I had the same thought.

And me

Are we being cynical? Maybe he is resigning on principle. We will soon find out.

Will anyone else go?

DuncinToffee · Yesterday 12:42

I wonder where Healy thinks the money should come from. Is he thinking welfare cuts by any chance?

It’ll be interesting to see who takes over. I can’t see any of the obvious candidates wanting it for exactly the reasons Healey’s resigned.

Notonthestairs · Yesterday 12:53

I was about to write that it's always defence ministers that resign, probably because of money/priorities.

But then I realised the churn over the last decade plus (Fox, Hammond, Fallon, Williamson, Mordaunt, Wallace, Schapps) was for a variety of reasons (conflict of interests, promotion, sex scandal, leaked info, change of leader, NATO leadership hopeful, GE).

I'm sure its a difficult role to fulfil without the budget that they'd like to have. But I suppose the same could be said about multiple departments.

I wonder if that is so he can throw his hat into the ring in the event of a leadership challenge

My thoughts too. There was a piece in The Telegraph yesterday .

John Healey should resign

BIossomtoes · Yesterday 13:03

According to Jenrick and Cleverly Healey was the second coming. I bet they weren’t saying that yesterday.

Good grief that article - anyone would think the Tory party threw all the money at defence (they didnt).

Notonthestairs · Yesterday 13:12

With John Healey resigning as defence secretary over the PM's military spending plans, 56% of Britons say that military funding should increase

However, when pressed on what they would be willing to support in order to increase defence spending, the public are opposed to most measures we asked about. Raising tax on the richest and cutting welfare spending are the most popular options

so where is the money coming from?

What are Britons willing to do to increase defence spending?

While most Britons want more money for the military, the only approach a majority of the public support from our list is taxing the rich

SerendipityJane · Yesterday 13:28

Quite happy to spend money on defence.

Much less happy to see it shovelled to mates and pissed away on supplier-led initiatives rather then demand-led needs.

DuncinToffee · Yesterday 13:43

It is not looking good for Starmer though. I think this is serious.

I think people are scared of making the same mistakes the US Dems did. Which isn't the same because Keir Starmer isn't old and obviously in ill health. But I can imagine failing to replace a deeply unpopular leader in time for an election with a hard right.pppulist could seem like a bad move.

Agree. The fact that Healy didn't wait a week until the by-election is over is possibly significant?

BIossomtoes · Yesterday 13:59

I don’t think he could have waited a week. He was under pressure to get the Defence Investment Plan out before next Thursday.

TemperanceWest · Yesterday 14:08

Al Carns now putting the boot in.Is he going to be next? Is this going to be like the mass resignations under Johnson?
