Why? did I hear you not ask. I went out for a rare lunch today and ordered a ploughman’s. It came with three large different cheeses and one tiny piece of bread and no crackers. Who is eating blue cheese etc with these accompaniment’s?
The same goes for whenever I order pate. Normally one massive slab with two teeny tiny triangles of toast.

I am staging a restaurant revolution. If you are out at a restaurant and see a slightly eccentric middle aged women pulling a white cob out of her handbag you now know why. If you give me a nod I will share my fellow mumsnetter.

Please feel free to share your eating out lighthearted frustrations and we can rise up to make the changes.

Seats so close to one another you feel as if you are sitting with people you do not know. Who can hear any conversation.
Why do people put up with that ?

Very much agree. See also - music blaring so loud that you have to scream at your dining companion to be heard. Awful 😔

QR code menus. A pox on them.
Give me a paper menu. Am tired of staring at my screen.

Totally agree!

While we're about it can we ban menus that display their dishes' calorie count? I don't want a side order of guilt with my dinner.

Also, just as I've put a forkful of food in my mouth, really isn't the right time for the waiter to ask “Is everything OK for you?” I'm sure they do this on purpose & we need to put a stop to it.

I see the calories as value for money. The more the better.

It's a legal requirement now isn't it? If they have a certain amount of turnover or something.

@MrsGusset , 'low calorie' is an euphemism for 'not very tasty'. I don't eat out or have takeaways very often so I want it to be a real treat.

Not restaurants but:
If buying a sandwich, and there are two similar ones one low fat and the other not, I'll have the not low fat one.

Milk - full fat for me, milk is quite low in fat anyway. The fat keeps you fuller for longer, and it will go further in tea and coffee.

Sugar-free means artificial sweetener and no added sugar means they have added something else to it.

Are £ signs and 0s rationed these days? I hate the trend of just putting numbers next to the item on the menu. Lasagne 12.5 for instance. It looks like they’re giving the food a score. Do graphic designers and printers charge for the extra numbers and ink? Just pretentious.

Apparently research shows that when people see numbers without the £ and 0’s they don’t immediately see it as a cost, so places do this to lessen the impact of ‘how much’?? Seems crazy to me, but that’s why so many places do it.

Completely agree with all this. And re your earlier comment about calories on menus:-

I see the calories as value for money. The more the better.”

Well, I hadn't thought of it like that. But your very wise words will cause me to change my attitude in future. At last I've learnt something useful & positive on Mumsnet. Thank you.

When they casually ask if you'd like some olives while having your drinks waiting for your mains and then you discover at the end that this act of generosity was priced at 7 quid fir 5

Yes this upselling practice. Took my son out for lunch to a small Italian. Food cooked in front of you, limited menu and you only got the table for 90 mins. Asked if we wanted truffle on the pasta - not mentioned but would have been £12 each supplement. I declined very fast, but son would have just said yes. Then funnily enough the recommended dessert - the most expensive one!

Cheese. FUCKING CHEESE. I HATE FUCKING CHEESE. There are cafes and restaurants I commoner go to because everything has cheese in or on it.

my favourite restaurant has just released its new summer menu and the 5 starters are 3 cheese based or 2 fish.

they have just lost one of their regular customers. It is fucking laziness and I am sick of it.

sorry but I really feel strongly about this. As you may be able to tell!!

Absolutely. Our local pub was taken over and they proudly published a new menu. Every single meal has cheese dolloped on it.

My regular rant is about cafes. I meet friends for lunch at naice cafes. Why do they all serve CRISPS with every sandwich? Crisps are not food they are salty snacks to be eaten with a drink and I don't want them on my plate. Often it's because they think people want chips and they don't serve chips.
The other thing is food served on planks or slates. I thought it might have gone out of fashion by now but no. If I know in advance I will ask for a plate but I still get caught out. It's unhygienic and I want a proper plate that's been in a dishwasher.
