Should we go home a day early?

Boring question but I cant decide.

Booked in a cottage until Saturday but I'm fed up.

Had lovely weather but it's set to rain tomorrow and other than the beach there isn't much to do.

It's somewhere we come to at least once a year (have had our main holiday here some years) so we know the area really well. Nothing we haven't done so to speak.

I'm on my own with 3 DC as DP had to go back for work on Tuesday. They are generally well behaved but DC1 cut their foot so the beach isn't ideal for them (and today they spent most of the day on the promenade in a deck chair reading)

It's been incredibly busy all week and there has sadly been a lot of anti social behaviour. Hoards of teenagers have descended on the town and it's been quite intimidating - I say that as a life long Londoner. Seems to be a mix of half term, good weather and the local station having no ticket barriers that has made this beautiful little spot a meet up place that has gone viral.

We're okay as we go to a smaller, off the beaten track beach but we're all a bit sick of the beach and as I say its meant to rain tomorrow.

Despite all that I still can't make a decision. Part of me thinks we're here and we should just "make the most". We live in central London so should savour every moment in nature etc. But I kind of want to go home. The older kids want to go home - although their motives are clearly different as they want to get back to "see" thier mates ie: jump online.

I have an open ticket but if we leave it will be early tomorrow. I don't want to get caught up in all the weekend comings and goings that have seen the small station closed due to overcrowding all week.

TL;DR our last day of a mediocre break is going to be wet, should be just sack it off and go home?

Edited to add, not sure how I managed to get a typo in the poll?

Could you book a nice spa day, OP? x

She's on her own with 3 kids, so a spa day is not going to happen!

LlynTegid · 28/05/2026 20:59

I think the cut foot and limitations would tip the balance for me.

Sad to read that the worst examples of people from these shores on holiday have not helped.

whereisit1 · 28/05/2026 21:02

Where are you OP? Sorry it's been a rubbish holiday. I would cut your losses and go home

Kent coast.

And yes I'm strongly leaning towards going home now.

Turns out the tickets aren't open but its just £20 to get us on the 10am train tomorrow so I've booked it.

If it is suddenly wall to wall sunshine tomorrow then we still have our original tickets.

Go home. We’ve been on this decision edge twice: once we went home (and we’re v pleased with ourselves) and once we didn’t. Kids (now young adults) were just talking about the holiday we didn’t cut short (by more than a day) and couldn’t fathom why we chose not to and wished we had.

RollOnSunshine · 28/05/2026 21:23

Go home - that's what you want.

Newyearawaits · 28/05/2026 21:32

FruityFrog · 28/05/2026 20:30

No, stay. Go for a walk somewhere or go to a nearby town for lunch. There's more to holidays than beach and you won't melt in the rain.

This and you will be at home for days, weeks, months etc
Make the most of your remaining day.

Calamitysue · 28/05/2026 21:33

Go home and enjoy your weekend

ReadingSoManyThreads · 28/05/2026 21:37

Why do people put TLDRs at the bottom of the post instead of at the top?!

I think you should stay though.

We've only left a holiday early once. It felt really good, like we were claiming something back. Have a takeaway when you get back, put a film on, just do the last night of your holiday in your own beds if that makes any sense.

Love this. totally agree.

we did something similar a few years ago, crap weather and dd came down with a very a serious ear infection, we took her to local hospital and got her antibiotics then drove home. Spent the rest of the day just having a lovely time

we also did a midnight flit from butlins last year

Xmasbaby11 · 28/05/2026 21:41

I’d go home - it’s only one day and it sounds like you’ve had the best of the holiday now and are ready to leave. We’ve done it a couple of times in similar situations. As pp say, get a takeaway on return to soften the blow for the one who’d rather stay.

Bristolandlazy · 28/05/2026 21:41

Go home, when you're home and it's the time you should of been leaving you'll feel chuffed it's done. You get a weekend at home to relax before school. If it weren't for the weather and crazy teenagers I would say stay. You've given it a good shot, I'd be on that train in the morning and promise the youngest a treat when you get home.

Yep realised I did the TL;DR at the bottom (as well as a stupid typo in the poll)

Almost fully decided we are heading home tomorrow though. Rain or no rain I think we're done.

Agree with this.

theresnolimits · 28/05/2026 22:16

We were in Cornwall a few years ago - the weather was forecast to be awful so we just got up and drove home. We calculated that we would be spending £40 on lunch, £100 on another dinner and for what - to sit in the hotel all day? Every extra day brings extra costs so it has to be worth it. The accommodation is sunk costs.

Go home. Let the kids enjoy their own things. And realise that you’ve done that location. It has served its purpose and times change.

Zoopet · 28/05/2026 22:21

Very sensible.
So sorry that your holiday has been marred by idiotic morons ruining the family vibe.
I lived and worked in Broadstairs and loved it.
Hopefully Kent police can sort out the anti-social behaviour asap!

Chewbecca · 28/05/2026 22:26

I don't think YABU if you wanna go but it (probably) isn't going to rain on the Kent coast tomorrow!

Happyjoe · 28/05/2026 22:32

Put it to a vote with you guys! But sounds like an extra day at home chilling may be lovely - nothing beats your own bed.

Wish I'd never checked the forecast and I'd be none the wiser.

Now it's in my head it's pretty much a done deal though. I don't think I have it in me to lug all the beach gear there and back to sit on a beach when it's not even sunny 😕

I want to see my fluffy boys (2 cats) and sleep in a bed that isn't sandy.

This time in 12 hours we'll be on our way home.

Why go to the same place every year? It's obvious that will get dull real quick. I think you need to avoid going there for a few years. Give it a break for say 3-5 years. Then you might enjoy it again.

THEDEACON · 28/05/2026 22:38

Do what you want

SidewaysRain · 28/05/2026 22:41

It’s such a pity what’s happening in Broadstairs. The powers that be seem to have somewhat resigned themselves to the state of affairs.

This may not be your thing, but what about showing the older two that there is a way to act here that’s positive? Some locals have been cleaning up the beaches after the teens have gone, could you help? The high street will need your custom, some quick purchases on your way to the station? Even a conversation about what’s happening and why. If you’ve enjoyed the town so much, it can feel more useful to do something?

In all likelihood it probably won’t rain that much. But I do also get the drive to just cut and run:

Great you’ve got both options. Hope it works out ok in the end.

Sorry but who wants to spend their holidays cleaning up someone else’s mess?!

Go home OP.

Youhadrambledonfor18pages · 28/05/2026 22:54

You say there’s not much to do apart from the beach and also that you visit a lot. So what do you normally do when it’s not beach weather (which is usually at least 50% of the time in the UK)?

I don’t understand why you’d keep going back for a holiday to somewhere where you’ve “done everything”.

TotalBaloney · 28/05/2026 22:56

Why do you keep going on holiday to the same place?
