Abusive neighbour

I have a neighbour that is refusing to give my children’s footballs back, she said she is going to put them in the bin as they have landed in her garden. She’s also sent me aggressive messages, insulting my children and sworn at me, I have remained civil throughout the exchanges but I’m starting to feel intimidated in my own home and worried what she’s capable of next.

We had the same, in fact there was a post on this very topic last month: https://www.mumsnet.com/talk/am_i_being_unreasonable/5523617-aibu-not-to-outright-ban-kids-from-playing-with-balls-in-garden-after-neighbours-complained?flipped=1&page=11

And our cats were hit, glasses and crockery were broken, so were ceramic plant pots - it became impossible to use our garden in the summer while the 'Ball Family' were living next door to us. Utter disregard for our comfort in our own garden.

This is making my blood boil. wtf is the matter with people raising feral kids. Most of this isn’t accidental; it’s sheer entitlement and so what to anyone who doesn’t like it. Go and complain? Chance of a kicking 9/10

ThejoyofNC · 27/05/2026 20:23

Most oeople don't behave like this by default. She's probably had enough.

People don’t give a shit if their kid is whacking a ball all over the place. It’s their right. As long as they don’t have them under their feet. Sorry, I’ve had years of it. I’d like to stab the balls with a knife.

Much better they are in they house glued to ipads.

One time, one of the cats was hit so hard that his eye swelled up and the lid puffed over - he literally looked like he had one eye. I was putting him in the car and my mum took the ball next door and told them what had happened. The parents were just like "Oh dear." No accountability. We came back from the vet and three more footballs were in our garden. That is disrespectful fuckery at its finest isn't it? Luckily he kept his eyeball and didn't lose his sight. ÂŁ300 later...

OMG! I've had a horrible family move in next door to me that are constantly kicking balls into my garden! They are playing cricket and using the fence I am responsible for replacing as a ball stop! The vile children came round at 9pm last night asking for their 5th ball back! It woke my up my toddler! I cannot walk into my garden without the children standing over my fence shouting at me to throw balls back! I've binned them as well! Cricket balls should not be coming into my garden!

Cleo65 · 27/05/2026 20:54

I'm with the neighbour - it's her garden, if you want to keep your balls.....then don't let them flop into someone else's property.
I suspect you know that though?

Jeez. They’ll have someone’s eye out like the poor cat nearly had.

I think your neighbour posted her side of the story the other day…

Friendlygingercat · 27/05/2026 21:09

The grandchildren of the couple next door used to play football and balls would come over. I never attempted to throw them back. My nephew (who comes once a week) threw them out into the street where they were available for any neighbourhood child to pick up. Of course we had no idea where they had come from.but we could not be accused to keeping them. I do admit to having put the odd one in the bin.

There have not been any balls for a long time. Either the kids grew out of playing or the adults grew tired of buying balls.

Magpiegrave · 27/05/2026 21:13

How many balls are going into her garden?

More than once a month or so and you need to put up netting or something.

We do not have/want children but we try to be nice neighbours. However at one point we had a shed window smashed, multiple balls knocking into our plants and herbs, our cat got a football land on him, and this was on top of hearing the fence get hit by a ball 50 times a day.

Its great for kids to play outside but they need to be taught for to behave and be considerate. I stopped throwing the balls back after a while and yeeted them elsewhere. I got absolutely sick of it.

dollydog5 · 27/05/2026 14:33

My ds quite often does this. It’s always by accident. The neighbours throw it back. It’s a non issue. Are we really saying that children shouldn’t be allowed to play football in their own gardens?

The issue is it’s not in their own garden! If they aren’t good enough to keep it in your garden you shouldn’t let them play football there until they have more skill.

Shocking. All people like that do is cost us money.

Honestly it was the way they just said: "Oh dear" as we were getting ready to go to the out of hours vet because we thought he might lose his sight.

"Oh dear."

Really?! Not "sorry." Not "can we do anything?"

"Oh dear."

Cat in pain and scared. Being really brave but essentially was attacked in his own garden when all he was doing was having a sun bathe.

"Oh dear."

Oh well pick and choose your laws, sounds like a good idea. I had a neighbour who burst the kids ball and was very unpleasant. A word from the PCSO enlightened them.

❤️ Police might not do anything but small claims court will.

This is my neighbour. Happy to smash holes in my fence but won’t give the neighbourhood kids their balls back. Not ours so far as they are too young.

Like I said. Nets.

and when I replace the fence she ruined, her side will be Gallagher orange.

JustABean · 28/05/2026 19:57

I also recently stopped returning balls, after several times a day for the last 2 months or knocks at the door can we get balls back I had enough...I don't allow my children to do this...if it was once or twice but consistently became to much
