Traybake musings.

If I offered you a traybake, or I asked you to make one, what would you choose? Inspired by a lovely thread I clicked on in recipes and ALL answers are savoury. Which is absolutely wonderful and ground breaking for me in equal terms.

For full disclosure
I am Scottish.

if you asked me to make you a tray bake it would be something like
marsbars melted with Krispies
digestives crushed with condensed milk, cherries and rolled in coconut
crushed digestives mixed with melted coco and butter topped with peppermint icing.

I have never heard of a savoury use of the word traybake. So while gathering the lovely ideas from those thought I would see if it was just me😂

I think of traybakes as sweet and agree that the Protestant traybake thread was one of the best ever. I do know that some people throw a lot of savoury items on a baking tray for an easy meal and call it a traybake though. I think Nigella did a recipe for one with chicken pieces and sausages and served it with the bread sauce flavoured potato gratin.

What's Mint Crunch?

You might have to read the Protestant traybake thread linked earlier to find the recipe.

Traybakes are cakes (or cake-adjacent) to me too. Savoury would just be a 'bake' - so a sausage bake or a pasta bake, where the word 'tray' suddenly becomes superfluous, maybe because these things are better in a deeper dish or 'pan'. And I've never heard them called a pan-bake, because then that throws in all the saucepan possibilities.

Ah, the lexical webs we weave...

Interested in this thread?

Then you might like threads about these subjects:

Never thought I'd find myself reading a Protestant traybake thread Grin but thank you, I will.

Does flapjack count as a tray bake - we are making two kinds tonight, syrupy and fruity, seedy (to pretend its a healthy snack for school), and have some marinated chicken, some baby new potatoes and veg which will go in a tray and be baked in the oven at the same time.

I'm a two course tray baker tonight.

TabbyM · 05/06/2026 11:32

Mint slice please ;)

It’s just the word “traybake” that I find so awkward. It’s obviously cultural and where I’m from we don’t even have a similar word. Anyway, I think of savoury, so chicken and vegetables.

Yes, the flapjack counts. But it really should have icing drizzled on it too.

In our house your chicken “tray bake” would be called chicken “roast pan dinner”.

That’s my thread! I knew I should’ve put savoury in the title 😁

To me it can mean both but I definitely meant the meal kind in that thread - protein plus veg plus carb all baked in the oven in one tray.

I agree roast pan dinner is a good alternative name for the meal type.

Tiffin can’t be a traybake because it’s not baked it’s set in the fridge <gavel>

Yes....roasting tin for savoury...like the staff restaurant where dh works. Its a canteen with a fancy name.
The one with peppermint aero is excellent. I have just had an apple turnover to get into training.

An old one of my (Scottish) Grandmothers...

Digestives (smashed up) with melted better, cocoa powder, golden syrup.
Dried fruit if you fancy.
Set in the fridge, then add a layer of melted chocolate..

Food of the gods!

Traybake is definitely sweet. Scottish person too.

None of these are actual baking though, are they? They're assembly jobs. You've given me ideas though.

soupmaker · 05/06/2026 15:05

There are Scottish and Irish grannies birling in their graves at those of you suggesting that because it goes in the fridge not the oven that it’s not a traybake. Don’t be surprised if they smite you from the otherside.

Needtosoundoffandbreathe · 05/06/2026 17:44

I'm not complaining there's no baking involved!

My favourite is the Hairy Bikers Sausage Tray Bake. Mmmmmmmm

ConstanzeMozart · 06/06/2026 12:33

Sadly the Protestant traybake thread doesn't give a recipe or link for Mint Crunch Sad
