Price rises which have shocked you recently

Shopping at the weekend and picked up this, for a salad.
Was actually shocked at the price, I'm sure the last time I bought it, it was half that.

What items do you regularly buy which have shockingly inflated prices?

I buy Bisto best onion gravy granules, because it happens to be gluten free (for me) & suitable for the rest of the family too. I haven't bought any in a while & it was £4.30 a jar in Tesco today! I've told the kids I won't be buying it again, so now I have to look for an acceptable alternative....

Hi @ImpracticalMagic, Coeliac here.

I use the Knorr stock cubes and stock pots, often marked gluten free. 😊

Shhhhitsmagic · 15/06/2026 21:05

whirlyhead · 15/06/2026 21:09

I just paid 7 € for a mango…

Jesus wept! I remember that being half that price not that long ago!

RockyBirdy · 15/06/2026 21:43

Definitely lamb for me. Whilst never cheap, I could usually find a leg for around £20 to £25 if frozen. That would be a fantastic Sunday Roast, followed by a nice curry mid week, with a couple of pitas stuffed with lamb, salad and feta. Depending how greedy we'd been, there was usually enough to make a nice scotch broth using the bone.

Suddenly it's £38!

Even Lamb chops work out expensive for a family of 5.

DaisyDukesAuntie · 15/06/2026 21:43

Tin foil!

itwasyourshowallalong · 15/06/2026 21:47

Baby corn

was 99p, now £1.50

which is shit because it’s only 1 of 2 veg DS2 will actually eat Sad

MetalliCat89 · 15/06/2026 21:52

Everything has shot up! I watch the pennies so (supposedly) the pounds look after themselves but there is hardly anything under £1 these days! I have a good job and live in a rental with my husband and 6yo son and towards the end of the month we are still scraping by. I appreciate this is better than some so I count my blessings but some days it's so hard to come to terms with the amount that reasonably healthy food costs these days.

IbizaToTheNorfolkBroads · 15/06/2026 21:53

Yes, smoked mackerel ! I used to buy it regularly, but not anymore.

I just refused to pay £1.45 for a cucumber. It was CoOp but still.

Gilltthepill · 15/06/2026 21:59

Yes, mackerel used to be cheap.

Food will keep getting more expensive. Time to get savvy with nutrition. I've been buying for need lately, not entertainment. Sad but TBF it's healthier! So, own-brand cornflakes with no sugar, for all the vitamins and minerals (literally, 100% of your RDA! If you eat as much cereal as me..) and plan 3 favourite meals and rotate them. Plus staples like potatoes obviously... And buy in bulk / switch to frozen for veg / fish etc. No wasted food, and lots of tinned stuff like tuna.

This won't get better so it just needs planning and the fat trimming, as it were!

BeardySchnauzer · 15/06/2026 22:13

Yes - eating what’s in season and what there’s an abundance of. There will be other fish that is cheaper.

i do think a reset is starting to happen as our food prices have been depressed for a long time and global factors are going to increase them.

the big issue is wage growth but that’s a different conversation!!

EasternStandard · 15/06/2026 22:29

Fair op I don’t recall mackerel being that much.

Happyjoe · 15/06/2026 22:33

YoBetty · 15/06/2026 18:03

There is a severe shortage of mackerel, that's why. Something to do with fish stocks being very low, so they aren't catching them at the moment. So what little there is will sell at a very high price. Have kippers instead, they are still cheap.

Same with sardines. That's why no tins of sardines in tomato at the moment.

Edited

It was such a cheap staple when I was a kid - my mum bought a leg of lamb for the six of us frequently, as a cheap option. I flipping hated it too!

coronafiona · 15/06/2026 22:42

Diet Coke. I don’t buy it any more.

At least I get a break on that! I have a small mango tree in the yard. About 50 a year.

Agree - insane. I buy BB on Amazon now, because they’re a much more reasonable £3 on there and I get free delivery with Prime.

FoxandDuck · 16/06/2026 06:27

DH has largely ignored my muttering about food price rises other than to comment on the size of the credit card bill each month but he went to the supermarket the other day and was getting mackerel & a leg of lamb and wanted to get a token box of chocolates as a “thank you” for someone and came back shocked.
Maltesers are a thing for me. If everyone else was out, DS and I would have a movie and a box of maltesers of a weekend evening. We did this from
when he was little and he always thought it was so grown up. We’re not doing the maltesers any more!

ginislife · 16/06/2026 07:01

Fish & chips last night. Used to be about £5 for mini fish, chips & peas for a long time. Last night £8.60 each.

Trainstrike · 16/06/2026 07:06

We don't really go out for food or have takeaways but we were out at a strange time the other night so were going to call in KFC for the first time in 5 or 6 years. I couldn't believe the adult box meals were £11 and the kids were £5 - it would've been cheaper for us to call in the local pub with the deals they have on. I actually waited til I got home to eat in the end because I was so shocked!

Sunshineandrainbow · 16/06/2026 07:09

I love that mackerel but haven't bought it since Waitrose took a stand because of over fishing. Yes the price has jumped

Waitrose salad cream used to be £1.10 and is now £1.90!!!!!

ViciousCurrentBun · 16/06/2026 07:09

@TulipsMakeMeHappy not sure what you wanted your wood for but there is always repurposing. We had a small shed that needed dismantling a few years ago. It got changed in to a raised vegetable box. I need a small but very sturdy table, we may pick up an old table on the free cycle site and take apart and rebuild.

Globules · 16/06/2026 07:12

5 fake snickers used to be 69p in Aldi. They're now £1.49.

OvernightBloats · 16/06/2026 07:15

A packet of mixed peppers - didn't seem that long ago they were £1, now they are around about £1.70. Started buying frozen peppers much more.

Corned beef used to be a cheap option. Not any more!
