Please help! Hosting tonight and the hob isn’t working!

I’m having a few people over to watch the England match tonight. Last night I cooked a chilli and intended to heat it up and make the rice tonight. However, after cleaning the hob last night it will no longer turn on. None of the four rings will work. I can smell the gas, but there is no click to spark it.

What can I do? I’m at work till 5:30 and people are arriving at 6:30. The rice isn’t microwaveable packets, it’s uncooked rice that needs boiling in water.

Use matches or a lighter to light the gas. Then have fun with your friends!

493ruth · 17/06/2026 09:41

Use a match or lighter to light the ring?

Longtymelurker · 17/06/2026 09:41

You can light the burners with a match if the only problem is the spark not working.

whatthen · 17/06/2026 09:41

Is that safe? Everything I’ve read on google says absolutely not to do that because it’s so dangerous?

Could you get a slow cooker? You can cook rice in the microwave even if it's not prepacked

ArabellaWeird · 17/06/2026 09:42

Once upon a time there was no clicker, you had a box of matches in the drawer.

If you don't fancy the old fashioned route, then stick it in a casserole dish and put it in the oven.

I do have a slow cooker! It’s only little though. How do I do it in a microwave? Just put it in with water?

Just pop in to local supermarket and pick up some microwave rice packs. Quick and easy!

KnickerlessParsons · 17/06/2026 09:44

Heat it up in the oven. Or matches for the hob. And stop being such a wet blanket OP!!!😁

FinchiePink · 17/06/2026 09:45

Is it completely impossible for someone to go to a shop and pick up microwave rice on the way home or on their way to yours?

Even little corner shops usually have microwave rice.

not dangerous if you are careful. Use a long match, roll up your sleeves and stand back.

CointreauVersial · 17/06/2026 09:46

Use a match!! Back in the day, there WAS no clicker - that's how you lit a gas ring.

Light your match (or spark up the lighter), then turn the gas on, hold the flame just to the side of the burners and there you go. You won't blow the house up.

WonderingAndOverthinking · 17/06/2026 09:46

Just put the gas on the lowest setting and light it with a match.

MsPavlichenko · 17/06/2026 09:47

It’s not dangerous at all. Turn on the gas, then light the flame. Turn off in normal way.

Inmyuggs · 17/06/2026 09:48

My gas hob wouldbt start because they werent sitting aligned so try adjust them if they are removable kind?
Yes try the matches.

BadBones60 · 17/06/2026 09:48

I'd use a safety gas lighter rather than a match - should be able to get in a supermarket or hardware store

Lokilure · 17/06/2026 09:49

What's dangerous is letting the gas run and not setting light to it! We've had various hobs where the clicker doesn't work and we used matches.

Just ventilate it well before turning anything back on, so any gas you've let out so far is well dispersed and can't catch.

Google is wrong. It often is I find.

Matches perfectly safe.

This is what I thought it was initially but it’s all four and I’ve tried readjusting them. I think it must be moisture getting in from when I cleaned it.

Is your clicker battery operated? If you've not already done so check your manual and replace the battery, it might just be that.

ArabellaWeird · 17/06/2026 09:50

The "clicker" in the hob is just an automated little spark, which ignites the gas.

You just need to do that in a different way, it's not forbidden, you can do this. It would be dangerous to light a match or a lighter next to a gas leak, but that's not what is happening here.

Xiaoxiong · 17/06/2026 09:50

Not dangerous to use matches or a clicker unless you leave the gas on for hours and hours. Also check the clock is set (for some reason my cooker electrics won't work if the electricity goes off and the clock is flashing zero until I set the time on the clock again).

I’ve got the kitchen doors open to clear the gas and will try matches. If not then I’ll go to the corner shop for microwave rice.

Buy one of those long handled lighters, you might of got your clicker wet, it should work when it dries out. Perfectly safe to use a lighter or matches, long matches might be easier.
