelaughlurgy · 17/06/2026 13:30

If you ever want to be a smug bitch about your parenting bring books somewhere. Any time I've brought the kids out and they have a short wait and we bring a book without exception someone will comment on it.

It's a good line, though! Grin

chevalraye · 17/06/2026 13:34

Yeah it’s weird to think reading a paper book is somehow superior to reading on a tablet. Do you also think writing a cheque makes you morally superior to using contactless?

JuniorMint14 · 17/06/2026 13:35

Agree that it's lovely. I remember noticing a similar thing a few years ago, a family out for brunch, all sitting reading books (after they had eaten so there was conversation time as well!). Personally I prefer a kindle nowadays for myself but still read actual books with my kids. As for needing more than 2 books on a holiday... I wish! I used to take dozens, but now I have two kids under 4 I'm lucky to get one book finished... One day!!

TheIdlerReturns · 17/06/2026 13:37

I hope you see me on the train then. I'll be reading a book too and may have left my smartphone at home. Even if it's with me, I refuse to get it out when I'm on the move. What a great thing to see.

Why? Why does it sound lovely?

I dont think it does, I think it sounds incredibly judgey. "Oh look, people reading books and therefore better than those using screens"

He'd be a good candidate for my 'shit DH bingo card' that I use to pass the time in airports.

Makes a change from all those who saunter ahead glued to their phones while their wives struggle on behind with a baby in a pushchair, toddler bolting off here there and everywhere, hand luggage and 4 passports/boarding cards.

Libraries in my area have Open Access when the library is unstaffed but still available to use by members so they're accessible around 12 or more hours a day

Our library has an app for taking out books, downloading and reading them and then you send them back…all through the app. Same for magazines and audiobooks. It’s great

you can easily re read a page on the Kindle. I will never go back to proper books

Screens are the work of the devil according to some. Weird, isn't it?

frozendaisy · 17/06/2026 13:45

tiramisugelato · 17/06/2026 11:35

Two paperbacks is nowhere near enough for a week though.

It is on a family holiday with 3 kids surely
And not all paperbacks are equal

FinallyHere · 17/06/2026 13:58

Yeah, few years ago my phone blew up the day before I was due to come home. I was grateful to pick up a few paperbacks from the hotel lobby to keep me busy on the way home

since it’s all three, I’m guessing there is some kind of punishment going on here rather than a ‘lashings of gingerbread’ situation. Sorry .

DreamingOfGeneHunt · 17/06/2026 14:02

I can't read books on screens. They don't feel real. I know they are, but I can't get on with it.

I can fuck about on MN and look stuff up but I love my paper books.

canuckup · 17/06/2026 14:03

Positivity is high on MN this morning I see

Theolittle · 17/06/2026 14:06

Last week I saw a 13/14 year old lad in his school
uniform walking home, so engrossed in his book that he bumped into some shrubbery and had to quickly duck. It’s the most endearing thing I’ve seen for ages!
