Oh man, what food should we do? It’s all really good mates coming, but my brain is just fried. Sat here trying to make a list and I keep going blank. So far I’ve just written “shit ton of pizza and icecream.”

Dh is an excellent cook and would always want to cook a massive curry/chilli but I doubt anyone will want to eat that. It goes down well in winter.

There will be 8 adults

3 children age 4-5

4 children age 10 - 12

No vegetarians or food allergies, no one particularly fussy.

Big double oven, but will not use the bbq with that many children running around as the garden is quite small.

Roast chicken drumsticks, can be served cold, baguettes, cheeses, salad of some sort (potato salad and a Greek one maybe) and the pizzas as you suggest

murasaki · 27/05/2026 12:31

Hotdogs and buns for the kids?

madaboutpurple · 27/05/2026 12:32

I agree pizzas could be the best and a few bowls of salad, children like crisps usually.

They eat curry or chill in hot countries, I don't understand why this would be a problem?

Woodywasatwatt · 27/05/2026 12:35

You’d think I’d never done this before wouldn’t you? I don’t know what’s wrong with me this time, can’t seem to get a simple list together!

Yes, I know, I’m Indian.

When it’s colder, dh cooking gets hoovered up. when we’ve had people over in the summer, they don’t tend to want to eat it and want to pick at things instead.

Hotdogs are an excellent idea, I might get a load of chipolatas to put in the oven.

Pizzas.

Was thinking of some sausage rolls, veg and hummus.

Sounds good, it'll still be warm tomorrow, people won't necessarily want that much.

murasaki · 27/05/2026 12:42

Amd the good thing is there'll be leftovers to pick over the next day. I'm a fan of next day cold pizza....

I catered for 18 people on bank holiday Monday when it was roasting and the food went down really well with not a lot leftover. I made:

Cold pesto pasta and sweetcorn salad (this was popular with the kids too)

Potato salad

Greek salad

Quiche

Cheeseboard with crackers and grapes

Salamis and other deli meats

Baguette and butter

Southern fried chicken in the air fryer so that was the only thing that needed cooking at the party. Everything else was already made and in the fridge.

Dessert was build your own Eton mess.....berries, meringue nests and whipped cream and a tonne of cornettos in the freezer.

Drinks we filled the coolboxes with ice and had one for soft drinks (cans of fizzy, bottles of water and cartons of juice) and one for alcohol (cans of beer, bottles of prosecco.) I also made a big jug of Pimms.

Keep a couple of bowls of crisps out from when people start arriving and everyone should be happy.

That all sounds lovely!

I forgot about quiches, they do always go down well.

Oh man, not a chance of left overs with my 12 year old and her friends 🤣 the older ones are all staying for a sleepover, so I am sure any leftovers will be polished off for a midnight snack.

I can never be accused of under catering though, I’m a feeder 🤣

@Woodywasatwatt

The OP of that thread was very good natured about some of the nastier comments, and she even posted a photo of the leftovers.
