Explain your job like you're talking to a 4 year old

Tonight my 4 year old asked me what I do for work. I told him I help people fix problems with their homes.

What would you tell my 4 year old you do? And can anyone guess what I do for a living?!

I help bosses find out what’s really happening in their company. Not what they’re told is happening.

I teach pre school so easy to describe. We had a theme of parents occupations a few weeks ago and I had this tricky situation with 18 kids. Funny thing is some kids had no clue about what their parents did and never asked. I find that strange. Some said things like 'Mummy works on a computer sending messages' which is a fair description. But some literally had no idea at all.

I help to spot baddies, make sure we don't help them spend their money and sometimes report them to the police.

Ermmm

Easiest to say ; i fix computers
Could say; I help people answer questions
Could also say; gather all sorts of information and shows people what it means.

Bit that's not what I actually do.
.my job is a bit vague really.

My job was literally talking to four year olds all day. Grin

Are you something like environmental health for the local council or a surveyor to assess damage?

Hahaha!

You're very close actually - I manage a complaints team for a housing association.

Retired now, not sure it’s a topic for a 4 year old but I used to help people look after their money and help them to make things easier for their family if they got ill or died.

PawMaw · 03/06/2026 08:45

I make sure all the doctors and nurses can get all the things they need to look after their patients and I save lots and lots of money.

In our news organisation I have to check and correct the work, news stories, that our writers and journalists do to make sure there are no mistakes and that is is not biased towards one particular section of society or set of people.
Sometimes I have to completely rewrite their work both to improve it and make sure it is safe and legally correct before it is allowed to be sent out to our readers. I have the final say in whether this happens.

Sometimes when people can't agree on something, I try to explain why my person is right. If that doesn't work me and the person working on the other side both present our cases to another person, and they decide who is right.
