How much money did you give your kids at university?

DS reckons he’s had a lot less than his friends. I’m curious to know how much your kids at uni had to live on, after rent was paid.

I topped dd1 up to the maximum loan, dd2 was sponsored and had a substantial bursary (because I’d split from their dad and choice of degree) so nothing

BashfulClam · 29/05/2026 18:36

Tell him to get a part time job. I had two and zero from my parents and got no funding as my parents were expected to help support me but didn’t.

ramonaquimby · 29/05/2026 18:38

We pay accommodation costs and they manage student loan. They haven't worked through term time (work placements) so we also subbed £200 per month
All really depends on what you can afford

FlipthelidSid · 29/05/2026 18:39

We top up to the maximum loan so works out about £500 per month.

AGlessandahalf · 29/05/2026 18:40

We pay accommodation costs as he only gets minimum on maintenance loan. He has a part time job too so gets nothing else from us.

I have got a second job to pay for this

Stoicandhappy · 29/05/2026 18:40

I paid accommodation costs and DC had to use loan and earnings from jobs for everything else

Ponderingwindow · 29/05/2026 18:44

Dd goes next year and is applying to a program that requires significant volunteer hours. She has already started on them now, but her ability to earn is low because of the time commitment. We are going to do our best for her to not graduate with any debt. So our contribution will be large.

we have been saving since birth and the grandparents are contributing.

warmsmell · 29/05/2026 18:44

We gave ours £700 a month each as we didn't want them working and we wanted them to enjoy the experience and focus on their studies.

Springbuck · 29/05/2026 18:49

Nothing, he has a job and maximum loan. We did give him £800 recently to get his car fixed and we occasionally do a big shop but that’s it.

Grumpyeeyore · 29/05/2026 18:51

£120 week after rent (some of that was bursary / loan so I didn’t pay all of it). DS1 ran with a wealthy crowd at an expensive town and spent it all. DS2 had a more mixed friend group and lived in a cheaper city and had quite a bit left over.

FlowerSticker · 29/05/2026 18:54

£1000 pm

Meadowfinch · 29/05/2026 18:58

Ds will go in autumn. I'll pay his accommodation, and he'll have about £300 a month for food, books, clothes and travel.

He cycles rather than drives so no car costs, and he doesn't drink so his bills should be fairly low. We'll see how he gets on. Hopefully he'll continue working as a lifeguard too.

DeftGoldHedgehog · 29/05/2026 19:01

We top up (just about) the difference between the minimum loan she receives and the maximum loan (out of which comes her rent, which is more than the minimum loan she receives), then she earns about £150 a week in term time then probably more like £400 a week at home in the summer, but we don't give her money from June - August as she's at home with us.

littlesue · 29/05/2026 19:04

I pay rent and DS lives off the minimum student loan which is about £120 a week.

TeenLifeMum · 29/05/2026 19:04

We’re expecting to pay £850 per month - top up loan to cover accommodation which is £220 per week and then it’s £100 per week (including 3 hot meals on the uni meal plan per week). But we’d like to bring that down after Christmas to £650 with dd working. She’s also saving a lot working right now.

she’s been offered a scholarship worth £6k towards living costs a year but has to achieve very high grades for that offer to be in place so currently planning for her not having that and if she does it’ll change things somewhat.

Conversationalcheddar · 29/05/2026 19:05

My parents sent me £200 a month. I also had a job.

DemonsandMosquitoes · 29/05/2026 19:05

We paid accomodation and lent them the equivalent of the minimum maintenance loan interest free (GP paid tuition), they paid this back when started work. They also had part time jobs as students for extras.

TeenLifeMum · 29/05/2026 19:06

Conversationalcheddar · 29/05/2026 19:05

My parents sent me £200 a month. I also had a job.

Assuming that wasn’t in the last 4 years where rent has skyrocketed and the minimum maintenance doesn’t come close to covering it in most unis.

SouthwarkLass · 29/05/2026 19:17

We paid rent (which was very reasonable, worked out about 6 K per year- Oxford). Then £250 per month which he managed fine on. He topped it up with summer and Christmas jobs. He started in 2020 and graduated 2024

SpringingOn · 29/05/2026 19:22

We paid rent and they lived on minimum maintenance loan and some holiday jobs.

redskyAtNigh · 29/05/2026 19:25

Another who pays rent and DD lives off the minimum maintenance loan.
She also has a summer job (would like a term time job, but has been unable to find one) which pays for a holiday and some luxuries.

redskyAtNigh · 29/05/2026 19:27

FlowerSticker · 29/05/2026 18:54

£1000 pm

After rent? Shock Assume your young person must be in London, but still ...

Anjelika · 29/05/2026 19:48

I worked out how much I needed to pay to top DS’s loan up to the max then divided that by 10 months which meant £300 a month. I have given him another £1k more over the year for things like sports club membership, deposit for Y2 house (which isn’t refundable). He got a bursary too so that’s helped him financially.

Mammut · 29/05/2026 19:56

We pay rent, phone, glasses etc, and he lives off the minimum maintenance loan. One more year to go!

HeddaGarbled · 29/05/2026 20:00

Yes, as with PPs, we paid their rent for all 3 years. Nothing else during term time.
