Ideas for stuff to do in and around Lyme Regis

I'm going to Lyme Regis in about a month's time - a friend has booked a cottage and I'm going to stay with her for the first week. Has anyone got ideas on what is good to do around there? We aren't beach worshippers (but like a walk on the beach when it's quiet) but we do like exploring - but we are not serious walkers! We walked the SW coastal path last summer and it knackered us! No kids with us, just two 30-something friends wanting a relaxing time and chilling out. It will be out of school holidays.

One of the days I'm meeting a friend from university and we're going to Killerton House near Exeter but that's all we've got planned.

Any ideas welcome, good places to eat, something a bit different maybe. Thanks.

You will like Killerton House, we visited a few weeks back and it had an exhibition on as well (clothes - Victorian, 40s 50s 60s etc). The grounds are beautiful, you can do some serious walking there. Our 20 something son came with us and he loved it too.

What sort of area, miles wise are you happy to travel to, or do you just want to stay around Lyme Regis?

Little tram from Colyton to seaton
donkey sanctuary
boat trip exmouth
food on the floating restaurant exmouth

That's what I'm going to Killerton for! I'm getting the train and my friend won't have a car either, so we are reliant on the bus or train. Which will be good. I love the train, and reading and listening to music instead of getting stressed out driving. I'm going from Hull so I don't want to be driving from there!!!

I'm liking these ideas. Donkey sanctuary sounds great.

Apparently the beach is a good one for fossil hunting 🐚

Lovely restaurant there too

Definitely the Donkey Sanctuary, it’s heavenly. And there’s a great walk from there to Weston beach, steep walk back though!
Fossil walk on Charmouth beach, or just a mooch round the fossil shop there.
Lyme Regis itself is lovely, plenty to see and do there, not nice at the weekend in high season though, so you’ve chosen well to go out of school hol time.
And my absolute favourite thing to do in that area (a bit further past Sidmouth) is the walk from Otterton Mill to Budleigh Salterton (by the river Otter) and then back to the mill for cheese scones and coffee.
You’ve made me think I must go back 🤣.

Edited to add all of these places can be got to by bus, you’ll have to get a bus to Sidmouth and then another one to Otterton if you go to the mill, but Sidmouth is really nice too.

Do they really constitute a day out though? We just walked up them with the dog 😂 There’s a nice farm shop and cafe at Symondsbury though.

Glitchymn1 · 28/05/2026 17:04

You aren’t far from Bridport- West Bay area, lovely beach, nice little town, shops, market, restaurants. Can get busy though!

eurochick · 28/05/2026 17:13

Fossil hunting. At Charmouth you can get guides to help you know what to look for.

Sgtmajormummy · 28/05/2026 17:23

Bridport antiques market is huge and you (I) can spend all day browsing. Just check the opening times. Nice food trucks, too.

Crummles1 · 28/05/2026 17:47

Beer, just over the border in Devon - boat trip, self-hire or join an organised one, also mackerel fishing

Seatown - NOT Seaton

And YY to the donkey sanctuary!

Wishfulthinking1977 · 28/05/2026 19:00

You can book fossil walks in the museum, cocktails 2 for one offers and a lovely view at the Lyme bay kitchen at the bottom of town, fox and owl do lovely cocktails too and delicious chicken wings! Al la carte dining at Sandro's on drakes way, Cobb arms for a nice meal, Sunday roast at the volunteer, nags head have live music at the weekend. Seaton Jurassic centre is good as is the donkey sanctuary. Buses can be intermittent and the road into Bridport can be slow. The aquarium on the Cobb or a boat trip if you enjoy those sorts of things?! Enjoy your stay! Xx

The market events are the last Sunday of the month, 10am to 3pm.

mumumental · 28/05/2026 23:31

Walk from town to the outskirts along the stream.

Not sure if you were correcting a previous poster about the tram, but they were correct that it runs between Colyton and Seaton (not Colyton and Seatown).

Tabarnak · 29/05/2026 00:20

Beer is lovely to visit, and walk up to Beer Head and onwards for fabulous views.

Seatown is nice , the walk up to Golden Cap is worth it and you can have a drink overlooking the beach when you get back down!

Well, the OP wasn’t asking for days out, just things to do.

HelenaWilson · 29/05/2026 00:57

The thing to do at Lyme Regis is jump off the Cobb and catch a dashing Naval officer, isn't it? Or alternatively impress a dashing Naval officer by keeping your head in the crisis when all about you are losing theirs.

We've just walked the Holloways and climbed Colmers Hill. We had no idea about the Symondsbury Estate and it is beautiful. Very nice cafe as well. We've been passing Colmers Hill for years Hmm

Poppy61 · 29/05/2026 07:59

The Anchor Inn at Seatown is fab

Poppy61 · 29/05/2026 08:03

Oh and another idea. Beaminster, further inland, is a great place to wander around and Camillas homeshop has gorgeous courtyard cafe. Apologies if you have no transport, haven't read fully. Getting ready for work.

MontyDonsBlueSuit · 29/05/2026 08:04

I’m not usually a museum person but the little one at Lyme is lovely - I’d just read Remarkable Creatures about Mary Anning the fossil hunter so to see some of her finds was really cool. I think the museum was possibly her house once 🤔
