How hated will we be?

DH and I are looking at buying a second home by the coast. I would love to hear from other second home owners and people who live in areas where there are lots of second home owners. How hated by the locals would we be? Do neighbours ignore you etc?

Differing perspective I live in a holiday area and our direct neighbours are a holiday home, I love it as the house is empty most of the time so we have very quiet neighbours, they are hardly here and it suits me, I’m very nice when they are here as they are hardly here at all.

This thread has made me realise that there is more hostility than I thought to incomers. Can people list places they have been welcomed and those that they have not ? I heard Porlock was not a friendly place to relocate to.

Second home - Oxford, fine 🤣

Hardly. I haven't said where it is or how much it is for this reason.

Clearly, people care as there has been engagement from people who live near second home owners. I'd still like to hear from second home owners themselves.

If you don't care, why did you comment.

OP, it's clear from your posts that you don't care about the impact your decision will have on the locals.

This attitude guarantees they'll hate you. I entered this thread thinking you were a bit clueless but overall not so bad, but I've found myself disliking you more and more with each reply. The people around you will probably be just as put off by your attitude, except they'll be personally affected by it, so feelings will run stronger.

The locals probably will give you a wide berth and you might get some dirty looks. People will feel compelled to be polite to you, but they won't like you much and will bitch about you behind your back. They might even stage the odd protest in town that makes you feel guilty under scrutiny. But they're not going to burn your house down or beat you up.

The real question isn't "How bad will the hate be?", it's "Can you live with knowing you're disliked?" All the second-homers in the world can't answer that for you. It's a you-dependent question.

waterrat · 10/06/2026 21:56

Yes its legal - yes its capitalism - but what sort of country do we want this to be? Entire communities being destroyed - every other house dark as others have said - not enough children in the schools, not enough workers in the hospitals.

It's shit - and if people are going to just holiday there, they could just come on holiday when they want to - its ultimately incredibly selfish - wanting a bit of a nice looking place without connecting to the reality of what community means.

We really don't have a 'right' to second homes in a small country with a housing crisis - there are many very unjust elements to housing in the UK - luxury homes being bought by foreign investment companies is one. 2nd homes is another.

Nonsense

If you want it buy it.

ChurchYardFromMyWindow · 10/06/2026 22:01

Appledore, Devon.

This graffiti sadly sums the whole thing up.

Nonsense

What's nonsensical about it? Are you suggesting OP is going to be stoned in the street? Or do you believe some random second-homer on the internet will be better able to assess her individual tolerance for being disliked by her neighbours?

miffedatsea · 10/06/2026 22:08

the house next door to us was an airbnb for a while - I used to check their reviews certain that there would be reference to the nosy neighbours as my OH loves to chat and would be out trying to make small talk when all these poor people just wanted to enjoy their stay 😆. Had one bad experience with a group of young lads, owners messaged us to apologise then decided to go for long term rental- but to be honest that was worse! Lasted 6 months. One thing I would recommend - introduce yourself to your neighbours - swap numbers, show that you are being considerate to the fact that this is their home. We respect ours, as they have always kept us in the loop

It's fine - as long as you don't interrupt someone composing a poem.

According to others here and in media it’s an urban myth. So my mum’s lying then is she?

Yes. What puzzles me when these lies are told is how on earth do the local Welsh speakers (who, apparently, oddly choose to speak English and not their first language) know, when someone walks into their place, that they are not a Welsh speaker and, consequently, immediately switch to Welsh. Which, of course, they had been speaking all along.

The only "housing crisis" we have is that people were stupid enough to believe that basic property was worth 10 times their income, if they could just borrow enough, in the future people will shake their heads when learning about the UK property mania of the 2000"s from their AI generated teacher, there is no shortage of property, everyone not taking out a mortgage still lives somewhere.

If they don't have a Welsh accent?

Or doing a Morris Dance warm up routine.

Just continue to miss the reference then in that case.

FashionVixen · 10/06/2026 22:25

A friend rents her holiday home to 3 teachers during the school year then uses it herself for the summer. Professional clean at each changeover. The tenants can store stuff in attic room over summer. They are all early 20s and travel for the summer break (makes me regret not doing teaching!). She has been doing it for a few years with the same tenants and it seems to work well for everyone. This is a neat solution, I think.

Ok or you could just be explicit.

FinallyPregnant2022 · 10/06/2026 22:30

I think you know the answer to this one. Why not support the local economy with lots of holidays/daytrips instead?

It is a well known and controversial movie from the early 1970"s.

Why? If people in Cornwall think it is a badge of honour to hate someone from the next village and never to have been to London or Manchester or wherever why should you support that kind of nonsense, are we saying the locals are somehow Godlike and own, or maybe created the land and the sea? What are the locals sitting on benefits and moaning about "incomers" doing to support other communities? A second home owner who is hardly there will be getting gouged for council tax, that is more than enough "support" for the local community.
