If you had 100k inheritance, that you wanted to invest in a holiday home abroad, at least two bedrooms

Where would you look ? Ideally two bedroom, a balcony or sit our space and a sandy beach

LlynTegid · 13/06/2026 18:50

I would not be looking. I don't want to deny a local a home, who could be a key worker such as someone in the local hospital. If I needed medical attention when on holiday, I would like it as soon as possible.

In any case, 100k would get you a lot of holidays, say 20 or 30.

DidntLikeTheEnding · 13/06/2026 18:50

Think how many nights in hotels you could get for 100k and save yourself the hassle of buying another house!

ItsOnlyHobnobs · 13/06/2026 18:55

It wouldn’t appeal to me.

I could understand more if you had a connection with a location, being your home nation or a place that makes you feel at home. We can’t tell you where that is, and if you can’t think of anywhere then does it really make sense to you?

Basic logistics, do you have a EU passport?

WhereverIlaymycatthatsmyhome · 13/06/2026 18:57

I love my holidays but have no interest in a holiday home. I would spend the money differently.

mintleavesandthyme · 13/06/2026 18:58

I wouldn’t. I’d invest it on the stock market and use the dividends to book an air BnB when I wanted it.

How much time are you planning on spending in it?

I was watching A Place in the Sun thinking exactly this today. A couple were looking at a small flat on the Aigarve for £150k. I would much rather go on frequent holidays than buy a flat.

Okdokeyartichoke · 13/06/2026 19:03

I’d work out where I can fly to easily from my local airport and then start looking at those places.

Examtime · 13/06/2026 19:03

To answer your question, a cheaper but still
popular coastal area of Spain such as Alicante, or rural France. Be conscious of sales fees and taxes though which can add another 10-20% ish to the sales price, depending on where you are buying.

Examtime · 13/06/2026 19:05

I have a place in Spain, btw. I use it 2-3 times a year and the rest of the year I rent it out so it covers its costs as well as paying for another 2-3 holidays elsewhere if I want to take them.

SalmonOnFinnCrisp · 13/06/2026 19:06

Prob bulgaria but honestly I stayed.in a 5 star all inci sunny beach with.my dh and 2 kids and it was under 2k with flights inc.

100k invested would get you about 8k pa interest which would buy 2 x 14 day hols with change (flights were £700) and no maintenance, utilities, furniture, food, etc to consider

purpledagger · 13/06/2026 19:17

Agree, it doesn’t appeal to me either, but if i had the money, it would have to be France for practical reasons

i would want to be somewhere with nice weather, hot, but not too hot. if the property is small, it allows you to spend more time outdoors.

id love to have access to a swimming pool, but nice countryside for walks and opportunity to visit local towns for lunch and a bit of shopping.

location is important to be able to commute to in a reasonable time (i live in the south east, so could get a ferry or euro tunnel to France).

ForBusyOliveBear · 13/06/2026 22:54

Costa Blanca.

TheGingerCatsWhiskas · 14/06/2026 00:25

Yes I have an eu passport as well as uk one,
I getbwhatbyournsaying about you and have alot of holidays from that, but I want to invest it in something that will still be here when I'm not, something that can be passed down
Places I like italy
Barcelona area anywhere around an hour from there would be good
Palma
Cyprus

I know nothing about the taxes etc though so I'd need to find out and I realise 100k is a v v small budget

Do you rent out on air b and b ?
That sounds a good idea

Seems to be a bit impossible to find somewhere on that budget

OP posts:
IndigoBluey · 14/06/2026 02:20

I think most posters have read the OP’s question wrong. “… that you wanted to invest in a holiday home …” wanted being the operable word. Sure, we all have different views as to how best to invest or spend money but that’s not what the OP is asking. Personally I’d go for anywhere along the coast near Cartagena

Beekman · 14/06/2026 02:26

Your budget rules out pretty much anywhere other than Eastern Europe and I would not invest there for many reasons, low-level corruption being one. Invest it and go on lots of holidays, OP

Figgygal · 14/06/2026 02:28

Ridiculously I don't think you'll get much for that budget today
I'm with others but somewhere you feel connected to but even the interest on that kind of money buys a lot of trips in lots of places - without frittering it away

Mumtobabyhavoc · 14/06/2026 03:12

Croatia.

sohard · 14/06/2026 03:33

I wouldn’t. My folks had a holiday home abroad and it was a constant source of stress and expense for them.

Chickadee26 · 14/06/2026 04:08

Sorry OP, I agree you would have a lot of trouble to buy anything decent.

It would be a good deposit on a better house if you wanted to pay a mortgage though.
