It maybe worth highlighting again the existential differences between being British, and being European that are a product of geography.

The British Isles simply have no border with any hostile nation. It permeates our entire sense of self. And makes it difficult to appreciate he anxieties in countries and nations that do.

Have edited the post you responded to @SerendipityJane . Please don't use the term British Isles to include Ireland which is part of the EU. In Geo Political terms it's best to say the islands of the North Atlantic, hence demonstrating a valid value to the Republic of Ireland and it's severed past colonial links with the British Empire.
