Keeping a UK Council property for life even though you no longer live in the UK

This story has just been released
https://www.bbc.co.uk/news/articles/clyxkeny8x6o
It seems so unfair given the lack of social housing in the uk that the First Lady of Sierra Leone expected to be allowed to keep her London social housing property as a pied a terre. Surely we cannot be expected to house the world. No one in authority would have realised given that she was still paying the rent if she hadn’t boasted about keeping it on a radio interview. I wonder how many people keep and sublet uk council properties when they no longer have a right to keep it.

Probably wrong but my daughter has one and we intend on keeping it in the family cone hell or high water even though her household income is now a far cry from when she got it as a single mum at 20

If she ever bought with her husband -which is likely- and moved on she would succede the tenancy to one of her brothers first and them the same and so on I used to work in social housing and stock is like hens teeth around here so we are hanging onto it for the family no matter what.

In a previous response to your post I forgot to add that it is often reported that people, whatever age and sometimes even vulnerable and/or disabled, who still live with their parents in council/social properties are given very short notice to leave once both parents are deceased! 😡
From what's being said in some other posts this seems to vary a little from place to place but none have said that it's possible to keep on passing a property on ad infinitum and 'in the family' as you seem to be hoping to do! 😥

Yep, 2 weeks. There are countless news articles in local papers about it.
I don't live with my DM, but she is in a council house. When she goes, I will have 2 weeks to clear her house out. I am disabled and do not live nearby.
Since my DF died, she had been having a major declutter.

I doubt it more likely she's a Labour MP

Personally I'd like to see the stats on exactly who has social housing. I imagine it would show that immigrants do indeed have rather more than their proportional share of 'all the housing' where social housing is concerned.

Edited to say: sorry that quote didn't quite work. I was responding to the person who said 'she's probably a Reform voter complaining about immigrants taking all the housing.'

Renting out an English property whilst living in Spain doesn’t equal using NHS services since they are living in Spain.

Some don’t register in Spain ,don’t inform DWP,HMRC, and nip back and forwards to the U.K. for NHS care they’re no longer entitled to.

tipsyraven · 13/06/2026 20:08

Where is ‘here’? I’m London based and this is not the case in my borough.

In West London, social housing rents seem to be half private rents.

Yes I’m aware some do. However, the post wasn’t about that

How do they manage that? They can only stay in Spain for 90 days since Brexit. If they pay tax in the UK they’re entitled to use the NHS.

And she’s probably a Reform voter banging on about how immigrants are taking all the housing…

I must admit, I thought that when I saw her post!

Trillie · 13/06/2026 21:47

Well don’t guess, presumably you’ve got some basis for this assertion so link us to it.

StarCurator · 13/06/2026 22:03

Naughty? What a childish word to use. It's unethical and corrupt, and shows that your daughter and your family are utterly selfish grifters who care nothing for the wider community. You almost seem proud of your attitude. Incredible.

StarCurator · 13/06/2026 22:05

Absolutely. Extraordinarily selfish attitude.

How about people who have been given leave to remain. Are given Social Housing. Never live in the house.
And get full Housing Benefit.

Then sub let it to one or more of their friends who are here illegally, or overstayers on short term ,low skill work or student visas.
Or use the place as a business address to run a fake or dodgy business. Think pop up Vape shops and short lived take aways.

Before l am flamed for being racist. I can testify that this does actually happen where l live. On a regular basis.

Or alternatively they use the flat as an unofficial Airbnb for overseas visitors from their country of origin. They also take long holidays, over a year and more in their country of origin.

You know the country where it was so dangerous to live in.
They had to flee for their lives

When Housing Associations are told about these practises by other genuine tenants.. They will say that the tenant in question is doing nothing wrong.

This means they couldn't care less because the rent is being paid. And that is all that matters and they care about.

You can always check with the electoral register to see who is supposed to be living at a certain address.

I have lived on my particular small HA estate for nearly 40 years..And believe me. I have seen many instances of these sort of activities.

Yep I know plenty of people doing exactly this

there is a huge refurbishment of a block of council flats near and my cousin works for one of the company’s doing the work

the amount of time they have to rearrange appointments because the Tennant isn’t actually there

they go in and it clear there is more than 1 -2 person living in the house multiple beds damp everywhere. Keysafe outside a big majority of them can’t even speak enough English to understand what is being done

that’s before you get on to the ones that won’t let them in cos they got a weed grow on 😂

I thought you could only hand the tenancy down once? It's certainly the case where I live.

BooneyBeautiful · 13/06/2026 22:41

This is why I have the very unpopular opinion that council tenancies should be 5 years in length and every renewal that comes up you have to re-apply and be checked that you are still entitled to live there. Maximum of 3 tenancy periods per person.

I think in my area now you only get a tenancy for a limited period of time and then it's reviewed to make sure you still qualify. So, for example, when your children leave home and you have a surplus of bedrooms, you are then offered another property that's more appropriate for your circumstances.

The issue with a lot of areas is that there is a real shortage of smaller properties to move them on from family houses.

In my area, it isn't reviewed but people in bigger properties with children who have now moved out are given priority banding when moving somewhere smaller.

Sickening isn't it

And the poster seems so proud as well

So selfish, I can't believe you think this is ok. No wonder social housing is like "hen's teeth" when people like you have this attitude.

Spiteful, much?

ETA there seems to be no indication she was subletting, fairly sure that would have come up in news reports if so.

Just out of interest why is wishing families in hostels should get council homes over people who live overseas?

Clearly, I was referring to your intention to “lay a bet” that she was subletting, based on sweet FA.

HTH.

That is why they are called Social housing. For people in need and on low wages.

I think private rents should be capped. Landlords shouldn't be allowed to raise rents more than once every 3 years or so, and no more than the rate of inflation.

Then your tenancy would be renewed.

Cant see anything wrong with this line of thinking

It would also mean that if you won the lottery and could afford a mansion then your lease wouldn’t be renewed and the house would be passed to someone else

The problem with council housing is that it isn’t just for life but for life and the lives of every family member it is handed to whether they truly need it for life or not

That would mean that there would be even less private rentals around
