How do you hang your washing out?

DaanSaaf · 31/05/2026 21:22

My ndn messaged me earlier to say she had seen me peg my washing out, and she'd never seen it done like that before! Now, ignoring the fact that she's weird for watching/messaging me, is my method not normal?

So I will go along the line with the peg basket, and peg them on a foot or so apart. I'll then grab a load of washing, and chuck an item in each gap between the pegs. Finally, I'll peg them all properly. I feel this is the quickest way, and more importantly, means you only have to bend once or twice, rather than every item!

Am I the weird one?

That sounds highly efficient.

I'm of the bend and put each item on and peg it but your way makes so much sense.

RaraRachael · 31/05/2026 21:26

Seems a lof of effort.
I work my way along the line, pegging each item up.

Can't think of an easier method than mine.

But doesn't that mean bending for each item? I can only assume you're under 40 🤔
My method doesn't take any longer but that could be the time it takes me to bend

Im 70. I bend for each item, kicking the basket along in front of me. I can’t work out why someone needs to be under 40 to be able to bend over.

Screamingabdabz · 31/05/2026 21:32

My DM is obsessed by how her neighbours peg out their washing! I couldn’t care less. My DH does ours.

NorthFacingGardener · 31/05/2026 21:35

I keep my pegs on the line, I don’t have a peg basket. So the pegs are already spaced from the previous washing. I do bend to get every item, I need the exercise 😅

Beachbeachbaby · 31/05/2026 21:36

If things like bending down to get washing or pegs feels uncomfortable that’s a sign you need to do it more not less. It’s good for your body to do bending and stretching and helps keep older bodies from seizing up

DaanSaaf · 31/05/2026 21:39

Ok, the being unable/too lazy to bend was slightly tongue in cheek! This is more about efficiency!

I love the efficiency!!! Never seen anyone do it your way though. Although I’ve never watched any one else hang their washing. I’m ridiculous with hanging the washing. I have a rotary. 4 of us. Each person has their own quadrant. Bend and peg in the right quadrant. Takes a while to hang but means I can put into piles in the basket for each person as I take it off.

LilacDrift · 31/05/2026 21:44

I leave my pegs on the line. I sometime sling a few items over my shoulder to save lots of bending. Or I put the washing basket on a garden chair.

Yes quadrant method for me too. I’m not convinced by OPs method as feels like a 3 step process, but will give it a go and am prepared to be wowed by a more efficient way!

Zov · 31/05/2026 21:47

It doesn't matter how you hang/peg out your washing @DaanSaaf this neighbour is a weirdo for gawping at you, and noticing how you hang out your washing! And then telling you she has been watching you! 😬

Who the feck sits there watching someone pegging their washing out and then comments on it?!

SHE is the odd one, not you!

LetsMakeThisMomentLast · 31/05/2026 21:48

I quite like the bending and stretching motion. Maybe I worked on a farm in a previous life. Before combine harvesters😃

You could technically miss a step by chucking the clothes over first, then having the peg basket with you, worn like a small handbag over the wrist? Depending on the peg basket type, obviously. Mine is actually a small bucket with a lid and a handle that used to house sweets

Load up the shoulder with as much as possible from the load. Peg as I go and the bag hung on thr line and gets shunted along each item. Return to basket once or twice to fuel the shoulder.

I could start a whole new thread full of weirdness from said neighbour. Watching me peg out washing is nothing

This was my previous method!

I have my own routine and way of doing it too. On a rotary line unfortunately. I am ND which might explain it but I like my pegs to match so two of the same colour on an item or a pair of socks and so on.

plus group things by what or whose they are so when dry and folded in the right order. I’m disabled and it hurts a lot to stand and hang it all so my routine is based upon making life easier (apart from the peg colour).

Sunshineclouds11 · 31/05/2026 21:52

I leave pegs on the line
I put it on garden table so a couple of steps back and forth, put some over my shoulder

I do though like to have all categories together on the line

Puffthemagicdragongoestobed · 31/05/2026 21:53

We have a small garden table, like a side table, which I move next to the washing line where I rest the laundry basket on. No bending down here!
(but I couldn’t quite follow your method - I do one item at a time, shake it out, and peg it up. Pegs already on the line)

OneNewEagle · 31/05/2026 21:54

Also ndn watching you is strange… I have very weird neighbours too.

years ago an old neighbour commented on my underwear innocently on my line to his wife 🤮 ….my underwear never got pegged out where he could see it ever again, the creep.

Puffthemagicdragongoestobed · 31/05/2026 21:54

Just realised that @Sunshineclouds11and I have identical methods!

I’m not ND (as far as I know!) but 100% with you on matching pegs!

Surely the pegs get dirty over time and mark the clothes!
