FIFA WORLD CUP 2026 - DISCUSSION AND WATCHALONG THREAD ⚽️

Wasn't sure where to put this, so ive put it here for now, as its where I put the Arsenal Premier League win one.

I'm really looking forward to the World Cup, and want an England 🏴󠁧󠁢󠁥󠁮󠁧󠁿 win (although I am of course behind Scotland 🏴󠁧󠁢󠁳󠁣󠁴󠁿!)

I've got the BBC sport notifications turned on, and will likely watch with the BBC, rather than ITV.

I'll be watching my matches from home alongside my dd and cat, who are both uninterested!

Anyone fancy joining me? Will you stay up for the games of the country youre supporting?

Supporters of all countries welcome 🙂, expect football chat and banter, favourite goals/matches, fun facts about countries etc, what we're doing in celebration etc.

Happy viewing 🏆

Thank you!

Scotland played Bolivia. Cant recall if I read score line here or on bbc sport.

Bolivia that's it 🤦‍♀️ - The goals were really good

The number of sickies pulled will be hilarious 😄, especially if we get the sun as well

I think weve the makings of a good summer

Afternoon. My DH was at the 1966 WC final and we still have his programme and ticket. (Fortunately I didn't throw them away when I came across them in a drawer somewhere). He was 18 at the time and his school had bought tickets for most of the matches, particularly the England ones, he was fortunate enough to win the lottery for the final.

I, OTOH, was staying in a hotel on the Isle of Wight and the only television was in the TV lounge which filled up hours before. We listened to the match on the radio. Seems like another world now.

Now this is amazing!

Can you imagine schools buying tickets for football now 😄😄

What were the celebrations like??

You listened on the radio wow - was it 5live back then?

I have a lot of hope for us this year honestly, 60 years later 🙏

Didn't know there had been matches at the weekend, still reeling from seeing Gibraltar won a friendly. My claim to fame is that I almost jinxed the '66 final, I was working Saturdays next to a TV shop, pestering customers for the score! 5 minutes from the end my boss had had enough and sent me next door to watch the end of the match, as I walked through the door Germany equalised. I'd interviewed one of the England team a few months earler who had predicted an England and I'd laughed!
I'm known as the kiss of death, my Grandson told me never even to wish him good luckm so I will be hibernating for a few weeks. I would love to see the USA not get out of the group stages, just to experience Trump's reaction!

DoubleDoubleDown · 08/06/2026 15:03

@Gonnagetgoingreturnsagain Yep, this is my boys reward for getting up every weekend at stupid o'clock to watch premiership games. They're finally In a time zone advantage!

PickfordsWaterBottle · 08/06/2026 15:20

I am a football fan but can't muster much enthusiasm for the World Cup, so a weary place mark

NUFC69 · 08/06/2026 15:22

MumofOne (sorry, don't know how to link).

Tbh I can't remember any celebrations at all, although there were wild noises coming up through the floor from the television lounge. (Different world then: no TVs in rooms, of course, and no ensuites). I mean, everyone was delighted of course, but life was generally colourless. My mum had a crush on Martin Peters, I remember.

My DH did say that he'd just started a new part time job, delivering for the Co-op, and was supposed to be working that day, but just didn't turn up! Needless to say he was sacked.

I met him when we were both 20 and spent years going round the country following the teams he supported.

Ha ha! Fairs fair then.

GasPanic · 08/06/2026 18:34

There isn't much jeopardy at the group stage, only 16 out of the 48 teams will be knocked out, a lot of the matches are on at stupid o'clock. There are maybe 12 games in the group stage that will be worth watching.

Wake me up when the round of 32 starts.

😄 at your dh not showing up for the job! They were harsh imo, the country won the world cup!! 😄

Oh i love that - what does he think to England's chances? 👀

Very true. My liver can stay rested and relieved.

TheKittenswithMittens · Yesterday 13:41

Paddy Power have England at 13 - 2. I suppose their real chances are therefore about 1 in 10.

TheKittenswithMittens · Yesterday 13:43

Scotland are 250 - 1. On that basis, you would expect Scotland to win the world cup once every thousand years.

mumofoneAloneandwell · Yesterday 16:12

Just a reminder that the opening ceremony starts on Thursday at 6.15PM on ITV

Not sure what it will entail 👀👀

Here's a question

Anyone here old enough to have seen the 1966 England win? Or have a parent who watched it live? 👀

My Dad watched it, he wasn't a football man but "enjoyed the game and thought it great they won"

He had no idea of the significance!

I have squeezed 25ish limes, and created a lime syrup which is now in freezer for easy addage to mojitos

I just want to make a disclaimer that my husband has created an amazing sound and vision room in our (modest semi detached). A full wall projector (high definition with some fancy sound bar players are bigger than life size) and has (obviously) every football streaming service available and we are subjected to his favourite team every televised game.

What this means is all the other teenage fans of said team come here to watch games.

I am going to have teenage boys scattered on airbeds with sleeping bags all over our house during these proceedings, they are very expensive to feed, so they had better provide "atmosphere"

Revision first revision first

Livpool · Yesterday 19:00

I’ll be supporting England and France (I have French ancestry). Looking forward to it but the times of the matches aren’t great for UK.
