Please help! Hosting tonight and the hob isn’t working!

I’m having a few people over to watch the England match tonight. Last night I cooked a chilli and intended to heat it up and make the rice tonight. However, after cleaning the hob last night it will no longer turn on. None of the four rings will work. I can smell the gas, but there is no click to spark it.

What can I do? I’m at work till 5:30 and people are arriving at 6:30. The rice isn’t microwaveable packets, it’s uncooked rice that needs boiling in water.

I’ve just looked and hobs were almost 100% fitted with fitted sparks by the 90s, so you’d have to be over 40 to stand a chance of remembering them lit with matches, more likely over 45.

25 year olds wouldn’t have been using hobs till, what? 2011? You’re missing 20 years of fitted sparks.

The age thing is bullshit, my child was born in the 2000s and can remember a clicker. also it’s simple science, there’s gas, you light it, that’s what your oven did automatically. Side note, I’ve had this and it was because there was water in my rings (I’d cleaned the oven too enthusiastically) and that also had tripped the switch in my fuse box so I had to restart. Although you may not know what a fuse box is either.

Is that safe? Everything I’ve read on google says absolutely not to do that because it’s so dangerous?

Out of interest what do you think the cooker does to light the gas ?

I think it's dangerous if you let the gas out for too long. A quick switch on with a match in the other hand shouldn't be so bad

Light them a while before your guests arrive as is there is moisture in there it may need a few minutes for it to evaporate, and until it does the hob may burn unevenly.

And no need to be so snotty to people trying to help you.

Is the ‘clicker’ electric, mine doesn’t light if it’s switched off at the wall.

The sparks are often the first thing to go while the hob is still fully functional. It happened to the hob in my previous house so I just used the matches. If you are nervous, get the long matches. Light the match first and hold it in one hand (close to a side of the burner) while turning the gas on slowly with the other hand.

My DM's hob hasnt had working clickers for ages. I keep telling her to just get a new hob. She can easily afford a new hob. But instead we have to get a separate firelighter clicker thing to light the hob.
OP I would stick it in a casserole dish in the oven, hob or no hob anyway, that way it will just keep warm and you don't have to keep an eye on it. Microwave rice is 1 cup rice to 1 1/2 cups water in a microwaveable lidded container, stick it on for 10 minutes. Or microwave jacket potatoes and send someone out for Nachos.

Yes, a clicker?

Listen, you’re not unreasonable to have asked this question or to have been a bit panicky about your stove, but the first person wasn’t being mean telling you to cop on, they included it with helpful advice, and it was just a friendly nudge to not catastrophise. Gently, you look a bit silly now calling a second person rude for pointing this out. Objectively It’s true that the only person being rude is you, telling people to fuck off. Please take this in the spirit it’s intended and Hope you sort the chilli!

Edited

just came back to this to see how the chilli turned out (yes saturday’s rockin, why do you ask), but i guess from the deleted reply to my comment i was the next person to get told to eff off!

nowt so queer as folk 😂
