If you had a barky dog triggered by cars/people/animals going past...

...would you allow it to sit in the window bottom, knowing it barks every ten to twenty minutes all day everyday and you have neighbours either side? I can't understand why my neighbours do this and make my life hellish.

They should take it to a specialised dog trainer. 🙂

parachutegirl · 14/06/2026 18:22

No, I wouldn’t. I’d put some kind of window covering on the lower part of the window so the twatting dog couldn’t see anyone going past.

Chefpig · 14/06/2026 18:25

My neighbours know the dog barking pisses me off so much but they dont remove its access to the window. I'm failing to understand why. Are they just thick or maybe lazy?

I suggested this to one of them after another full day of barking. I wonder if they'll take note.

But this is their precious fur baby and can do nothing wrong ..... how dare you suggest it is less than perfect!

Then I'd suggest it again !

We have a very vocal dog, he loves to look out the front window and bark at anything going past. Other dogs or cats are his absolute favourite.

Fuck me, it does my head in, we've put shutters up at the windows so he can't see out! I'd be utterly mortified if he was disturbing our neighbours, as soon as he starts barking outside, he comes back in again.

frozendaisy · 14/06/2026 18:44

Oh come on @Chefpig
There are more dogs than children now
Owners don’t bother training them you are supposed to accommodate their fur babies because dogs have human emotions now don’t you know.

Don’t repress choices they are emotional fur cushions not domesticated animals which need training and accommodations

Dogs that bark all day are not trained, happy or having a good life their needs are neglected and barking is all they have to display discomfort.

Ahh youre such a lovely neighbour. I'd appreciate living next door to you because youre proactive in managing the barking, unlike my arsehole neighbours!

No, which is why we have closed blinds on our windows.

HappiestSleeping · 14/06/2026 18:46

@Chefpig don't bother telling them about a trainer because it distressed you, tell them they need a trainer as they obviously don't care about their dog as they are letting it get so stressed.

Cleocaterpillar · 14/06/2026 18:46

I've never understood this either. I clean a house that has floor to ceiling windows on one side and custom wooden blinds that fold out to the sides. The dog sits in the window and barks all bloody day at everything. Busy main road so lots to bark at.

The owner is up in his office on the 4th floor with noise cancelling headphones on giving no fucks whatsoever. Both sets of neighbours have complained and one even pleaded with me to have a word with him. I just cannot wrap my head around the selfishness.

Chefpig · 16/06/2026 07:21

Its so stressful! The dog was sat in the window yesterday barking at anything that goes past and then barks when not in the window too. I really am about to lose my rag at them for being so bloody stupid as to allow it to sit in the window when thats one of its trigger points. I really hate my neighbours.

Lose your rag.
I did recently, lived in a lovely peaceful street until new neighbours moved in 2 doors down.
Huge reactive husky type dog. Barks at every single car coming and going, barks when it hears me in the garden, barks at fucking everything. Starts at 6am when my other neighbour goes to work but they don't get up to let him out for the toilet until 8am, as soon as they let him out the barking starts, and it is LOUD. Anyway I lost my shit a couple of weeks ago and shouted over the fence to put the fucking dog inside instead of just letting it standing there barking it's head off, they actually stand there saying sshh in a really gentle voice whilst the dog just barks in their face, they are the most incompetent dog owners I've came across.
Has worked to the extent they do at least now take it inside when it starts.
Pisses me off no end that other people's choices have such a negative effect on their neighbours because they can't be bothered to train their bloody dogs.
You can report to the council if it doesn't improve. Barking dogs are a noise nuisance, it's antisocial behaviour to allow you dog to bark all day like that.
I feel your pain.

Lemonade2011 · 16/06/2026 08:38

We have a retriever who loved to bark at things out of the window we live opposite a park so he can see everything. Well he could before we made sure (by covering those windows) that he can’t practise that behaviour day in and day out, he’s big and he’s loud and it would drive us mad never mind neighbours.

Mischance · 16/06/2026 08:42

Imagine living in darkness from closed blinds/curtains/shutters just to accommodate a blessed dog! World's gone mad!
There are just too many dogs.

Ineedanewsofa · 16/06/2026 08:44

Are they home? How is it not doing their heads in?! If our dog barks she gets moved to somewhere she can’t see out (or I close the curtains!) couldn’t WFH with constant barking

I've heard that if i shout (which i was doing at one point I was so frustrated having sleep nd work interrupted and all of my weekends), I could get in trouble for harassment. I'm not sure if that's true. I don't want to rock the boat with the council as I've logged the anti social behaviour with them.

Theyre home almost all the time. When they do go out, the dog might bark the first few minutes they leave but after that its very chilled. I wish they'd go out all day, everyday day.

I wonder if you live next to a house that I pass on my way to work. They have a little dog that I suspect they leave alone. The dog sits on the back of a sofa and barks at everyone going past. It is on a busy route so there are always people passinf. The poor neighbours - I know one has returned to the office because of it.

Periperi2025 · 16/06/2026 15:29

My dogs windowsill barking has much improved since he jumped up when a parcel was being delivered catching the curtain, ripped the curtain pole off the wall, got smacked by the curtain pole and then entangled within the curtain down the back or the sofa.

Life has been so much quieter since, maybe recommend this as a training method!!

Dozycuntlaters · 16/06/2026 15:39

My girl does this. She likes to sit on my sons bed and look out the bay window and she will bark if someone she doesn't like the look of goes by, another dog, a cat, a leaf, a bit of air!! I make her come out and shut the door so she cant get back in there. It gets on my tits and I love her to bits, no way would I inflict that on anyone else.

henlake7 · 16/06/2026 16:58

How does it not drive them nuts? I cant stand OTT dog behaviour (barking, jumping up, etc).
I put opaque window film on my downstairs windows so they cant see all the barkable offenses!

Chefpig · 16/06/2026 17:11

Im about to submit my logs to the council and I've mentioned about the thick as pigshit neighbours allowing the dog to sit in the window and bark at its triggers so hopefully they will tell the neighbours to remove access to the window. I just hope the council can help.

My neighbour's dog does this too but fortunately we are at the end of a cul de sac so not many people walk past and it makes a fairly half hearted attempt and then stops.

However the idiots in the other side have recently got a dog and put it in the conservatory at night. Where it goes mad if it sees foxes or cats. At 3am or similar. It goes on and on and on. One of my neighbours had a word with them and it did get a bit better. At first I thought they were working a night shift and leaving it in the garden. Goodness knows how they sleep through it.
