Best Ryanair large cabin bag that’s NOT a suitcase?

Last summer I booked flights for a trip I’m going on in a month or so, believing that I would travel hand luggage only (🙈). Having now done a hand luggage only trip, I will not be doing that.

It means I’ve now got a checked in suitcase and a large cabin bag that I’ve paid for. I’m obviously going to use it, because it cost me money.

The thing is, I’m a bit stuck for what bag to take. I was going to take a tote, but I’m not keen on turning it to the side to size it up. My cabin bag is a Katie Loxton cabin bag that fits the dimensions perfectly.

I really don’t know what to take! I was thinking a backpack, but I’m not sure where I’d get one that fits those dimensions, but also works for day to day life.

I did consider my longchamp le pliage large tote, but again I’m not sure!

I always use a large rucksack, like the sort you’d take trekking. I can’t tell you how many litres, maybe 70? So much easier than a suitcase or a tote as the weight is well balanced and you don’t get stuck on stairs, especially going through train or metro stations on the other end.

I suggest a backpack would be a good idea. You can take enough clothes for the first day in case your luggage does not arrive with you.

Decorhate · 11/06/2026 19:26

Why can't you take the bag you usually use as a cabin bag? If it's to do with not wanting to carry it, how about a small duffel bag type with a sleeve that you can slide over the handle of your suitcase?

I have a cabin bag, I need a large bag. I’ve got all three - a cabin bag, large cabin bag and a suitcase.

I’ve seen this Monty tote that I really like, but £50 for a normal tote bag feels extortionate!

Just buy the large holdalls that are advertised with the dimensions matching the airlines, they’re all over Amazon, B&m and the like. Nowhere near £50.

Overall it’s weird to buy a bag to bring things you don’t need in addition to the other luggage because “you’ve already paid for it”. Sunken fallacy comes to mind.

Surely if you have got a checked in bag it is easier just to take a small cabin bag? Why faff around with a larger bag? The money is spent, forget about it.

I’ve spent the money on it. I’m not going to waste money!

Oh I’ll be able to fill it no problem 🤣 on the way out I plan on doing a boots click and collect order so I’ll need to put my toiletries etc in it and on the way back I’ll probably do all my shopping from the trip in it! Plus in the middle of the trip I change country, so I’ll take all the food etc from my first apartment to the second

Lots of people, myself included, have the need for larger bags to take in the cabin. Even using the largest bag they will allow, I struggle to fit in the items I need in my hand luggage.

Sidebeforeself · 12/06/2026 13:32

Im struggling to understand what you mean. So you’ve paid for 3 pieces of luggage..1 to go in the hold , 1 small bag like a handbag that presumably goes under your seat, and now you need a larger bag to go in the overhead locker ? Is that right?

Sidebeforeself · 12/06/2026 13:33

Have a look at The Foldie bag. I know it’s all over Insta but I have literally travelled around the world with mine and its excellent.

Whyherewego · 12/06/2026 13:34

Eastpack Travel pack is great. Perfect size, backpack.

perlan · 12/06/2026 13:37

I used to use a backpack, I now use a large tote BUT it has a long strap aswell as carry handles. That means I can sling it cross body and the side pockets are easy access for passport and all that stuff you need. It's one I got on Amazon (I'm not a labels person 😊), and it's miles better than a backpack, which I continually had to take on and off to get stuff out of!

OK, you need a bag that will go over the handles of your big case, then you can use a backpack for your underseat. I have this one and it holds loads and will fit nicely in the overhead.

Then take a rucksack!
or a wheelie cabin case if you can manage to wheel two through an airport (if they’ve got 4 wheels it’s not too hard)

Why not use that then? You will fall over yourself trying to wheel a big case, an overhead size wheelie and a backpack. But if it's an overhead wheelie you want, just google FGS. There are millions of them! Best get spinners for both cases to make it a little easier to move them around. Off you go, you're a big girl now!

I really don’t think it’s hard to understand.

I have three bags I can use:

A hold suitcase

A large cabin bag

An underseat bag.

I’m asking for recommendations for the large cabin bag as everything I am finding online is either a suitcase (I don’t really want to take a second case, but can if needs be), or a small underseat backpack.

It looks like it's very hard for YOU to figure out though obviously! Never came across such mullarkey over a cabin bag. Choose a wheeled, duffel, soft side, cabin size backpack. Do the legwork with google, there's not much else coming from the thread, except bewilderment about your need for three bags, and your inability to choose a cabin bag for yourself!

I suppose the way I'm looking at it, you don't NEED a full size cabin overhead bag and that's why I linked the bag I did. Then use a smaller one aswell, as an underseat bag. So you have a medium size overhead (like the one I linked above), a smaller underseat bag, and a checked suitcase. That's all your baggage charges used up as you wanted to!

You've had plenty of suggestions and tips so make a decision!!.
