Do you allow children to walk along neighbours' low garden walls?

Do you let your kids walk on people's walls, like their low garden walls?
I don't, my kids are allowed on "public" walls and stuff, but I think it's a bit disrespectful to have them do it on private property.

I couldn’t get worked up about a child walking on my wall. They aren’t going to do any damage and it’s the property boundary so hardly the same as coming into a garden.

Not walls in general, just their garden wall maybe 🤷‍♀️

But is it really such a problem? I mean it's a wall, of bricks, not fucking gold bars. Highly unlikely a toddler is going to ruin a garden wall. People need to unclench 😂

MariaMagdalenaa · 04/06/2026 17:16

What’s the actual problem with a child walking on a wall? I have a wall and I don’t care if a child walks on it. What a strange thread.

You'd care if they fell and hurt themselves and the parents tried to sue you!

I find this type of response baffling - do you watch a lot of American tv or YouTube clips by any chance?

You don’t get sued for a small kid falling off a wall in the UK fgs, it’s just a wierd way of trying to stop people doing otherwise perfectly normal things, this threat of imaginary litigation…

MillicentReally · 04/06/2026 17:38

KvotheTheBloodless · 04/06/2026 15:21

No, cause I'm not a twat.

Are you sure?

didgeridid · 04/06/2026 17:38

I don't, no. We used to have a lot of raised borders on council land that I let them do it to though. I'm not sure if I'd mind or not. It would probably annoy me through!

In the U.K. a women tried to sue John Lewis for falling over a kid in their store
The kid was the woman's !
It happens
Even here in the U.K.

Do people who let their DC walk on walls do you let them walk through the gardens too or play on other people’s drives?

No?

rwalker · 04/06/2026 17:42

It’s entitled and rude as fuck

also doesn’t teach your kids about respecting other people’s property

IglesiasPiggl · 04/06/2026 17:44

I always let my DC do this when they were small. I suppose it was 20 years ago and we lived in a village community, but nobody got upset about it. I have never cared if a small child walks on my own wall either.

TRIED to being the operative word there

The tabloids report all these "people getting sued for ridiculous things" stories in massive splashes

They don't report that they instantly get thrown out of court for ...being ridiculous

I get all this crap 2nd hand from the Mail via my DM 🙄

Namechangenumber426 · 04/06/2026 18:15

When mine were little they'd walk on a garden wall. The older owner of said wall used to wave at them smiling and my kids would wave back. It was a lovely way to interact with neighbours.

If that makes me and and my kids a family of twats then I give no fucks.and the poster saying it's entitled and rude as fuck can go chew on a wasp.
Daft thing to get worked up about.

A lot of these walls are single brick and the coping stones on top will come loose

never let mine because as with anything if it’s not yours u keep off it

Wheech · 04/06/2026 18:36

I had no idea until Mumsnet that this might be a problem. I did let my DC do it and I wouldn't care if a child walked on mine. Not if a wall looked insecure in any way, for everyone's sake.

Im in the UK what would they sue me for medical bills? NHS is free pain and suffering? Don't let your kids walk on other people's walls then cry like a bitch about it

ithinkilikethislittlelife · 04/06/2026 18:47

Yes. Did it with all my children. My 9 year old still does it and if the wall is high I hold his hand. Love it and don’t see why there would be an issue 🤷🏻‍♀️

Nobody is questioning the act of walking along a wall. Everyone agrees it's great.

But we're asking if it is okay to walk along PRIVATE GARDEN WALLS in particular.

OP posts:
dippy567 · 04/06/2026 19:15

Yes I do and honestly wouldnt care if kids walked on ours? I remember doing it as a kid and it was fun!

IdaGlossop · 04/06/2026 19:17

W0tnow · 04/06/2026 15:17

Yes, I did when they were little. It’s just a wall?

But it's also private property?

Sunshine5791 · 04/06/2026 19:28

No, I wouldn’t let my children walk on garden walls. There are a few random walls, separating the main road from the pavement for example and they can walk on them, but not those that belong to individuals. I also don’t let them walk on peoples front gardens, it’s not my property, so they don’t get to go on it.

Even TRIED if it gets to court costs money
most of which is rarely recouped
Not to mention the stress

Well. One of life’s joys is holding your small person’s hand as they teeter along a wall, the other hand outstretched for balance, as they chat to you about something or other. Then hearing the satisfying thud of both feet on the ground when they get to the end and leap off.

It’s one of those things you remember very fondly doing with your own parents.

Of course it’s possible we are a family of twats. 🤔

Then do it on a public wall. If the bricks were loose and your child fell and was injured would you try to claim off the wall owners?

People do try to claim if the child fell because of a loose coping stone though

This. I let my dd walk on walls, and it always makes me happy to see other little ones walking along my front wall now she's older. Having an issue with it seems so joyless.

MerryGuide · 04/06/2026 20:18

Not private walls, as I wouldn't want to upset anyone plus the ones around us are all a bit wobbly looking.
Public ones are fine.

I'd be more than happy to see a child walking on my wall though
