Has anyone got a hack for unknotting a necklace?

DP gave me a necklace for my birthday, it's quite a delicate chain and it's got all knotted up. I'm a bit heavy handed and can't unpick it. Does anyone have a hack? I'm worried he thinks I'm not wearing it because I don't like it!

Have you tried rolling it between your fingers to loosen it up, use fairy liquid or baby oil too.

Pins

Rolling it between your fingers works for me

Patience and tweezers! Slowly push the two strands together until there's a tiny gap, grab one side with the tweezers and slowly ease them apart.

Lay it flat. Holding it up tightens the tangle.

Very gently tap the tangles with something pointy, like a pencil. Keep tapping. They'll start to loosen. Gently pull the tangles apart. Keep the whole thing lying flat as much as possible.

My first job was in a jewellers.

Use two toothpicks like in this video - I recently unpicked two necklaces and omg it’s sooo satisfying when all the knots come loose Star

Lay it down on a table. Get a pin and put it in a part of the necklace (just straight down through it, onto the table,) and gently shake. It will unknot. It takes patience and be very gentle

I'm always getting knots in the delicate silver chains of my pendants. I use a pair of tweezers to unknot them. It's fiddly and takes patience but is always successful.

Needles. And a really good light! I love unpicking necklaces. Used to be my special job to get donated chains ready for a charity shop.

Spotlight, glasses or magnifying glass, and pins as already said.

drammmalllammma · 14/06/2026 03:15

Washing up liquid and gentle finger rolling.

Toddlerteaplease · 14/06/2026 03:48

Take it to a jewellers and ask them to do it!

Sunnysidegold · 14/06/2026 07:42

I used two pins with the necklace flat on the table. You can take bits down if they get in the way. I found talc was good on it rather than something oily.

If it's really bad I'd nip into my jewellers.

Manon10 · 14/06/2026 08:35

I lay the necklace flat and use two needles, under my magnifying sewing lamp

TofuTuesday · 14/06/2026 08:39

Same as everyone else with pins . I love doing this, it’s so calming.

AllotmentTime · 14/06/2026 09:33

Post it to me and I'll do it!! I love that kind of thing, it's like meditation for your hands.

If it's really bad, have some other objects to wedge in the gaps as you create them. So that you don't pull one knot tight while loosening another elsewhere iyswim. Anything will do - clothes peg, pencil, rolled up tissue.

clary · 14/06/2026 09:37

Ah yes send it to me! That's if @AllotmentTime can't manage it 😍

I love to untangle things. It’s my major talent tbh. I was at an athletics event the other week and an athlete had his spike laces in such a knot, with a 1-min deadline to sort it. Luckily I was able to do it, so satisfying.

But yes, as others say, use pins, use a flashlight to get a good look, move the chain gently to loosen the tight bits, one at a time.

IDontNeedYourShit · 14/06/2026 09:52

Lie it down and use 2 needles/pins to gently pull the knotted areas apart, eventually you will have loose chain and be able to unloop it to straighten it out

AllotmentTime · 14/06/2026 10:06

@claryit should be a sport we could compete at 😆

Glittertwins · 14/06/2026 10:07

This is what I do too @IDontNeedYourShit

GETTINGLIKEMYMOTHER · 14/06/2026 11:35

A thin knitting needle, if you have such a thing.

TheNinjaWife · 14/06/2026 12:06

Water, I found this the easiest. Just untangle in a sink.

lilaccamille · 14/06/2026 12:10

Flour
then pins

SardinesOnButteredToast · 14/06/2026 12:20

Vegetable oil and two sewing needles, and endless patience. Put on a podcast to distract you through the frustration and potential rage. You'll get there.

Heartbroken38 · 14/06/2026 12:22

Put on a flat surface and dust with baby powder. Then try using your fingers or two pencils to separate the strands so you can see where the knots are
