DfE pupil data is out today and shows that the number of private school pupils has dropped 5.6% since VAT was introduced.

Not 25% like the independent schools council predicted. Or the 50% we saw in some right-wing papers.

5.6%.

Note that state school numbers are down 1.9% due to falling birth rates over the same time period so the fall in private school numbers attributable to VAT is at most 3.7%.

I’m baffled. I don’t know what you’re implying

OK. Best not to discuss further as would be TAAT territory.

So there was no mass exodus to state schools.

The sad face parents struggling on £200,000 per year because of higher private school fees was a myth.

Etcetera.

Efacsen · 04/06/2026 10:57

Thanks @DuncinToffee - it's certainly true here with 2 state primaries ear-marked for closure due to falling rolls

Struggling with site being so slow this morning

TemperanceWest · 04/06/2026 11:02

So some of the private schools which have closed would have regardless of the VAT change?

Notonthestairs · 04/06/2026 11:06

Reform have picked up £7 million donations from 2 crapto billionaires since January.

Why would they do that?

Because Farage has published a paper committing to a) cut stamp duty on crapto transactions from 24% to 10% and b) deregulate the sector.

This might also explain why he personally pocketed £5 million pounds.

And of course Farage has a personal stake in crapto.

A clear conflict of interest.

TemperanceWest · 04/06/2026 11:12

Do we know when the Parliamentary Commissioner for Standards will report back?

Two men, Matt Styler, 50 and Daniel Frost, 44, have been charged in connection with the disorder that broke out in Southampton. Frost has been charged with violent disorder and possession of an offensive weapon.

Someone should send this to mnhq:

The director of the Independent Office for Police Conduct, Derrick Campbell, said: “We are acutely aware of the public interest in this case. We would respectfully ask people to stop speculating on an ongoing live investigation.

“This investigation is going to fully establish the circumstances of the case including whether there may be misconduct on the part of any of the officers involved.

“The ongoing commentary about the evidence and speculation risks prejudicing any potential processes and preventing Henry Nowak’s family getting the answers they deserve.”

BIossomtoes · 04/06/2026 11:47

There are so many possible reasons for that £5 million donation I feel spoilt for choice.

DuncinToffee · 04/06/2026 11:59

Labour MP Jess Asato is suing X over fake images of her made with Musk’s AI Grok.

Starmer is backing her and also hits out at Musk and X for whipping up division

Time for the government to stop using that platform.

Good and agree.

Off topic: I noticed MNHQ posted a link to mental health support resources on one of the Henry Nowak threads. I have never seen them do that before (as in aimed at all the thread participants rather than a particular poster in need). They must be a bit concerned.

No idea - do they work through recess? Summer recess must be approaching.

PickAChew · 04/06/2026 12:10

I'm quite alarmed by how many people voted that the OP was being unreasonable.

I see it as a (part) payment, not a donation.
An advance on services to be rendered.

We all need to remember that Mumsnet isn't real life. This place is full of unfashionable people.

In other news, DD has passed her driving test - first time, only three minors. I am so, so proud.

Congratulations to your DD on passing her test first time, I failed the first time! That’s such a milestone.

I agree with you about MN and polls.

The unfashionable have certainly descended upon MN.

Congratulations to your DD!

DuncinToffee · 04/06/2026 15:30

Well done @pointythings DD!

I also agree re the polls.

The unfashionables will soon retreat to their usual names or just disappear.

Congratulations to your DD @pointythings. I’m so impressed, it took me seven goes when the test was much less stringent.

I really hope it calms down out there soon. Do we think we’ve got to deal with this shit for the next two weeks?

Got our fascist funday next weekend (13th) - hope it has died down by then. It’s certainly organised higher up than our local group, who can’t find their arse with both hands and a map - nor can they spell our home city correctly. So there’s already some lovely folk being shipped in, so I’ve heard, hoping they don’t increase it in light of this rubbish.
