How do you hang your washing out?

My ndn messaged me earlier to say she had seen me peg my washing out, and she'd never seen it done like that before! Now, ignoring the fact that she's weird for watching/messaging me, is my method not normal?

So I will go along the line with the peg basket, and peg them on a foot or so apart. I'll then grab a load of washing, and chuck an item in each gap between the pegs. Finally, I'll peg them all properly. I feel this is the quickest way, and more importantly, means you only have to bend once or twice, rather than every item!

Am I the weird one?

I peg each item up as I go, usually bottoms, then tops, then undies. That’s mainly because the first bit of the line gets the most sun so jeans need more drying than knickers but it’s also a bit because I prefer it to be ordered.
Your way sounds like 3 times as much work!

Onacuctustree · 31/05/2026 22:08

My washing basket goes on an out door chair.
I kick it along as I go.
Not that old. But physical work means I keep my back as safe as I can!

My peg bag hangs on the line.. l take my washing out in a big blue ikea bag and put it on my garden bench... so l don't have to bend down.. l only hang out big stuff.. and my hand washed bras.. knickers / socks/ tea towels etc go in tumbler dryer.( l am disabled).

BarbarianBabs · 31/05/2026 22:09

I shove all the laundry into an Ikea bag which I carry over one shoulder and have the peg bag which has a longish strap over the other shoulder. So taking pegs from one side and an item of laundry from the other side and peg as I go!

Surely the pegs get dirty over time and mark the clothes!

ive never had that as an issue tbh

Load up the shoulder with as much as possible from the load. Peg as I go and the bag hung on thr line and gets shunted along each item. Return to basket once or twice to fuel the shoulder.

This is obviously the correct way

Meredusoleil · 31/05/2026 22:11

I put all the clothes on the line first. Then go back over them all with the pegs!

Meredusoleil · 31/05/2026 22:13

Oh and all undies are on octopuses and smaller clothes on the airer, so I only peg out the big stuff.

Meredusoleil · 31/05/2026 22:14

Also rest the wash basket on a bench or garden chair to help avoid repeat bending down!

Same. Plus your tip about chairs!

suki1964 · 31/05/2026 22:15

62 years of age here, and my mum would still be telling me Im hanging the washing out wrong

To me, you hang washing out to dry, that's it. Peg it with enough pegs it wont get blown off and you are done

Simple

Your neighbour needs to wind her neck in

RhubarbAndMustard · 31/05/2026 22:15

DaanSaaf · 31/05/2026 21:48

You could technically miss a step by chucking the clothes over first, then having the peg basket with you, worn like a small handbag over the wrist? Depending on the peg basket type, obviously. Mine is actually a small bucket with a lid and a handle that used to house sweets

My peg bag actually has a clip so I can attach it to my jean belt loop like a ‘super cool’ peg tool belt 😂

DaanSaaf · 31/05/2026 22:16

Maybe I like the order/repetitiveness. Peg peg peg peg, chuck chuck chuck chuck, peg peg peg peg. Or maybe my neighbour isn't the weird one...

I often leave my pegs out which eliminates a step. I also allow my washing to be darked on sometimes! Spider willies don't worry me

My husband, who is not British, hangs things under the line; hard to explain, but he is convinced that the circular gap above the clamping bit of the peg is designed to fit around the line, and the washing is clamped underneath. He thinks my way - pegging some portion of the clothes to the line - is just plain weird.

WhatWouldDianeLockhartDo · 31/05/2026 22:17

It’s weird… but I don’t hate it.

DisforDarkChocolate · 31/05/2026 22:17

I drap them over my left shoulder, the pags stay on the line, stand in one spot and rotate the airer.

Crafta · 31/05/2026 22:17

I don't mind bending even though I'm old but the easiest peg bag to use is one like a cross body handbag

Meredusoleil · 31/05/2026 22:17

I've been leaving my octopuses hanging clothesless on the line and half the pegs/clips have cracked and broken 😳

Oh that's unique and I'd worry about clothes blowing off the line. I can see his point.

That's the issue, plastic gets brittle in the sun, that's why I'll try and take them off if I can be arsed.

Metal sock peggers are better but I don't leave them outside either.

BalticTellin · 31/05/2026 22:25

Put full laundry basket on garden chair. Put peg bag on table next to it. Peg each item on line.

My peg bag is one which clips onto the line with a carabiner so if I was feeling fancy I could do that.

TwoLeftSocksWithHoles · 31/05/2026 22:25

My Granny always hung hers out on the Siegfriend Line. So she said.

adviceatthislatestage · 31/05/2026 22:25

I have a rotary line. Each quadrant has its own colour pegs.

I use my collapsible washing basket (see other thread) to bring washing out to the line. These have been pre sorted into lightest items at bottom so that first in the line (at the back) will be those that take longer to dry.

I also put all similar items and /or colours together

Lastly, I am a firm believer in pegging bottoms from the top (waistband) and tops from the bottom.

I’m a very sad individual, who gets much pleasure from seeing my ordered washing out on the line Blush

I admit to getting a bit twitchy if DH has helped me by putting stuff on the line - as it’s usually haphazard and a jumble of clothes all over the place.

I confess I’m also nerdy about how to load the dishwasher …

Ineffable23 · 31/05/2026 22:25

I have a hanging bag for the pegs and chuck the basket on whatever the nearest piece of garden furniture is so it's at waist ish height.
