Do you allow children to walk along neighbours' low garden walls?

Do you let your kids walk on people's walls, like their low garden walls?
I don't, my kids are allowed on "public" walls and stuff, but I think it's a bit disrespectful to have them do it on private property.

No, not a private garden.

Latenightreader · 04/06/2026 15:16

No. My daughter was desperate to when smaller but I've always refused.

I cannot fathom caring about a kid walking on my wall.

Yes, I did when they were little. It’s just a wall?

As long as your insurance covers it.

Soubriquet · 04/06/2026 15:20

I did as a kid walk on everyone’s walls, cos obviously as a child, I never thought about it.

With my own kids however, I never let them. Mine are older now, so don’t care about doing it

KvotheTheBloodless · 04/06/2026 15:21

No, cause I'm not a twat.

W0tnow · 04/06/2026 15:28

Well. One of life’s joys is holding your small person’s hand as they teeter along a wall, the other hand outstretched for balance, as they chat to you about something or other. Then hearing the satisfying thud of both feet on the ground when they get to the end and leap off.

It’s one of those things you remember very fondly doing with your own parents.

Of course it’s possible we are a family of twats. 🤔

Toddlerteaplease · 04/06/2026 15:28

Oo no. Thats rude. Ditto leaning or sitting on peoples walls.

Topseyt123 · 04/06/2026 15:30

No. I never allowed them to walk along the top of a privately owned garden wall. I think it is very cheeky.

CaseClosedWineOpened · 04/06/2026 15:30

Not for individual gardens. There is a large block of flats on the way to school that has a long low wall between the car park and the pavement and I do let them walk on that. Not sure I can really justify the distinction though.

I live next to a doctor surgery and often find a row of people sitting right outside my front door on the shared wall between the properties while they wait for appointments or for relatives. I find it weird that no one ever jumps up awkwardly in acknowledgement that it’s a bit rude to sit on someone else’s wall right outside their door 🤷‍♀️

Ugh, we walk along loads of walls.... Are you being deliberate in your misunderstanding?? 🙄

It's not the wall walking ...it's walking on people's garden walls that are we're talking about...

You'd care if they fell and hurt themselves and the parents tried to sue you!

mumofoneAloneandwell · 04/06/2026 16:00

I did it as a kid, I dont see the big deal tbh

This isnt something i've come across as a parent but I wont with my dd, as shes already autistic, I dont need people judging her further

selondon28 · 04/06/2026 16:07

Public or general area walls yes, the wall that’s obviously a private garden, no

WhatNoRaisins · 04/06/2026 16:14

I have the same public only rule. Luckily we have plenty of good public ones nearby.

Jk987 · 04/06/2026 16:15

Yes! Omg is it really a problem?

Larrythecatforpm · 04/06/2026 16:16

No i don’t let kids walk on my garden wall, last thing I want is them falling off onto my car & damaging it (it’s a driveway).

Ugh yourself. I know exactly what you’re talking about. There’s a street, my MILs actually, it’s full of those quarter acre blocks with blonde brick 60’s jobbies you find in surburban Melbourne. They all have those 3ft high brick walls at the front, culminating in the build in letter box. That what I was reminiscing about.

I wouldn't, as clearly they wouldn't get anywhere with suing me.

I have no liability as I have not invited the child on to that wall.
The only case they would have is if my wall collapsed due to not being safe, not someone choosing to come on to my property and then falling.
British courts just don't work like that.

Matildatoldsuchdreadfullies · 04/06/2026 16:17

Our wall's a wee bit high for walking on, but a comfortable height for sitting. I quite often come through my gate to nod at somebody resting on it. Can't bring myself to get her up about it.

People who toss rubbish over the wall, however....

You live in a very cynical world! 😩
