How much money did you give your kids at university?

DS reckons he’s had a lot less than his friends. I’m curious to know how much your kids at uni had to live on, after rent was paid.

DD is just coming to the end of her first year. Her loan doesn't cover her rent so we pay the remainder of that and give her £200pcm to live on. She keeps trying for jobs but they're like hens' teeth.

Schwarmallama · 29/05/2026 20:10

We pay rent and bills and give him £150 per month but we also pay his essentials so sports subs, clothes as needed. He works 1/2 shifts per week in a supermarket and then during the holidays so uses that too. He has a plan for tuition fees.

We top up to the maximum loan so works out about £500 per month.

Did they pay their rent out of that, or did you pay that separately?

DD on minimum loan which pays the rent with a top up of approx 3k from us and then we give £75/ week in term time. It’s tight for both her and us but we are getting through.
Finding part time work is not proving easy in either term time or holidays. Very different to my day.
Plus when I was at Uni my rent was less a month than hers is per week.

StrangewaysHereWeCome · 29/05/2026 20:55

DC1 gets the minimum loan, we top up to the maximum. It's working fine, but she is studying where rents are very cheap!

MrsClattenburg · 29/05/2026 21:02

DS gets minimum loan which covers 3/4 of his accommodation so we top that up. We also give him £100 a week to live on (plus a decent food shop before the start of each term)

Loubissou · 29/05/2026 21:06

Fully funded so no loans plus £500 a month. He works in the holidays.

atiaofthejulii · 29/05/2026 21:06

We paid accommodation.
The first 3 got minimum loan, then we got divorced so #4 got more but I just told xh that her extra loan was my contribution to the accommodation when he asked me to chip in. (He earns 4x what I earn and she was living with me and I wasn't asking for any vacation time contribution from her, so I don't think I was BU.)

MrsClattenburg · 29/05/2026 21:10

@BerryTwister how much does your DS receive from you?

Ndd1356387 · 29/05/2026 21:12

£150/week. (Rent paid separately). Term time only. I am finding this thread useful because I pulled that number out of thin air.

Echobelly · 29/05/2026 21:16

We're planning on paying their accommodation, but they'll have to earn 'fun money' pt. We'll sub them with I guess £70-100 a week until they get a role, amount to be confirmed.

fairmaidofutopia · 29/05/2026 21:19

I pay accommodation and DS gets minimum maintainence grant. He lives on that and earnings during holidays

LasVegass · 29/05/2026 21:22

£140 pw and top up the rent. We pay travel costs, balls, contact lenses and a surprising amount of Ubers. Next one is starting in September, we still have a few tough years ahead.

Halthern · 29/05/2026 21:22

DD got the max loan as I'm on a low income and I wasn't able to give any money to her. She got a bursary of £5k a year on top of the loans, and worked during holidays.

Fraughtmum · 29/05/2026 21:22

They got £1000 a term from me. They both worked but were in central London which was expensive. No idea what their dad gave them.

Iliketulips · 29/05/2026 21:22

We gave DD £400 for every month she was away from home, except for her year abroad (rent was a lot less, and she had a grant). Her rent in Scotland was high due to location and train or plane/train back home was £200 each time.

NameChangeScot · 29/05/2026 21:31

I studied 2006-2010 and my (single) mum gave me £150 a month, plugging that into an inflation calculator is would be around £300 in today's money.

I worked full time every holiday and took some very ad-hoc work during term time.

I got £7k loan and bursary per year, which was is about £14k in today's money.
Accomodation was about £5.5k a year (expensive city), or £11k in today's money.

On that basis I had just about £1k a month spending money or £250 a week + any additional income from working. Looking back on those figures I was a lot better off than I felt at the time, I felt very much like a skint student.

rougheredges · 29/05/2026 21:40

We pay her rent and phone and car insurance. She gets £150 a week from us but no loan so it covers food, clothes, going out, transport, petrol, contact lenses etc.
She has a few jobs (security at a stadium, house clearances, occasional bar work and waitressing through an agency) during term time and works during holidays.

Comefromaway · 29/05/2026 21:41

I give Dd nothing as she gets a full loan plus £500 per year bursary.

I topped ds up from min to max loan which gave him approx £70 per week to live on after rent.

both of them work to supplement this.

Thingcanonlygetbetter · 29/05/2026 21:53

We paid over 9k for the halls. Set them DD up with annual bus pass and then we probably give on average £200 a month. Grandparents probably give a £100 a month. She has got through first year with no loan and starting work next week to build up funds for 2nd year we are hoping she can get through with no maintenance loans. I keep telling her this is all ok for now with both of us working. But you never know what changes happen in our circumstances that we might not be able to do this. I honestly would give what you can afford. But I am such a low maintenance person I would rather she had it than me. I tell her I get joy from hearing of all her fun.

Seagroves · 29/05/2026 21:54

My DD is starting in Sept. We’ll top up rent and give about £300 a month - but we’ll review it and she’s knows she can ask if she gets stuck.

She’s very sensible and has already worked out her food budget for the week!

TiredAndGrumpy51 · 29/05/2026 21:55

I paid rent and bills. They used minimum loan for everything else but I think grandparents subbed them an extra £100 / month.

JulietteHasAGun · 29/05/2026 21:57

Pay her rent. She has her student loan and an extra £30 a week which I think works out about £125 a week.

Helpyourkids · 29/05/2026 21:57

We paid rent upfront and gave £100 per week to live on on condition no loan taken out alongside.

FlipthelidSid · 29/05/2026 21:58

BerryTwister · 29/05/2026 20:19

Did they pay their rent out of that, or did you pay that separately?

They pay their rent out of that.
