Traybake musings.

If I offered you a traybake, or I asked you to make one, what would you choose? Inspired by a lovely thread I clicked on in recipes and ALL answers are savoury. Which is absolutely wonderful and ground breaking for me in equal terms.

For full disclosure
I am Scottish.

if you asked me to make you a tray bake it would be something like
marsbars melted with Krispies
digestives crushed with condensed milk, cherries and rolled in coconut
crushed digestives mixed with melted coco and butter topped with peppermint icing.
Tiffen

I have never heard of a savoury use of the word traybake. So while gathering the lovely ideas from those thought I would see if it was just me😂

Thank you. I totally accept this is no doubt my limited life experience.

I was shocked and delighted at the savoury traybake idea.

I think we would call that a bake? Or a casserole bake?

I have never heard it as a tray bake.

and yes please to TIFFEN

My Mum calls a savoury traybake a roast bake, I’m sure she heard it referred to as a tray bake and just thought no I’m going to call it a roast bake.

A protestant tray bake?

Is there any other kind?

CagedBirdInACage · 04/06/2026 22:25

I'm Irish and when I think of traybakes I think of them up North so they would be sweet ones. I have no idea what they put in them though, I feel like one of them is called a number and they just put that number of everything in?! As you can probably tell I am Catholic and my knowledge of traybakes is therefore severely limited.

Interested in this thread?

I go to the local protestant church for the plant sale in June and the late summer garden party and cake sale in the graveyard. Im also in Cork but heading north tomorrow to inhale traybakes and potato farls.
I have heard that there are savoury traybakes but thankfully have never encountered them.

FrangipaniBlue · 04/06/2026 22:31

A tray bake is sweet, always.

i won’t hear of it any other way.

There was a great thread years ago about Protestant Tray bakes.

They sounded so tasty, I was sorry to have been brought up Catholic.

I came to say this, I loved that thread and I don't even particularly like sweet food.

Ifeeltheneedtheneedforcoffee · 04/06/2026 22:32

I would think sweet but love a pudding so could be why! 😁
Do any of you have a recommeded tiffin recipe please?

BeaTwix · 04/06/2026 22:40

Scottish. Tray bake is sweet.

I love tiffin, millionaires shortbread, flapjack, Malteser cake but my top top top favourite is Aussie crunch - basically squished up cornflakes, coconut, syrup coated with a thick layer of quality chocolate. My Mum used to make it and it was like manna from heaven when one of my crafty buddies produced it as I had no idea what the recipe was.

I also have very fond memories of my childhood next door neighbours peppermint slice.

Jane's patisserie has loads of recipes (but for flapjacks I always use soupdragons recipe from on here).

BeaTwix · 04/06/2026 22:41

@Ifeeltheneedtheneedforcoffee tiffin should be a bit of a "what you have in the cupboard affair" this does however sometimes result in disppointment!

Another suggestion from me are the Dream Bars from domestic goddess.

Walkacrossthesand · 04/06/2026 22:43

I had a savoury flapjack the other day, at a ‘coffee and home made cakes ‘ type counter - it was delicious, full of stir fried veg with the oats, and a great choice for my diabetes. Now I want the recipe!

InfoSecInTheCity · 04/06/2026 22:45

I opened this thread thinking about the sausage traybake I haven’t made for ages so I guess I associate it more with savoury 😀

Might pick up the ingredients in the shop tomorrow, it’s just sausages, diced up potatoes, sliced onion, cherry tomatoes, sliced peppers. Drizzle of oil, seasoning and some garlic. Then stick it in the oven, give it a shake periodically and let it cook till it’s the right amount of brown/crispy for your tastes. I like well browned sausages and crispy potatoes so go closer to an hour, DH likes everything a bit paler so goes closer to 40 minutes. Serve with optional gravy, I buy ready made because I’m lazy.

magikarpediem · 04/06/2026 22:56

Savoury for me on the south coast. I’ve no idea what I would call the sweet recipes, probably just by their name rather than a group!

Definitely nabbing some of these recipes. Yum

Mumtobabyhavoc · 04/06/2026 22:56

I would bake brownies or choc chip pecan banana bread, which I do in a cake pan instead of a loaf pan as it guarantees it wil bake evenly.

Joolsin · 04/06/2026 21:43

I'm of Northern Irish Protestant extraction and traybakes can only be sweet in my book!!! My go-to is a Mary Berry chocolate sponge one with a chocolate ganache and white chocolate feathered topping, it's soooo good.

I don't know what I would call a savoury one - a one-tin dinner, maybe? 🤔

😮

OP - traybakes always used to mean retangular cakes or tiffin but since CoL/fat jabs becoming the norm it now means savoury to me. My mum used to make awesome tiffin.

TheSandgroper · 04/06/2026 23:17

Love that linked thread. It’s right up there with the butter dish thread as my two favourites.

I have made this with good results https://www.seriouseats.com/smores-krispies-treats-recipe-11782816 though I have to skip the blowtorch step,

pteromum · 05/06/2026 07:25

Guess what I am up making for the school fair?

I’ve gone with mars bar crispie
TIFFEN
and a good old rocky road.

will try some of the others soon. Mint slice is my favourite but a little more of a faff.

PS 5am seems to be a good time to make these and not eat them as it’s far too sweet at that time of day!

Yes. That was a brilliant thread. I’m Scottish, traybakes are sweet. End. Of. Also baking can be judged on a scale of naught to prod, as advised by my NI pals!

LetMeJustCheckMyCitrusPocket · 05/06/2026 09:58

Also Scottish, also love a tray bake, always sweet..

Tiffin, caramel shortbread, Mars bar slice...I can't make them anymore as nobody else in the house has a sweet tooth and I would just inhale them.

Many lovely childhood memories of my mum's home baking, and all the neighbours having their own speciality where the recipes were much prized...Mrs Auld's pancakes, Mrs Turner's peppermint slice, Auntie Mary's melting moments...

Just so nostalgic.

purplepie1 · 05/06/2026 10:02

Ginger slice. If I remember it’s a biscuit base with a ginger icing.

ConstanzeMozart · 05/06/2026 10:20

50/50 between tiffin and millionaire's shortbread, depending on my mood that day.

What's Mint Crunch?

A few years ago I would have assumed if someone said to me traybake I would have assumed sweet and still with my friends if they tell me they are making a traybake I assume sweet as that has always been the case.

I am living in Cork and in my experience if someone says to me that they are making a traybake I assume it is savoury, normally chicken or fish with veg and some kind of dressing/sauce.

Really?

I’m near Cork and I voted that traybakes are always sweet!

Very confused now 😅

Samewrinklesnewname · 05/06/2026 10:26

Scottish and sweet all the way!

Millionaire shortie, or my recent development, made with a cookie base
mars bars crispie
flapjacks-with dried bananas through it and melted chocolate on top 🤤

Dorrieisalittlewitch · 05/06/2026 10:30

Both depending on context.

My (Northern Irish) MiL gave me a fabulous recipe for a sweet one involving lemon curd. Whenever we go over to visit dh's family, we come back with a boot full of taytos and traybakes. For childhood nostalgia it has to be tiffin though.

Last night we had a savoury one of sausages, peppers, tomatoes and potatoes.

LetsMakeThisMomentLast · 05/06/2026 10:34

I saw that thread. The DISAPPOINTMENT! Traybakes for me are sweet and usually involve chocolate/digestive biscuits/some form of confectionery like Mars Bars or Maltesers/marshmallows/desiccated coconut/condensed milk. Any variation of these. Occasionally all of them. I am from NI and don’t think I need to say anything else🤣🤣
