Price rises which have shocked you recently

Shopping at the weekend and picked up this, for a salad.
Was actually shocked at the price, I'm sure the last time I bought it, it was half that.

What items do you regularly buy which have shockingly inflated prices?

Wow that is a bonkers price, in my local supermarket, not UK, it's 1.65 EUR for a tin and 4 EUR for a 220 gr packet like yours.

I had to check just now because I think of Mackerel as being cheap.

Ginmonkeyagain · 15/06/2026 16:45

Mackerel is a bit of a special case - stocks in the Atlantic have declined a lot recently while demand has soared.

ImpracticalMagic · 15/06/2026 16:48

I buy Bisto best onion gravy granules, because it happens to be gluten free (for me) & suitable for the rest of the family too. I haven't bought any in a while & it was £4.30 a jar in Tesco today! I've told the kids I won't be buying it again, so now I have to look for an acceptable alternative....

FridgeJenga · 15/06/2026 16:54

@CeciliaMars There isn't one locally, I'd have to drive two towns over which would probably cancel out any savings.

@Ginmonkeyagain That probably explains it, thanks.

@ImpracticalMagic you are brave admitting to using gravy granules on MN!😉

@mumofoneAloneandwell it certainly feels like it!

Someone has to go to sea, catch and clean it and it goes to auction. Fuel prices are high and are there that many people fishing now or is it sourced abroad and packed shipped again?
Days of cheap food have gone.

I wasn't making a moral judgement or complaining - just answering the OP's question.

I have heard that Waitrose stopped stocking mackerel to protect it.

latetothefisting · 15/06/2026 17:12

maltesers! the small 110g box was £1 for years, it's now about £3, and even 'on offer' is never less than £2. A 200% price increase in, what, 3 years is wild! And I love maltesers 😒

GasPanic · 15/06/2026 17:12

Does that label have taste the difference in the top left hand corner ?

That always is the most expensive stuff.

AImportantMermaid · 15/06/2026 17:19

Heinz ketchup is almost £4 for a 700g bottle.

If you want tomatoes that actually taste of something you’re looking at almost £3 a punnet.

Mushrooms - were reliably under £1. Now they’re £1.40.

OhBotherSaidPoo · 15/06/2026 17:24

99p for a cucumber in summer is taking the piss

WarriorN · 15/06/2026 17:32

6 Kiwis have been £1 for ages in Sainsbury’s. Around 2-3 years iirc.

Suddenly 1.40

WarriorN · 15/06/2026 17:32

Arlanymor · 15/06/2026 16:57

though cans of sardines are still 60p in Sainsbury’s.

WarriorN · 15/06/2026 17:33

Basa fish is still relatively low.

canned mackerel is more than double canned sardines

TulipsMakeMeHappy · 15/06/2026 17:33

Not food, but I went to buy some timber lengths a couple of weeks ago. Admittedly they are from a "proper" independent timber merchants (cut their own timber and preserve it), but literally twice the price they were 5 years ago. Unfortunately that meant I ended up buying cheap rubbish from a warehouse which won't last as long but I will cross that bridge when I come to it! Sad though, as I like to give business to independent stores, but sometimes it is hard to justify the difference in price (to myself - I know their costs have all gone up!)

WarriorN · 15/06/2026 17:35

Timber went bonkers after the Ukraine war started.

We actually ended up moving house rather than do the loft conversion we’d planned to as prices became so astronomical

They were 50p last month

YoBetty · 15/06/2026 18:03

There is a severe shortage of mackerel, that's why. Something to do with fish stocks being very low, so they aren't catching them at the moment. So what little there is will sell at a very high price. Have kippers instead, they are still cheap.

Meadowfinch · 15/06/2026 18:07

I had family over for Sunday lunch recently. I nearly fainted when the butcher gave me the bill for a leg of lamb. HOW MUCH ??!?

And good quality chocolate .

Grow your own tomatoes. £1 a plant, a couple of gro-bags and a bottle of tomato fertiliser will give you flavoursome tomatoes from June - November for about £15.
